The canonical eukaryotic cell cycle ends with cytokinesis, which physically divides the mother cell in two and allows the cycle to resume in the newly individualized daughter cells. However, during germline development in nearly all metazoans, dividing germ cells undergo incomplete cytokinesis and germ cells stay connected by intercellular bridges which allow the exchange of cytoplasm and organelles between cells. The near ubiquity of incomplete cytokinesis in animal germ lines suggests that this is an ancient feature that is fundamental for the development and function of this tissue.

Glycosylated NPs, including liposomes, are known to target various receptors involved in cellular carbohydrate transport, of which the mannoside binding receptors are attracting particular attention for their expression on various immune cells, cancers, and cells involved in maintaining central nervous system (CNS) integrity. As part of our interest in NP drug delivery, mannosylated glycoliposomal delivery systems formed from the self-assembly of amphiphilic neoglycolipids were developed, with a C-alkyl mannopyranoside (ML-C) being identified as a lead compoundcapable of entrapping, protecting, and improving the delivery of structurally diverse payloads. However, ML-C was not without limitations in both the synthesis of the glycolipids, and the physicochemical properties of the resulting glycoliposomes.

Anthocyanins Formulated with Carboxymethyl Starch for Gastric and Intestinal Delivery.

Anthocyanins obtained from jambolan have been used as active agents in different carboxymethyl starch-based tablet formulations and their release profiles evaluated in simulated gastric fluids (SGF) and simulated intestinal (SIF) fluids. Structural analysis highlighted a strong interaction between anthocyanins and carboxymethyl starch, evidenced by scanning electron microscopy and infrared analysis. Tablet dissolution behavior varied according to the pH of the media, being controlled by the swelling and/or erosion of the polymeric matrix.

Do anti-HIV drugs pose a threat to photosynthetic microorganisms?

We investigated the occurrence and risk assessment of three anti-HIV drugs [(tenofovir (TNF), lamivudine (LMV) and efavirenz (EFV)] in urban rivers from Curitiba (Brazil), as well as the individual and combined effects of their environmental representative concentrations on the freshwater periphytic species Synechococcus elongatus (Cyanobacteria) and Chlorococcum infusionum (Chlorophyta). The three studied drugs, except TNF, were found in 100% of the samples, and concentrations in samples ranged from 165 to 412 ng TNF L, 173-874 ng LMV L and 13-1250 ng EFV L. Bioassays using artificial contaminated water showed that at environmental concentrations, TNF and LMV did not represent environmental risks to the studied photosynthetic organisms.

Nonlinear thermal lensing of high repetition rate ultrafast laser light in plasmonic nano-colloids.

We report on experimental observations of phenomenological self-trapping in plasmonic colloids of varying plasmon peaks in the visible/near infrared. A femtosecond (fs) oscillator is used in both pulsed (35 fs, 76 MHz) and continuous wave (cw) operation for comparison. We show that for both modes and for all examined colloids (and under typically applied external focusing conditions in self-trapping studies in colloidal media) nonlinear propagation is governed by thermal defocusing of the focused beam, which precedes the steady-state regime reached by particle diffusion, even far from the plasmon resonance (or equivalently for non-plasmonic colloids, even for low absorption coefficients).

The microbial carbon pump (MCP) hypothesis suggests that successive transformation of labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by prokaryotes produces refractory DOC (RDOC) and contributes to the long-term stability of the deep ocean DOC reservoir. We tested the MCP by exposing surface water from a deep convective region of the ocean to epipelagic, mesopelagic, and bathypelagic prokaryotic communities and tracked changes in dissolved organic matter concentration, composition, and prokaryotic taxa over time. Prokaryotic taxa from the deep ocean were more efficient at consuming DOC and producing RDOC as evidenced by greater abundance of highly oxygenated molecules and fluorescent components associated with recalcitrant molecules.

This approach is based on the application of a functional protecting group strategy that not only masks the reactivity of sensitive groups during crucial steps but also possesses a moiety desired in the final target, which is transferred to the substrate at the time of deprotection. This synthesis highlights an aza-Michael-Smiles ring-closure cascade, which enables the formation of a tetracyclic system from a nosylamide protecting group.

The Importance of Energy Theory in Shaping Elevational Species Richness Patterns in Plants.

Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain elevational species richness patterns; however, evaluating their importance remains a challenge, as mountains that are nested within different biogeographic regions have different environmental attributes. Here, we conducted a comparative study for trees, shrubs, herbs, and ferns along the same elevational gradient for 22 mountains worldwide, examining the performance of hypotheses of energy, tolerance, climatic variability, and spatial area to explain the elevational species richness patterns for each plant group. Results show that for trees and shrubs, energy-related factors exhibit greater explanatory power than other factors, whereas the factors that are associated with climatic variability performed better in explaining the elevational species richness patterns of herbs and ferns.
