M1 macrophages are involved in inflammation by producing proinflammatory cytokines, whereas M2 macrophages are associated with wound healing and tissue regeneration by producing anti-inflammatory cytokines. MicroRNAs are involved in macrophage polarization. To evaluate whether miR-15a/16 is involved in macrophage polarization under tumour or inflammation microenvironments, we observed the growth of transplanted hepatic cancer (H22) cells or severity of dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in 8-week-old miR-15a/16 knockout (KO) mice.

We report a case of 50-year-old man with a severe acute ischemic stroke followed by intracerebral hemorrhage and brain abscess due to systemic infection. His initial intracranial radiographic findings were normal but three days later MRI scan of the brain revealed well-defined rounded cystic lesion on the T2-weighted and T1-weighted images in the right basal ganglia; the lesion presented an area of diffusion restriction on DWI; lately the lesion was confirmed to be an early stage of cerebral abscess. A week later the patient was noted to have worsening neurological status and left extremity weakness, and emergency brain CT scan revealed massive intracerebral hemorrhage in the right occipital lobe; he underwent intracranial hematoma evacuation surgery.

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation is now considered as an effective treatment strategy for traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). However, several key issues remain unresolved, including low survival rates, cell dedifferentiation, and tumor formation. Recent studies have demonstrated that the therapeutic effect of transplanted stem cells is primarily paracrine mediated.

Unlabelled: Increasing evidence indicates that decellularized extracellular matrices (dECMs) derived from cartilage tissues (T-dECMs) or chondrocytes/stem cells (C-dECMs) can support proliferation and chondrogenic differentiation of cartilage-forming cells. However, few review papers compare the differences between these dECMs when they serve as substrates for cartilage regeneration. In this review, after an introduction of cartilage immunogenicity and decellularization methods to prepare T-dECMs and C-dECMs, a comprehensive comparison focuses on the effects of T-dECMs and C-dECMs on proliferation and chondrogenic differentiation of chondrocytes/stem cells in vitro and in vivo.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of preconditioning of physiological cyclic stretch (CS) on the overexpression of early pro-inflammatory cytokines [including tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-8] during the inflammatory response induced by pathologically mechanical stretch in lung epithelial cells, and to determine its molecular mechanism of action. Cells were subjected to 5% CS for various durations (0, 15, 30, 60 and 120 min) prior to 6 h treatment with pathological 20% CS. In a separate experiment, cells were preconditioned with physiological 5% CS or incubated with a nuclear factor (NF)-κB inhibitor, pyrroldine dithiocarbamate (PDTC).

Growing evidence indicates that infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP)-derived stem cells (IPFSCs) exert robust proliferation capacities and multilineage differentiation potentials. However, few papers summarize the advantages that the IPFP and IPFSCs have in regenerative medicine. In this review we delineate the development and anatomy of the IPFP by comparing it with an adjacent fibrous tissue, synovium, and a more frequently harvested fat depot, subcutaneous adipose tissue.

Background/aims: Studies have shown that a change in endothelin receptor expression in the artery is related to pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). However, the mechanism underlying this change remains unclear.
Methods: To test whether the distribution of endothelin receptor type-A (ETAR) and type-B (ETBR) plays an important role in PIH, a reduction of uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) rat model was used to mimic some of the features of PIH; the resulting variable endothelin receptor expression was investigated in the media and intima of the aorta.

Brain dysfunction is a common complication after sepsis and is an independent risk factor for a poor prognosis, which is partly attributed to the dysregulated inflammatory response and oxidative damage. Melatonin regulates the sleep-wake cycle and also has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, yet the protective effects of melatonin on sepsis-induced neurobehavioral dysfunction remain to be elucidated. In the present study, melatonin was administered intraperitoneally daily at a dose of 10 mg/kg for three consecutive days immediately (early treatment) or 7 days (delayed treatment) after sham operation or cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), followed by an additional treatment in drinking water until the end of behavioral tests.
