Striae gravidarum is a common dermatologic condition for females caused by multiple factors during pregnancy. It remains a therapeutic challenge especially in the striae alba (SA) stage, generating psychological and emotional distress to those affected. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of 1565-nm non-ablative fractional laser (NAFL) and fractional microneedle radiofrequency (MRF) for treatment of SA striae gravidarum.

Glucocorticoid-Induced Skin Atrophy: The Old and the New.

Clin Cosmet Investig Dermatol

December 2020

Clinical Department, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, "Dunarea de Jos" University, Galati, Romania.

Glucocorticoids are major therapeutic agents highly used in the medical field. Topical glucocorticoids have biologic activities which make them useful in dermatology - anti-inflammatory, vasoconstrictive, immune suppressive and antiproliferative, in treating inflammatory skin disorders (allergic contact eczema, atopic hand eczema, nummular eczema, psoriasis vulgaris or toxic-irritative eczema). Unfortunately, the beneficial effects of topical glucocorticoids are shadowed by their potential for adverse effects - muscle or skin atrophy, striae distensae, rubeosis or acne.

Background And Objective: There is no validated instrument to assess the clinical severity of striae distensae. Here, we aimed to develop a striae distensae severity scale.

Material And Methods: After a Delphi-based consensus, 15 items related to striae severity were assessed in 110 areas (breasts, abdomen, and buttocks) from 45 participants.

Mechanical forces and Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Exp Dermatol

February 2021

Department of Dermatology, Zealand University Hospital, Roskilde, Denmark.

The mechanism by which inflammatory skin disease forms localized patterns of lesions is poorly understood. Hidradenitis suppurtiva (HS) is strikingly located to intertriginous areas. These areas are subject to considerable mechanical stress (friction, pressure and shear forces).

Background: The leaves of Tasmannia lanceolata mainly contain polygodial that is known to exhibit a range of biological functions including anti-inflammatory effects.

Aims: These studies aimed to assess the effects of Tasmannia lanceolata extract (TLE) on skin and more particularly on stretch marks in women.

Patients/methods: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study was carried out on 29 women, aged from 25 to 60 years, to investigate the effects of TLE on stabilized stretch marks.

Striae gravidarum and different modalities of therapy: a review and update.

J Dermatolog Treat

May 2022

Department of Dermatology, Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Hunan Key Laboratory of Medical Epigenomics, Changsha, PR China.

The term striae gravidarum (SG) refers to a kind of striae distensae (SD) that develops particularly during pregnancy. According to the level of maturity of the lesions, SG is divided into striae rubra (SR) and striae alba (SA). The pathogenesis remains unclear; recent studies have implicated abnormalities in elastic fibers, collagen fibrils, and other extracellular matrix (ECM) components.

Is striae gravidarum a sign of spontaneous premature birth?

J Matern Fetal Neonatal Med

September 2022

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Selçuk University Medicine Faculty, Selçuklu, Konya, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study explored the link between striae gravidarum (stretch marks) and preterm delivery among pregnant women, analyzing various factors related to the severity of striae.
  • - Conducted from November 2018 to February 2019, the study included 292 women and found that those in the preterm labor group generally had lower severity scores of striae and specific patterns of striae distribution compared to those who delivered at term.
  • - Key findings indicated that the presence of striae on breasts was associated with preterm delivery, while no significant differences in pregnancy length were noted across different severity levels of striae.

The aim of this study is to describe the efficacy and safety of CO fractional laser to treat striae distensae (SD), before (T0) and 1 month after the last laser session (T1), in patients following different protocols based on the number of laser sessions, ≤4 and > 4. Efficacy was estimated with global assessment improvement scale (GAIS) performed by both physicians and patients, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), dermatology life quality index (DLQI). Safety was evaluated through pain assessment and adverse events.

Restorative oncodermatology: Diagnosis and management of dermatologic sequelae from cancer therapies.

J Am Acad Dermatol

September 2021

Dermatology Service, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York; Department of Dermatology, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, New York.

The long-term survival of patients with cancer has risen dramatically during the last few decades. Despite this remarkable success, the same treatments that have enabled cure or remission often secondarily affect the skin, hair, and nails. Conditions including scarring, striae distensae, persistent alopecia, pigmentary changes, nail alterations, chronic radiation dermatitis, and radiation fibrosis have been associated with anxiety, depression, decreased quality of life, and impaired function.

Utility of platelet-rich plasma for treatment of striae distensae: A current exploration.

J Cosmet Dermatol

February 2021

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has recently become a popular treatment for various skin conditions, including striae distensae, acne scars, traumatic scars, hair regrowth, and cutaneous rejuvenation. Although PRP has been utilized in orthopedics for many years, its recent entry into dermatology has been met with controversy. While the recent research has generally been limited and is often contradictory, this has differed from the persuasive marketing campaigns targeting patients and consumers.

Background: Striae distensae (SD) are common skin conditions.

Objectives: This study was done to test the hypothesis that 'the use of microneedling (MN) before platelet-rich plasma (PRP) application will allow for deeper penetration and therefore, augment its efficacy in the treatment of SD.'

Patients And Methods: Forty patients with SD were divided into (i) Group I, the patients were treated with MN only, and (ii) Group II, the patients were treated with combined MN-PRP.
