PhD Trials, Avenida Afonso Costa 22 S/L dta, 1900-036, Lisbon, Portugal.

Article Synopsis
  • Striae distensae (SD), commonly known as stretch marks, primarily affect women and can lead to psychological and cosmetic concerns; researchers assessed the effectiveness of autologous micrografting treatment (AMT) with Rigenera technology for managing SD.
  • The study involved 10 healthy women aged 24 to 65, who underwent a microneedling treatment and AMT on opposite sides of their glutes/thighs, using their own skin cells for the grafting process to compare effects.
  • Results showed significant improvements in skin appearance and health, including reduced roughness, increased hydration and elasticity, and improved skin circulation three months post-treatment with AMT outperforming traditional microneedling.

Article Synopsis
  • Striae distensae, or stretch marks, are atrophic scars that can cause cosmetic concerns, and previous studies have assessed the effectiveness of fractional CO laser and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments separately.
  • This study aimed to compare the safety and effectiveness of fractional CO laser alone versus in combination with PRP in treating stretch marks in 24 patients.
  • Results showed that while both treatments led to improvement, the combination of CO laser and PRP resulted in slightly better outcomes, with common side effects like hyperpigmentation resolving over time.

Article Synopsis
  • Striae distensae (SD) are challenging skin lesions affecting quality of life, and new hybrid laser technologies show promise in non-invasive treatment options.
  • A study involving 28 adults treated with a hybrid laser system showed significant aesthetic improvement, as measured by the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale, with a mean score of 7.36 and high patient satisfaction.
  • Results indicated no adverse events, and the effectiveness of the treatment appeared to be independent of patient demographics, suggesting it could be widely adopted for treating SD.

The skin is a complex organ, a system that influences and is influenced by the body system, with different skin layers always mechano-biologically active. In the presence of a lesion that damages the dermis, the skin undergoes sensory, morphological, and functional alterations. The subsequent adaptation is the formation of scar tissue, following distinct and overlapping biological phases.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between skin conditions and various health parameters in children and adolescents with obesity, focusing on how these skin issues affect their quality of life (QoL).
  • A total of 103 participants (average age 11.6 years) showed a high prevalence of skin problems like striae distensae and acne vulgaris, which were linked to higher body mass index (BMI) and insulin resistance as measured by the HOMA score.
  • Findings suggest that skin lesions in obese youth are common and may indicate underlying health issues, highlighting the need for regular skin assessments and collaborative healthcare strategies to enhance overall well-being.

The aims of this study were to characterize and to compare the structural alterations of collagen and elastic fibers in the abdominal stretch marks of patients submitted to intralesional and per quadrant (region close to stretch marks) Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment, as well as, to establish the possible mechanisms of action of this treatment involving toll-like receptors (TLRs) signaling pathways and growth factors. Incisional biopsies were collected from abdominal stretch marks with a 2 mm diameter punch in female patients, at the beginning of treatment, after 6 and 12 weeks of treatment, and submitted to morphological analyzes of elastic and collagen fibers, and immunohistochemistry for TLRs signaling pathways and growth factors. Our results demonstrated PRP per quadrant treatment was most effective in reducing the area of the abdominal stretch marks, with consequent stimulation of the synthesis and remodeling of collagen and elastic fibers.
