Background: cell tracking after transplantation in regenerative medicine remains an unmet challenge and limits current understanding of the wound healing mechanism through cell-based therapies. This study investigated tracking of human Wharton's jelly stem cells (hWJSCs) seeded onto an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) and labeled with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in burn injury.

Method: The hWJSCs were characterized and assessed for growth kinetics.

Angiogenesis and Its Targeting in Glioblastoma with Focus on Clinical Approaches.

Cell J

October 2022

Department of Tissue Engineering and Applied Cell Sciences, School of Advanced Technologies in Medicine, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Angiogenesis is a characteristic of glioblastoma (GBM), the most fatal and therapeutic-resistant brain tumor. Highly expressed angiogenic cytokines and proliferated microvascular system made anti-angiogenesis treatments a thoroughly plausible approach for GBM treatment. Many trials have proved to be not only as a safe but also as an effective approach in GBM retardation in a certain time window as seen in radiographic response rates; however, they have failed to implement significant improvements in clinical manifestation whether alone or in combination with radio/chemotherapy.

The venom is a mixture of various compounds with specific biological activities, such as the phospholipase   (PLA) enzyme present in scorpion venom. PLA plays a key role in inhibiting ryanodine receptor channels and has neurotoxic activity. This study is the first investigation of molecular characterization, cloning, and in silico analyses of PLA from Iranian named Maurolipin.

Background: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive and lethal brain cancer, which is incurable with standard cancer treatments. miRNAs have great potential to be used for gene therapy due to their ability to modulate several target genes simultaneously. We found miR-429 is downregulated in GBM and has several predicted target genes from the ERBB signaling pathway using bioinformatics tools.

Cell therapy and tissue engineering as promising candidates for the liver transplantation dilemma are of special interest. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are one of the best sources in this field, but their differentiation methods to hepatocytes have remained challenging. We transduced human iPSCs (hiPSCs) with miR-122 and off-let-7f (hiPSCs ) to evaluate how they can differentiate hiPSCs to hepatocyte-like cells (HLCs) without any extrinsic growth factor.

Neuroblastoma (NB) is a common cancer in childhood responsible for 15 % of fatalities by pediatric cancers. Epigenetic factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of NB. Recently, it has been demonstrated that circular RNAs (circRNAs, ciRNAs), a newly identified class of non-coding RNAs, are also dysregulated in NB.

Background: Stenosis and scar formation after repair of laryngeal tissue defects are serious problems that can significantly influence a patient's quality of life.

Objective: In this study, we evaluated the use of magnetic resonance imaging to assess the efficacy of adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) on cartilaginous regeneration in an experimental rabbit model.

Methods: Ten male white Dutch rabbits each had a 5 mm cartilaginous defect created surgically in the right and left thyroid lamina.

Therapeutic Potential of Bee and Scorpion Venom Phospholipase A2 (PLA2): A Narrative Review.

Iran J Med Sci

July 2022

Research Center for Health Sciences, Institute of Health, Department of Medical Entomology and Vector Control, School of Health, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran.

Venomous arthropods such as scorpions and bees form one of the important groups with an essential role in medical entomology. Their venom possesses a mixture of diverse compounds, such as peptides, some of which have toxic effects, and enzymatic peptide Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) with a pharmacological potential in the treatment of a wide range of diseases. Bee and scorpion venom PLA2 group III has been used in immunotherapy, the treatment of neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is known for its high mortality rate and affects more men than women. The treatment requires invasive surgical interventions, however, the progression of CRC metastasis is difficult to control in most cases. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with their outstanding characteristics have been widely used in the treatment of degenerative diseases as well as cancers.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) as a small subpopulation in tumor bulk are believed to initiate tumor formation and are responsible for the resistance to cancer therapy. The proliferation and differentiation of CSCs result in heterogeneity in a tumor which increases the chance of tumor survival and invasion. Many signaling pathways are abnormally activated or repressed in CSCs.

The aim of this research is to compare the capabilities of Adipose tissue mesenchymal stem cells (AT-MSCs) and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) in the treatment of diabetic male mice with CLI model. Supernatants were collected from C57BL/6 mice isolated AT-MSCs and BM-MSCs, afterward their effects on human umbilical vein endothelial (HUVEC) migration potential were evaluated. Diabetes mellitus type 1 was induced by streptozotocin injection.

Article Synopsis
  • Iranian aromatic waters, especially Ziziphora multiflora (ZM), have long been used as non-alcoholic drinks with medicinal benefits, prompting a study on their chemical makeup and antifungal effects.
  • Chemical analysis of ZM's aromatic water revealed high levels of Carvacrol and Thymol, which showed significant antimicrobial activity against fungal species and inhibited biofilm formation.
  • The findings suggest that ZM aromatic water could be a promising natural treatment for conditions like gastrointestinal candidiasis due to its antifungal and antioxidant properties.

The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a unique process resulting in enhanced cell motility, invasiveness, and metastasis in cancer. The EMT is regulated by several transcription factors, including Snail and Slug, which exert crucial roles during cancer progression. We have studied the effects of Docetaxel as the first-line chemotherapy agent for prostate cancer, and Telmisartan as an anti-hypertensive drug on the expression level of Snail and Slug.

Background: The influence of cutting the sub-diaphragmatic branch of the vagus nerve on heart rate variability (HRV) and inflammatory reaction to severe hemorrhagic shock has not been determined prior to this study.

Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups of Sham, sub-diaphragmatic vagotomized (Vag), subacute (135 ± 2 min) hemorrhagic shock (SHS), and sub-diaphragmatic vagotomized with SHS (Vag + SHS). Hemodynamic parameters were recorded and HRV calculated during multiple phases in a conscious model of hemorrhagic shock.

Osteochondral defects are defined most typically by damages to both cartilage and subchondral bone tissue. It is challenging to develop bilayered scaffolds that regenerate both of these lineages simultaneously. In the present study, an electrospun bilayer nanofibrous scaffold was designed to repair osteochondral lesions.

This study aimed to investigate if Telmisartan as a novel N-cadherin antagonist, can overcome cell migration of cancer cells. We investigated the mechanism and influence of Docetaxel and Telmisartan (as an analogous to ADH-1, which is a well-known N-cadherin antagonist) on cancer cells. The effect of ADH-1 and Telmisartan on cell attachment in PC3, DU145, MDA-MB-468 cell lines using recombinant human N-cadherin was studied.
