Influenza, COVID-19, tetanus, pertussis and hepatitis B pose increased risk for pregnant women and infants and could be mitigated by maternal immunization. In India Tetanus-diphtheria (Td) and COVID-19 vaccines are recommended during pregnancy, while influenza and tetanus-acellular pertussis-diphtheria (Tdap) vaccines are not. We conducted a multicenter study from November 2021 to June 2022 among pregnant women ( = 172) attending antenatal clinics in three public hospitals in West Bengal, to understand the factors that influence women's decisions to get vaccinated during pregnancy.

Introduction:  The primary goal of periodontal therapy is to arrest the inflammatory disease process which is done by non-surgical and surgical therapies in order to reduce the microorganisms. The outcome of periodontal therapy may not reveal the desired results owing to inaccessible areas for instrumentation, pathogenicity, resistance of the microorganisms, or even due to compromised host response to the treatment. Thus, adjunctive laser therapy has been proposed as a novel treatment modality in the treatment of periodontal disease.

Residing obligatorily as amastigotes within the mammalian macrophages, the parasite Leishmania donovani inflicts the potentially fatal, globally re-emerging disease visceral leishmaniasis (VL) by altering intracellular signaling through kinases and phosphatases. Because the phosphatases that modulate the VL outcome in humans remained unknown, we screened a human phosphatase siRNA-library for anti-leishmanial functions in THP-1, a human macrophage-like cell line. Of the 251 phosphatases, the screen identified the Ca-activated K-channel-associated phosphatase myotubularin-related protein-6 (MTMR6) as the only phosphatase whose silencing reduced parasite load and IL-10 production in human macrophages.

Article Synopsis
  • India launched its COVID vaccination drive on January 16, 2021, but successful implementation requires addressing factors beyond just having an effective vaccine, particularly in vulnerable populations like tribal communities.
  • A study conducted between June and November 2021 in West Bengal revealed that 36.9% of tribal participants were hesitant to get vaccinated, primarily due to fears of side effects and linked to factors like decreased income and lack of trust in healthcare systems.
  • To combat vaccine hesitancy, the study suggests enhancing knowledge and awareness through education, increasing healthcare worker involvement, and establishing vaccination centers in tribal areas.
