Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on how factors in a child's immediate environment (microsystem) and broader surroundings (exosystem) influence their development, particularly in forming attachments.
  • Researchers examined the impact of maltreatment and neighborhood risks on attachment between children and their caregivers, studying 170 four-year-olds.
  • Results revealed that maltreatment leads to higher rates of insecure attachment, while neighborhood risk alone did not significantly affect attachment, underscoring the need to consider various ecological influences on attachment development.

Amyloid fibrillogenesis is a pathogenic protein aggregation process that occurs through a highly ordered process of protein-protein interactions. To better understand the protein-protein interactions involved in amyloid fibril formation, we formed nanogold colloid aggregates by stepwise additions of ∼2 nmol of amyloid β 1-40 peptide (Aβ) at pH ∼3.7 and ∼25 °C.

Background: Amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides, such as Aβ or Aβ are regarded as hallmark neuropathological biomarkers associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The formation of an aggregates by Aβ or Aβ-coated gold nano-particles are hypothesized to contain conformation of Aβ oligomers, which could exist only at an initial stage of fibrillogenesis.

New Method: The attempt of in-situ detection of externally initiated gold colloid (ca.

Background: Emerging evidence indicates the existence of bidirectional relations between mothers' mental health and adolescent adjustment, but few studies have examined these relations in contexts of high environmental adversity, including economic deprivation and political violence. Given other empirical connections between political violence and adolescent adjustment problems, the impact of child adjustment problems on maternal mental health may be exacerbated in contexts of sectarian violence.

Methods: Addressing this gap, latent change score modeling was used to examine interrelations between trajectories of maternal mental health and adolescent internalizing symptoms over time in communities afflicted by political conflict.

The adsorption process of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron spike protein to the nano-gold colloid surfaces was examined by monitoring the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band shift of gold-nano particles ranging between diameters of d = 10-100 nm. The externally changed pH between 3 and 11 at 24.5 ± 0.

Gold nano-particles were coated with the spike protein (S protein) of SARS-CoV-2 and exposed to increasingly acidic conditions. Their responses were investigated by monitoring the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band shift. As the external pH was gradually changed from neutral pH to pH ∼2 the peak of the SPR band showed a significant red-shift, with a sigmoidal feature implying the formation of the gold-protein aggregates.

Spectroscopic investigation on the affinity of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to gold nano-particles.

Colloid Interface Sci Commun

January 2021

Department of Chemistry, The State University of New York Geneseo College, 1 College Cir., Geneseo, NY 14454, USA.

The affinity of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (S protein) to gold nano-particles was examined through spectral shifts of SPR (Surface Plasmon Resonance) band. Gold nano-colloidal particles are sensitive to the conformational change of the protein adsorbed over the particles' surface. As the pH value was gradually lowered from approximately neutral pH to an acidic pH ( pH 2), all mixtures of S protein with the gold colloids ≥30 nm in diameter exhibited a drastic red-shift of the average SPR band peak at one pH value more than that observed for bare gold colloids.

Growing up in the aftermath of armed conflict puts youth at a higher risk for psychopathology-particularly in societies like Northern Ireland which continue to be characterized by intergroup tension and cyclical violence. This risk may be heightened during adolescence, when youth are beginning to explore their identities and are becoming more aware of intergroup dynamics in both their immediate communities and the broader society. It is also during this stage when youth increasingly witness or engage in antisocial behavior and sectarian activities.

Links between competitive victimhood and discrimination are well documented. However, the mechanisms how victimhood beliefs remain relevant for decades and how conflict survivors can shape attitudes and behaviours of the post-conflict generations are little understood. Following the Transgenerational Transmission Hypothesis and the Integrated Threat Theory, we propose that the link between parental competitive victimhood and discrimination among their children is mediated through family ethnic socialization and symbolic threat to the in-group.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence (SV) are significant public health issues for women, particularly for college women. IPV and SV have been associated with numerous adverse health consequences and involvement in unhealthy behaviors. Given the health risks and high rates of IPV/SV among college women, it is important to understand and promote screening in this population.

Among the existing sexual assault prevention efforts on college campuses, few use mass communication strategies designed to simultaneously entertain and educate. Although many entertainment-education efforts are guided by social cognitive theory, other theories may be useful in entertainment-education design. Previous research has found that social cognitive theory and social norms theory can successfully influence participants' perceived norms and efficacy related to sexual assault reduction; however, whether such results can be replicated in a naturalistic setting and the extent to which the guiding theoretical foundation may influence outcomes remain unknown.

Biomechanical models are sensitive to the choice of model parameters. Therefore, determination of accurate subject specific model parameters is important. One approach to generate these parameters is to optimize the values such that the model output will match experimentally measured strength curves.

The inability of current recommendations to control the epidemic of diabetes, the specific failure of the prevailing low-fat diets to improve obesity, cardiovascular risk, or general health and the persistent reports of some serious side effects of commonly prescribed diabetic medications, in combination with the continued success of low-carbohydrate diets in the treatment of diabetes and metabolic syndrome without significant side effects, point to the need for a reappraisal of dietary guidelines. The benefits of carbohydrate restriction in diabetes are immediate and well documented. Concerns about the efficacy and safety are long term and conjectural rather than data driven.

This study assessed the speed of recognition of facial emotional expressions (happy and angry) as a function of violent media consumption. Color photos of calm facial expressions morphed to either an angry or a happy facial expression. Participants were asked to make a speeded identification of the emotion (happiness or anger) during the morph.

This study investigated the effects of reading extremely violent versus mildly violent comic books on the interpretation of relational provocation situations. One hundred and seventeen introductory psychology students read either an extremely violent comic book or a mildly violent comic book. After reading the comic books, participants read five hypothetical stories in which a child, caused a relationally aggressive event to occur to another child, but the intent of the provocateur was ambiguous.

This study investigated speaking rate and voice onset time (VOT) in speech produced during simultaneous communication (SC) by speakers with normal hearing. Stimulus words initiated with voiced and voiceless plosives were embedded in a sentence that was spoken and produced with SC. VOT measures were calculated from acoustic recordings and results indicated significant differences between speech-only and SC conditions, with speech produced during SC demonstrating both slower speaking rate and increased VOT of voiceless consonants.
