The gene encodes an ATP-binding cassette transporter that is expressed specifically in the disc of photoreceptor outer segments. Mutations in the gene are the main cause of retinal degenerations known as "-retinopathies." Recent research has revealed that is expressed in other cells as well, such as hair follicles and keratinocytes, although no information on its significance has been evidenced so far.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), originating from the lack of functional dystrophin, clinically manifests as devastating disease of skeletal muscles with progressive cardiac involvement. HMOX1 promoter polymorphism may reflect different activity of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) that may be critical for DMD progression. Here we generated human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) lines from healthy donors-derived peripheral blood mononuclear cells with different variants of HMOX1 promoter (GT repeats), and engineered by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated deletion of exon 50 of DMD gene.

In this report, we describe the course and successful treatment of a case of complicated infective endocarditis (IE). A patient presented with a high-grade, irregular fever with chills lasting at least 2 months along with dyspnoea, chest pain, fatigue, weight loss, and night sweats during the previous 3 months. As well as cardiac congenital disorders, he was found to have infective aortic valve endocarditis, presumably transmitted from the oral cavity niche.

There is a great need for early diagnosis of ischemic heart disease (IHD), the most common cause of which is haemodynamic disorders caused mainly by obstructive atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. The diagnosis of IHD is usually made with the use of functional tests, which include resting ECG (R) or examination of significant perfusion disorders during exercise using the SPECT method. Despite the fact that the ECG (R) test is commonly used in cardiological diagnostics, it has a limited diagnostic value, especially in people with a low probability of coronary artery disease (CAD).

Poland, with its large drainage area, with 50% contribution of agricultural land and 45% contribution of population to overall agricultural land area and population number in the Baltic catchment, is the largest exporter of riverine nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to the sea. The economic transition has resulted in substantial, statistically significant decline in N, P export from Polish territory to the Baltic Sea. Following the obligations arising from the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) declarations, in the coming years, Poland is expected to reduce riverine N loads by ca.
