Importance: Obesity is a major public health concern that is associated with serious health risks and consequences for people who want to be, are, or have been pregnant.
Objective: We will describe the implications and consequences of obesity, and describe the factors fueling obesity's escalating prevalence. We will describe new treatment approaches including glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, which may be an effective strategy for achieving weight loss and for improving the health of people who have been, are, or want to be pregnant.

Skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States, has been well-described in the literature to be associated with environmental factors including ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, the effect of chronic viral infections on risk of skin cancer development, particularly in individuals co-infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis B or C Viruses (HBV/HCV), has yet to be elucidated. This systematic review aims to be one of the first to consolidate existing literature and examine the relationship between skin cancer and HIV/HBV and HIV/HCV co-infections.

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a precise and effective technique for treating skin cancers, necessitating high accuracy and real-time decision-making to ensure complete tumor removal while preserving healthy tissue. The introduction of the Apple Vision Pro (AVP), an advanced mixed-reality headset, presents a potential technological advancement in surgical practice. The present investigation explores the integration of AVP into Mohs surgery, focusing on its potential to enhance preoperative planning, intraoperative guidance, and postoperative analysis.

Alveolar capillary barrier disruption induces local edema and inflammation that impairs pulmonary function and promotes alveolar destruction in COPD. This study aimed to determine how cigarette smoke modulated the serine-threonine phosphatase protein phosphatase 2 A (PP2A) to alter the barrier function of human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HLMVECs). Cigarette smoke exposure lowered overall PP2A activity and enhanced endothelial permeability in HLMVECs.

Purpose Studies regarding the relationship between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) conflict: while some support that AMD is protective against DR, others find the opposite. The mechanism by which AMD may protect against DR is unclear. We sought to assess the association between AMD and DR when controlling for glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type II.

Background: Integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) and the menopausal transition have separately been associated with body composition changes in women with HIV (WWH), but their interaction is unknown.
Methods: From 2006-2019, 1131 non-pregnant WWH with viral suppression [(419 who switched to INSTI (INSTI+); 712 who did not switch (INSTI-)] and 887 women without HIV (WWOH) from the Women's Interagency HIV Study were included. Mixed effect models were used to evaluate change in waist circumference (WC) and BMI by menopausal phase defined using anti-Müllerian hormone, a biomarker of ovarian reserve.

HER2 amplification in cervical cancer has been associated with worse clinical prognosis and a potential favorable response to HER2 inhibitors. Immunohistochemistry for the HER2 receptor is a universally accepted surrogate test for HER2 amplification, but no standardized scoring system currently exists for cervical carcinomas. In this study, we investigated HER2 overexpression in cervical squamous cell carcinoma and correlated it with HER2 amplification using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and molecular methods.

Background: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multiorgan disorder with significant cardiac involvement. ECG abnormalities, including arrhythmias, occur in 80 % of DM1 patients and are the second-most common cause of death after respiratory complications; however, the mechanisms underlying the arrhythmogenesis remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the basis of the electrophysiological abnormalities in DM1 using the DMSXL mouse model.

People with HIV (PWH) who inject drugs (PWID) face many barriers to ART adherence. Kazakhstan has one of the fastest growing HIV epidemics in the world, primarily fueled by injection drug use, yet ART adherence among PWID is low. Social support can help address these barriers, but ART adherence among PWID is rarely examined within the relationship context.
