Background & Aims: Recent evidence suggests that moderate coffee intake is associated with multiple health benefits, including lower risk of obesity, sarcopenia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population. However, to date, no study has evaluated these associations in kidney transplant recipients (KTR). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association of habitual coffee consumption with obesity, sarcopenia, bone mineral density and CVD risk factors in KTR.

Background: The p53 and p21 proteins are important regulators of cell cycle and apoptosis and may contribute to autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). As genetic polymorphisms may cause changes in protein levels and functions, we investigated associations of TP53 and p21 (CDKN1A) polymorphisms (p53 72 G > C-rs1042522; p53 PIN3-rs17878362; p21 31 C > A-rs1801270; p21 70 C > T-rs1059234) with the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a Southeastern Brazilian population.
Methods: Genotyping of 353 female volunteers (cases, n = 145; controls, n = 208) was performed by polymerase chain reaction, restriction fragment length polymorphism and/or DNA sequencing.

Introduction: Superficial folliculitis of the scalp (SFS) is a common complaint in clinical practice, and initial presentation may be difficult to differentiate as they may appear very similar to each other.
Objectives: The aim of this thesis is to describe the pathologies that occur clinically as folliculitis of the scalp, identify their causes and characteristics and create a standardized classification.
Methods: This is a retrospective clinical, dermoscopic and histopathological study over 10 years of dermatologic consultations.

Coastal eutrophication and urban flooding are increasingly important components of global change. Although increased seawater renewal by barrier openings and channelizing are common mitigation measures in coastal lagoons worldwide, their effects on these ecosystems are not fully understood. Here, we evaluated the relationships between human interventions in the watershed, artificial connections to the sea, and the sediment burial rates in an urban coastal lagoon (Maricá lagoon, Southeastern Brazil).

Introduction: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a chronic disorder associated with several risk factors, and increased Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference are correlated with it is severity.
Aim: To evaluate vascular function, central hemodynamics, and autonomic modulation in obese individuals with moderate and severe OSA.
Methods: Individuals of both sexes, aged 40-70 years and BMI ≥ 30 and < 40 kg/m, were submitted to assessment of heart rate variability, endothelial function by flow-mediated dilatation, central parameters by oscillometry and carotid ultrasound.

Background: The Glittre-ADL test (TGlittre) broadly meets the need for an objective evaluation of physical function, using similar activities to those of daily living.
Objective: To assess whether TGlittre in the preoperative assessment of patients who are candidates for thoracic surgery is associated with measures of pulmonary function, body balance, and quality of life and, secondarily, whether TGlittre may be related to postoperative complications.
Methods: This study evaluated 34 patients in the preoperative period of thoracic surgery.

Essential oils are appreciated worldwide for their pleasant aroma, in addition to their therapeutic, pharmacological, and cosmetic functions. For these reasons, adulteration is a common practice that decreases product quality causing economic and health issues. In this study, we present for the first time the application of a simple, inexpensive and disposable paper-based optoelectronic nose ( colorimetric sensor array) to (i) discriminate sixteen different types of essential oils and (ii) detect adulterated samples.

This study evaluated the functional capacity measured by the Glittre-ADL test (TGlittre) in patients with nondialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (NDD-CKD) and analyzed the test's associations with muscle strength, physical activity level (PAL), and quality of life. Methods: Thirty patients with NDD-CKD underwent the following evaluations: the TGlittre; the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ); the Short Form-36 (SF-36); and handgrip strength (HGS). The absolute value and percentage of the theoretical TGlittre time were 4.

Microsatellites, or Short Tandem Repeats (STRs), are subject to frequent length mutations that involve the loss or gain of an integer number of repeats. This work aimed to investigate the correlation between STRs' specific repetitive motif composition and mutational dynamics, specifically the occurrence of single- or multistep mutations. Allelic transmission data, comprising 323,818 allele transfers and 1,297 mutations, were gathered for 35 Y-chromosomal STRs with simple structure.

(1) Cognitive impairments such as working memory (WM) deficits are amongst the most common dysfunctions characterizing bipolar disorder (BD) patients, severely contributing to functional impairment. We aimed to investigate WM performance and associated brain activation during the acute phase of BD and to observe changes in the same patients during remission. (2) Frontal brain activation was recorded using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during n-back task conditions (one-back, two-back and three-back) in BD patients in their acute depressive ( = 32) and remitted ( = 15) phases as well as in healthy controls ( = 30).
