Double-root mandibular third molars are the common types of mandibular third molars that are prone to impac-tion. Based on the summary of clinical cases and experience, the commonly used crown-root separation technique is improved as diagonal root separation technique that divides the roots by the line connecting the distal axis angle to the root furcation. This new method improves the efficiency of the operation and reduces surgical trauma.

[Development of cartilage extracellular matrix in cartilage tissue engineering].

Hua Xi Kou Qiang Yi Xue Za Zhi

April 2019

Dept. of Spine Surgery, Tianjin Hospital, Tianjin 300211, China.

Cartilage tissue engineering, an effective way to repair cartilage defects, requires an ideal scaffold to promote the regeneration performance of stem cells. Cartilage extracellular matrix (CECM) can imitate the living environment of cartilage cells to the greatest extent. CECM not only exhibits good biocompatibility with chondrocytes and stem cells, which can meet the basic requirements of scaffolds, but also promotes chondrocytes to secrete matrix and induce stem cells to differentiate into chondrocytes; as such, this matrix is a better scaffold and has more advantages than existing ones.

Objectives: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a congenital autosomal dominant skeletal disease characterized by multiple craniofacial and dental anomalies. Here, we investigated mutation of the runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) gene, which is considered responsible for most instances of CCD in patients, in a Chinese family with CCD.

Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood lymphocytes of all participants, and mutation analysis was performed using whole-exome and Sanger sequencing.

Sendai virus strain Tianjin, a novel genotype of Sendai virus, has been proven to possess potent antitumor effect on certain cancer cell types although inactivated by ultraviolet (UV). This study was carried out to investigate the in vitro anticancer properties of UV-inactivated Sendai virus strain Tianjin (UV-Tianjin) on human osteosarcoma cells and the underlying molecular mechanism. Our studies demonstrated UV-Tianjin significantly inhibited the viability of human osteosarcoma cell lines and triggered apoptosis through activation of both extrinsic and intrinsic pathways in MG-63 cells.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on creating scaffolds made from cartilage extracellular matrix (CECM) and silk fibroin (SF) to enhance research in cartilage tissue engineering.
  • - Oriented scaffolds were produced using a specific thermal phase separation method and were analyzed for their structure, porosity, water absorption, and elasticity through various imaging and mechanical tests.
  • - Results indicated that the scaffolds had structures similar to natural cartilage, with high porosity (95.7%) and favorable elasticity (65.4 kPa), showing potential for effective use in cartilage tissue engineering.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stomatological Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin 300070, China.

To explore the critical values of temperature perception in various mucosa sites of oral cavity and to draw the perceptive temperature threshold maps in healthy volunteers. To observe the interrelationship between subjective cognitive perception and sympathetic skin response (SSR) under various levels of thermal stimuli. Forty-two healthy volunteers (recruited from the students of Tianjin Medical University, 16 females and 26 males) were enrolled in the present study.

Background: The incidence and mortality rates of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have steadily increased in recent years. A hypoxic microenvironment is one of the most important characteristics of solid tumors which has been shown to promote tumor metastasis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition and angiogenesis. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition and vasculogenic mimicry have been regarded as crucial contributing factors to cancer progression.

Objective: This study aimed to prepare oriented scaffolds derived from a cartilage extracellular matrix (CECM) and to investigate their physicochemical property and compatibility with adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs).

Methods: A fresh porcine articular cartilage was cut into pieces. Cartilage nanofibers with diameters of 50-500 nm were collected through homogenization and centrifugation.

Unlabelled: c-Myc is a well-characterized proto-oncogene that induces cellular transformation and modulates programmed cell death. While recent studies have demonstrated high expression of c-Myc protein in advanced and metastatic melanoma, the clinical and biological implications remain to be fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effect of c-Myc overexpression in melanoma tumorigenesis.

Objective: To compare the anatomy of maxillary sinus in single maxillary posterior edentulous area and the contralateral side without loss of tooth, and to investigate the effect of tooth loss on the anatomy of maxillary sinus by cone-beam CT(CBCT).

Methods: A total of 128 patients with single unilateral single maxillary tooth loss were included in the study. CBCT was taken in these patients and the thickness of the maxillary lateral wall, mucosa thickness of sinus floor and sinus septa of the maxillary sinus were recorded and compared with the contralateral side.

Sphere formation in conditioned serum-free culture medium supplemented with epidermal growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor (tumorospheres) is considered useful for the enrichment of cancer stem-like cells, also known as tumor-initiating cells. We used a gene expression microarray to investigate the gene expression profile of melanoma cancer stem-like cells (MCSLCs). The results showed that MCSLCs highly expressed the following Notch signaling pathway molecules: Notch3 (NM_008716), Notch4 (NM_010929), Dtx4 (NM_172442), and JAG2 (NM_010588).

This study was aimed to develop an ECM-derived biphasic scaffold and to investigate its regeneration potential loaded with BM-MSCs in repair of large, high-load-bearing osteochondral defects of the canine femoral head. The scaffolds were fabricated using cartilage and bone ECM as a cartilage and bone layer, respectively. Osteochondral constructs were fabricated using induced BM-MSCs and the scaffold.

Restoration of a crown-root subgingival fractured tooth, especially at anterior aesthetic zones is still a great challenge for restorative dentists. Crown lengthening procedure alone has the disadvantage of high gingival curve of the final restoration, which was not discontinuous to adjacent teeth and thus compromise cosmetic outcomes. The objective of this report is to display a new interdisciplinary approach which combining endodontic root canal treatment, orthodontic extrusion, periodontal crown lengthening surgery and prosthodontic post-core-crown restoration procedures to restore a crown-root subgingival fractured maxillary central incisor and achieved a satisfied cosmetic result.

Objective: To construct an double-layered tube-shaped poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) scaffold composited with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)/ platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and to evaluate in vivo the axial vascularization from femoral arteriovenous bundle encapsulated.

Methods: Eighteen male adult New Zealand rabbits were assigned randomly into 3 groups: Experimental group (n = 8), experimental control group (n = 8), empty control group (n=2). The femoral arteriovenous bundle were separated and encapsulated in double-layered tubeshaped PLGA scaffold prepared by solution casting and particle leaching.
