Intentional exaggeration of symptoms is a potential problem in contexts where there are financial incentives to appear disabled. Therefore, calibration of tools to accurately evaluate malingering in these contexts is important. The present study used a criterion groups validation design to determine the ability of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) to detect Malingered Pain-Related Disability (MPRD).

The disease of freshwater sponges was first discovered in 2011, when pink samples were found in the Central Basin of Lake Baikal. Subsequently, the visible signs of the disease have changed, and now sponges appear with various symptoms of damage to the body, such as discoloration, tissue necrosis, the formation of brown patches and dirty-purple biofilms on some branches. These signs of the disease are accompanied by the mass death of sponges.

A Validation Study of a Noninvasive Lactate Threshold Device.

Int J Exerc Sci

January 2019

Family and Community Health, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, College Station, TX, USA.

Unlabelled: The lactate threshold is considered a key marker of endurance exercise performance and identification of this threshold is important in writing an exercise training program. Unfortunately, assessment of the lactate threshold has traditionally required venous or capillary blood samples and a specialized meter to assess blood lactate concentrations. Recently, a consumer grade, non-invasive device was developed to determine muscle oxygenation and estimate the lactate threshold.

Here, we report an experimental study of the effect of toxic metal ions on photosensitized singlet oxygen generation for photodegradation of PAH derivatives, Anthracene-9,10-dipropionic acid disodium salt (ADPA) and 1,5-dihydroxynapthalene (DHN) and photoinactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria by using cationic meso-tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphine tetrachloride (TMPyP) as a singlet oxygen photosensitizer. Three s-block metals ions, such as Na , K and Ca and five toxic metals such as Cd , Cu , Hg , Zn and Pb were studied. The s-block metal ions showed no change in the rate of photodegradation of ADPA or DHN by TMPyP, whereas a dramatic change in the photodegradation of ADPA and DHN was observed in the presence of toxic metals.

Male-male competition and female mate choice may both play important roles in driving and maintaining reproductive isolation between species. When previously allopatric species come into secondary contact with each other due to introductions, they provide an opportunity to evaluate the identity and strength of reproductive isolating mechanisms. If reproductive isolation is not maintained, hybridization may occur.

We previously reported that a Ru-bound flavonolate model of flavonol dioxygenases, [Ru(bpy)(3-hydroxyfla)][PF], photochemically reacts with dioxygen in two different manners. Broad-band excitation generates mixtures of products characteristic of 1,3-addition of dioxygen across the central pyrone ring, as is observed in enzymatic reactions. However, low temperature excitation at wavelengths longer than 400 nm generates a unique Ru-bound 2-benzoatophenylglyoxylate product resulting from a 1,2-dioxetane intermediate.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how college men's beliefs about gender and their communication styles affect their attitudes and intentions regarding sexual consent, especially in light of shifting college consent policies.
  • 370 undergraduate men participated in online surveys to assess factors like hypermasculinity, rape myth acceptance, and sexual communication assertiveness related to consent.
  • Findings indicate that assertive sexual communication positively affects consent-related outcomes, while beliefs in token resistance and rape myths have negative impacts; hypermasculinity had no significant effect. Programs focusing on improving consent communication should target harmful beliefs and promote assertive communication skills.
