Alveolar soft part sarcomas in young patients: The French national NETSARC+ network experience.

Eur J Surg Oncol

September 2024

SIREDO Oncology Centre (Care, Innovation and Research for Children, Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer), Institut Curie, Paris-Saclay University (PSL), Paris, France.

Background And Aims: Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is an ultra-rare chemo-resistant sarcoma in children, occurring preferentially in young adults. We aimed to describe and compare its clinical presentation and behaviour in children and young adults to determine whether the same therapeutic strategy should be addressed for both populations.

Methods: National retrospective multicentre study of children (0-18 years) vs.

Characteristics, management, and outcomes of active cancer patients with cardiogenic shock.

Eur Heart J Acute Cardiovasc Care

October 2023

Department of Cardiology, CHU Clermont-Ferrand, CNRS, Université Clermont Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients with active cancer who were admitted for cardiogenic shock, finding that they made up about 6.6% of the 772 enrolled patients.
  • Although active cancer patients had similar initial in-hospital outcomes as non-cancer patients, they required more intensive drug management but received less mechanical support.
  • While both groups had similar 30-day mortality rates, the active cancer group had significantly higher long-term mortality rates at 1 year, indicating that active cancer dramatically impacts survival after initial treatment for cardiogenic shock.

Precision pain management in interventional radiology.

Clin Radiol

April 2023

Department of Interventional Radiology, University Hospital of Strasbourg, 67000, Strasbourg, France; School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences, King's College London, Strand, London, WC2R 2LS, UK.

Pain is a common manifestation of several benign and malignant conditions. Inadequate response to conservative therapies is often succeeded by incremental use of analgesics and opioids; however, such an approach is often ineffective, not well tolerated by patients, and carries the risk of addiction leading to the opioid crisis. Implementing minimally invasive percutaneous procedures, performed by interventional radiologists has proven to be successful in providing safe, effective, and patient-specific therapies across a wide range of painful conditions.

International consensus on radiotherapy in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer.

Transl Lung Cancer Res

September 2022

Department of Radiation Oncology, Shanghai Chest Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer, particularly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), is the top cause of cancer-related deaths globally, and advancements in radiotherapy and new therapies are enhancing treatment options beyond just palliative care.
  • A group of international radiotherapy experts worked together to develop evidence-based recommendations for the use of radiotherapy in patients with metastatic NSCLC, focusing on personalized patient management.
  • Radiotherapy can provide quick symptom relief and improve survival rates when used correctly, especially for patients with fewer metastases or brain metastases; however, further research is needed to determine the best treatment combinations and strategies.

Cardiogenic shock among cancer patients.

Front Cardiovasc Med

August 2022

Université de Strasbourg (UNISTRA), Faculté de Médecine, Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg, Nouvel Hôpital Civil, Service de Médecine Intensive-Réanimation, Strasbourg, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer treatments and aging are causing more patients to experience acute cardiovascular diseases, including cardiogenic shock.
  • The causes of cardiogenic shock in cancer patients differ from those in non-cancer patients, requiring a specific management approach that involves multiple medical specialists.
  • Despite the lack of a definitive treatment for cardiogenic shock in cancer patients, intensive supportive care can often help, as many cases may be reversible; recent guidelines can assist in managing these situations.

Aim: To evaluate the effective spread of image-guided thermal ablation in thyroid gland and to characterize its current perceptions among European interventional radiologists.

Materials And Methods: A questionnaire with 29 multiple choice questions about thyroid ablation was sent as an E-blast to 4752 CIRSE members. Only those who completed the survey in all its parts were included in the study.

The national reference network NETSARC+ provides remote access to specialized diagnosis and the Multidisciplinary Tumour Board (MTB) to improve the management and survival of sarcoma patients in France. The IGéAS research program aims to assess the potential of this innovative organization to address geographical inequalities in cancer management. Using the IGéAS cohort built from the nationwide NETSARC+ database, the individual, clinical, and geographical determinants of the 3-year overall survival of sarcoma patients in France were analyzed.

Introduction: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) can induce adverse neurological effects. Due to its rarity as an adverse effect, meningitis has been poorly described. Therefore, meningitis diagnosis and management can be challenging for specialists.

Background: Thoracic SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumors (SMARCA4-UT) are aggressive neoplasms. Data linking BAF alterations with tumor microenvironment (TME) and efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are contradictory. The TME of SMARCA4-UT and their response to ICI are unknown.

Purpose: To retrospectively investigate the safety and oncological outcomes of cryoablation performed on residual/recurring renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in the ipsilateral kidney following partial nephrectomy (PN).

Materials And Methods: Data dealing with patients', RCC, procedure (including the length of the hospital stay), and follow-up (technical efficacy [TE], local tumor progression-free survival [LTPFS], disease-free survival [DFS], metastasis-free survival [MFS], cancer-specific survival (CSS), and overall survival [OS]) were retrospectively collected and analyzed.

Results: Between January 2008 and November 2020, 21 consecutive patients (17 [81%] men; 4 [19%] women; median age 68 years; range 43-82) underwent cryoablation due to residual/recurring RCC in the PN site (15 patients) or de-novo RCC (6 patients) in the ipsilateral kidney.

Desmoid tumours (DT) are rare locally infiltrative soft-tissue tumours which do not metastasise. DT arise sporadically or are associated with familial syndromes, with different clinical and genetic patterns. In recent years there has been an increasing therapeutic role of cryoablation for the treatment of sporadic DT.

For more than two decades, stereotactic radiosurgery has been considered a cornerstone treatment for patients with limited brain metastases. Historically, radiosurgery in a single fraction has been the standard of care but recent technical advances have also enabled the delivery of hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy for dedicated situations. Only few studies have investigated the efficacy and toxicity profile of different hypofractionated schedules but, to date, the ideal dose and fractionation schedule still remains unknown.
