Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of protein serine/threonine kinases consisting of multiple isoforms whose distinct physiological roles within cells are unknown. The message encoding the nPKC theta isoform, a member of the novel calcium-independent class of PKCs, has recently been shown to be abundant in mouse skeletal muscle. The message for cPKC alpha, a calcium-dependent isoform, was also found to be highly expressed in this tissue.

The author describes his major research activities from the time of his PhD thesis work (1937-1940) on properties of erythrocyte membranes to the present. His involvement in research on circulatory shock during World War II led to a continuing interest in the physiology and pharmacology of smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. From 1956 to 1978, his main areas of research were photorelaxation of blood vessels, factors influencing contractility of cardiac muscle, peripheral adrenergic mechanisms, and receptor theory.

The ability of substance P (SP) to regulate peak benzyl-penicilloyl (BPO)-specific IgE antibody-forming cell (AFC) responses in vivo and the ability of SP and other neuropeptides to regulate BPO-specific memory IgE AFC responses induced in vitro was determined. SP injected subcutaneously into BPO-keyhole limpet hemocyanin (BPO-KLH)-sensitized mice at the time of peak IgE responses suppressed these responses within 48 h (> 90%). The suppression obtained was IgE isotype-specific, dose-dependent, and transient.

The protein kinase C (PKC) family of enzymes is comprised of at least nine isoforms that vary with respect to co-factor dependence, cellular distribution and substrate specificity. Using specific antibodies for alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta and eta PKC isoforms, and Western blot analysis, we found that alpha and zeta PKC are expressed in gastric chief cells. We then used these methods to examine the effects of carbamylcholine, a cholinergic agonist that increases cellular calcium and diacylglycerol concentrations, and PMA, a phorbol ester that activates PKC, on the subcellular distribution of these isoforms.

Regardless of the nontreponemal test used for the screening and diagnosis of syphilis, biological false-positive results (BFPs) are documented in 1%-2% of all cases. An association between BFPs and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in men has been suggested. We conducted a cohort study to determine whether a similar association between HIV seropositivity and BFPs exists for women.

Whole-cell recording techniques were used to record isolated slow inhibitory postsynaptic currents in CA1 pyramidal neurons from rat hippocampal slices. Application of 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione and 3-(2-carboxypiperazin-4-yl)propyl-1-phosphonic acid eliminated excitatory synaptic transmission, resulting in a 38% reduction in slow inhibitory postsynaptic current magnitude. Subsequent addition of the GABAA antagonist picrotoxin caused a further decrease in slow inhibitory postsynaptic current amplitude.

Objectives: This study investigated prediction of arrhythmic events by the signal-averaged electrocardiogram (ECG) and programmed stimulation in patients with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy.
Background: Risk stratification in patients with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy remains controversial.
Methods: Eighty patients with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy and spontaneous nonsustained ventricular tachycardia underwent signal-averaged electrocardiography (both time-domain and spectral turbulence analysis) and programmed stimulation.

Spontaneous ureterocolic fistula is rare and usually caused by urinary calculi. We present the fifth reported case of spontaneous ureterocolic fistula caused by diverticular disease of the colon. Review of these cases revealed a preponderance of women (3:1 ratio), with mean age of 77 years.

By the end of the decade 10 million children will be infected with human immunodeficiency virus. Several potential means of preventing vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus are under study. Although the perinatal use of antiretroviral agents can prevent some of these infections, those agents are neither uniformly effective nor universally available.

The purpose of this study was to compare cytology and colposcopy as predictors of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in women infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A cross-sectional analysis of cytology, colposcopy, and colposcopic biopsy results from 51 HIV-seropositive women attending an ambulatory HIV service was conducted. Cytology slides were reviewed by two cytopathologists blinded to patients' HIV status.

Progress in neurosonographic diagnosis of fetuses and neonates has continued as clinical and imaging experience has increased, technology and technique have improved, and transducers for Doppler and color Doppler imaging have become more available. This review discusses some of the advances in perinatal neurosonographic diagnosis.

We synthesized and iodinated an exendin-4 analogue, [Y39]exendin-4 (700 Ci/mmol), for use as a radioligand to characterize exendin receptors on dispersed pancreatic acini and gastric chief cells from guinea pig. Binding of this bioactive radioligand was rapid, temperature-dependent and specific (not inhibited by other pancreatic or gastric secretagogues). Measurement of the ability of exendin-4 to inhibit the binding of 125I-[Y39]exendin-4 indicated the presence of two classes of receptors.

Objective: Our purpose was to compare characteristics of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in relation to human immunodeficiency virus infection among women referred to a public hospital colposcopy clinic with Papanicolaou smears showing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.
Study Design: An evaluation of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia severity, lesion size, and vulvovaginal lesions with respect to human immunodeficiency virus status was performed.
Results: (1) Human immunodeficiency virus prevalence in 482 women with cytologic characteristics of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia was 13%.

Objective: The authors explored the clinical characteristics and treatment response of African-American and white patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia who presented for treatment at an anxiety disorders clinic.
Methods: One hundred white and 43 African-American patients were evaluated using a structured interview and completed a variety of standardized rating scales. In addition, data regarding clinical characteristics, psychiatric history, childhood history, life stressors, and treatment outcome were obtained by chart review.

Short-term visual memory, as in both implicit priming and explicit recognition tasks, can be demonstrated by decreased reaction times, the ability to preferentially select previously presented objects from lists and the ability to more readily complete previously exposed words from fragmented letters. The visual processing of faces occurs separately from the visual processing of non-face stimuli, within discrete areas of bilateral posterior inferotemporal cortices. While visual recognition and memory of faces are independent of those for non-faces, their processing appears to be similar.
