Long-term three-dimensional condylar remodeling during presurgical orthodontics and after orthognathic surgery of mandibular retrognathia with high mandibular plane angle.

Clin Oral Investig

December 2022

State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, China.

Objectives: Patients with high mandibular plane facial morphology are the most dominant facial type who experience TMJ abnormalities with resultant condylar resorption, affecting the orthodontic and orthognathic treatment outcomes. The study aimed to quantitatively assess the three-dimensional condylar remodeling during the presurgical orthodontics and after orthognathic surgery of the retrognathic mandible with a high mandibular plane angle. The study also investigated the correlation between the resultant remodeling based on the hypothesis that condylar resorption following orthognathic surgery is a part of a progressive presurgical resorption process.

In the domain of orthodontics, plaster models are contemplated as one of the important tools for diagnosis and treatment planning. In Dentistry, technological advancement has developed in the section of diagnostic devices, for example, the utilization of a 3D intraoral scanner, which can convert plaster models into digital models. With in-office utilization of this system, orthodontists can more meticulously and precisely construct custom braces, clear aligners, and orthodontic appliances.

miR‑27a‑3p negatively regulates osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3‑E1 preosteoblasts by targeting osterix.

Research Institute of Stomatology, Nanjing Medical University, Stomatological Hospital of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210029, P.R. China.

Osteoporosis is a complex multifactorial disorder characterized by microarchitectural deterioration, low bone mass, and increased risk of fractures or broken bones. Balanced bone remodeling is tightly regulated by the differentiation, activity and apoptosis of bone‑forming osteoblasts and bone‑resorbing osteoclasts. MicroRNAs (miRs) are dysregulated in osteoporosis, but whether they control osteogenic differentiation and skeletal biology, or could serve as therapeutic targets remains to be elucidated.

Aim: The contemporary article aims to review and compare various literatures concerning different conclusions regarding the correlation between tooth size discrepancy (TSD) and Angle's malocclusion groups.

Background: Acquiring the ideal occlusion plays one of the major roles while designing the treatment plan for an orthodontic patient, any alterations in the individual tooth sizes are called TSD and will hinder this prime requirement. By determining the correct tooth size ratio, it further helps in acquiring the accurate interdigitation, balanced occlusion, and also predicting the orthodontic treatment results.

: Human jaw bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (h-JBMMSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells with osteogenic differentiation potential. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as crucial modulators of osteoblast differentiation. In this study, we focus on the role of and its target protein in osteoblast differentiation of h-JBMMSCs.

Semaphorin 3A promotes osteogenic differentiation in human alveolar bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.

Exp Ther Med

Department of Very Important People (VIP), Research Institute of Stomatology, Nanjing Medical University, Stomatological Hospital of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210029, P.R. China.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of Semaphorin 3A (Sema3A) in the osteogenic differentiation of human alveolar bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hABMMSCs). To investigate whether Sema3A affects hABMMSC proliferation and osteogenic differentiation, a stable Sema3A-overexpression cell line was generated by infection with the pAdCMV-SEMA3A-MCS-EGFP vector. Cell counting kit-8 and clone formation assays were performed to determine the proliferation ability of hABMMSCs, while cell osteogenic differentiation was assayed using Alizarin Red S staining.

Objectives: To compare patient-centered outcome assessments (POAs) over a 2-week period after five categories of dento-alveolar surgical procedures.

Methods: A total of 339 patients in need of dento-alveolar surgical procedures such as simple tooth extraction (SE), transalveolar extraction (TE), straightforward implant placement (I), implant placement with guided bone regeneration (IGBR), and periodontal surgery (P) in Hong Kong (51.3%) and Nanjing dental clinic were consecutively recruited (2013-2015).

Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China; Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stomatological Hospital of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing, China.

Objective: To provide a precise quantification of the association between alcohol and tobacco consumption trends in head and neck cancer patients over the past 45 years.

Methods: We combined findings from all studies published until March 2014 and evaluated the association between different levels in alcohol and tobacco consumption and head and neck cancers through a meta-analytic approach.

Results: We included 28 studies involving 13830 patients with head and neck cancer.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stomatological Hospital of Jiangsu Province, College of Nanjing Medical University. Nanjing 210029, Jiangsu Province,

Purpose: To explore the clinical effect of functional repair for bilateral cleft lip using modified Mulliken method.

Methods: Sixty-six patients with bilateral cleft lip were selected and assigned to receive modified Mulliken method. During the operation, the prolabium was kept as narrow "tie" shape, the orbicularis oris was anatomically repositioned, and the orbicularis oris ring was re-built.

Background: The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a key process in carcinogenesis, invasion, and metastasis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In our previous studies, we found that neuropilin-1 (NRP1) is overexpressed in tongue squamous cell carcinoma and that this overexpression is associated with cell migration and invasion. Nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) plays an essential role both in the induction and the maintenance of EMT and tumor metastasis.

Age-related changes in anatomic bases for the insertion of zygomatic implants.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

The Research Institute of Stomatology, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China; Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stomatological Hospital of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing, China. Electronic address:

The objectives of this study were to verify whether Chinese patients are well-suited for zygomatic implantation and to observe age-related changes in the linear and angular anatomic bases of the maxilla and zygoma. Using three-dimensional images selected from maxillofacial cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans generated by SimPlant, linear and angular measurements were obtained by simulating zygomatic implantation. The edentulous group comprised 40 subjects aged between 62 and 65 years.

Monocarboxylate transporter 4 facilitates cell proliferation and migration and is associated with poor prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients.

Monocarboxylate transporter 4 (MCT4) is a cell membrane transporter of lactate. Recent studies have shown that MCT4 is over-expressed in various cancers; however, its role in cancer maintenance and aggressiveness has not been fully demonstrated. This study investigated the role of MCT4 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), and found that it is highly expressed in OSCC patients by using immunohistochemistry.

It is common to see a foreign body retained in the soft tissues of oral and maxillofacial region. However, a foreign body retaining in oral and maxillofacial region for more than 10 years and resulting in limitation of mouth opening is rare. This paper reported a 52-year-old man, who had limitation of mouth opening for more than 1 year caused by a stone retaining in right post-maxillary molar area for 10 years.
