Effect of ultrasonic root-end cavity preparation on dentinal microcrack formation: A micro-computed tomography study.

J Conserv Dent

January 2019

Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Subharti Dental College and Hospital, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how different ultrasonic root-end preparation tips (diamond vs. zirconium nitride-coated) affect the formation and growth of microcracks in tooth roots during endodontic surgery.
  • Twenty-eight premolar teeth were tested for preexisting microcracks, prepared, and then scanned to measure any new cracks that developed after using the ultrasonic tips.
  • The results showed a slight increase in cracks with both types of tips, but the differences were not statistically significant, indicating that both tips similarly contribute to crack formation when preexisting cracks are present.

Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate and compare fluoride ion release by Cention-N (self-cure and light-cure) and conventional glass-ionomer cement (GIC) at different pH and time intervals.

Methodology: Cavities of similar dimensions were prepared in mandibular molars and restored with Cention-N (by self-cure and light-cure techniques) and GIC. Samples were stored in deionized water, and the cumulative fluoride ion release and change in pH were assessed utilizing spectrophotometer and pH meter, respectively, at the end of 7 days, 14 days, and 21 days.

Antrochoanal polyps (ACPs) are benign lesions that arise from the mucosa of the maxillary antrum, grow into the maxillary sinus, and reach the choana with nasal obstruction being their main symptom. Most of these lesions are small and clinically silent and found as incidental finding, but large cysts which occupy the entire antrum have also been reported in literature. Nasal endoscopy and computer tomography (CT) are the golden standard in the diagnosis of ACPs, and enucleation by Caldwell-Luc approach is the recommended treatment for larger antral cysts.
