How One Health Instrumentalizes Nonhuman Animals.

This article interrogates anthropocentrism and nonhuman animal instrumentalization in One Health (OH). It argues that OH's approach to human health and zoonosis focuses too narrowly on furthering certain human interests at the expense of nonhuman animals, which is not sustainable, just, or compassionate. This article also offers an alternative vision for protecting and promoting health for all over the long term that includes the human right to self-determination and the nonhuman animal right to not be exploited or abused.

Central serous chorioretinopathy: An evidence-based treatment guideline.

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a relatively common disease that causes vision loss due to macular subretinal fluid leakage and it is often associated with reduced vision-related quality of life. In CSC, the leakage of subretinal fluid through defects in the retinal pigment epithelial layer's outer blood-retina barrier appears to occur secondary to choroidal abnormalities and dysfunction. The treatment of CSC is currently the subject of controversy, although recent data obtained from several large randomized controlled trials provide a wealth of new information that can be used to establish a treatment algorithm.

A five-year quasi-experimental study to evaluate the impact of empiric antibiotic order sets on antibiotic use metrics among hospitalized adult patients.

Objective: Evaluation of adult antibiotic order sets (AOSs) on antibiotic stewardship metrics has been limited. The primary outcome was to evaluate the standardized antimicrobial administration ratio (SAAR). Secondary outcomes included antibiotic days of therapy (DOT) per 1,000 patient days (PD); selected antibiotic use; AOS utilization; infection (CDI) cases; and clinicians' perceptions of the AOS via a survey following the final study phase.

Hic-5 regulates extracellular matrix-associated gene expression and cytokine secretion in cancer associated fibroblasts.

The focal adhesion protein, Hic-5 plays a key role in promoting extracellular matrix deposition and remodeling by cancer associated fibroblasts within the tumor stroma to promote breast tumor cell invasion. However, whether stromal matrix gene expression is regulated by Hic-5 is still unknown. Utilizing a constitutive Hic-5 knockout, Mouse Mammary Tumor Virus-Polyoma Middle T-Antigen spontaneous breast tumor mouse model, bulk RNAseq analysis was performed on cancer associated fibroblasts isolated from Hic-5 knockout mammary tumors.

Primary prevention of prescription stimulant misuse in first-year college students.

Eight percent of college students report past year prescription stimulant misuse (nonmedical use of stimulants defined as taking stimulants in a manner other than prescribed). Despite this high prevalence rate, primary prevention efforts are lacking on college campuses. A prescription stimulant misuse primary prevention intervention targeting first-year college students was developed, refined, and pilot tested.

Mucocutaneous Manifestations of Recreational Drug Use.

Recreational drug use is increasingly common in the dermatology patient population and is often associated with both general and specific mucocutaneous manifestations. Signs of substance use disorder may include changes to general appearance, skin, and mucosal findings associated with particular routes of drug administration (injection, insufflation, or inhalation) or findings specific to a particular drug. In this review article, we provide an overview of the mucocutaneous manifestations of illicit drug use including cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, hallucinogens, marijuana, and common adulterants to facilitate the identification and improved care of these patients with the goal being to connect this patient population with appropriate resources for treatment.

This case report investigates the concurrent presence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and bipolar disorder (BD) in the transgender population. We present a case involving a 21-year-old female-to-male transgender individual (preferred pronouns - they/them). The patient had a history of psychosis, trauma, gender dysphoria (GD), inconsistent hormone (testosterone) treatments, and a self-attributed diagnosis of "associative identity disorder" with 21 distinct "identities.

Cannabinoid-Associated Hyperemesis Syndrome Treated With Dronabinol: Killing a Poison With the Poison.

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is a medical condition characterized by recurrent nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain in individuals who frequently use cannabis. This case report highlights the successful treatment of CHS using dronabinol, a synthetic cannabinoid compound. A 21-year-old female presented with severe abdominal symptoms, including vomiting and pain, alongside a history of chronic cannabis use.

Metastasis of breast cancer cells to distant tissue sites is responsible for the majority of deaths associated with breast cancer. Previously we have examined the role of class I myosin motor protein, myosin 1e (myo1e), in cancer metastasis using the Mouse Mammary Tumor Virus-Polyoma Middle T Antigen (MMTV-PyMT) mouse model. Mice deficient in myo1e formed tumors with a more differentiated phenotype relative to the wild-type mice and formed no detectable lung metastases.

Here, we developed two messenger RNA (mRNA)-lipid nanoparticle (LNP) vaccines, TU88mCSA and ALCmCSA, using the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 spike sequence, optimized 5' and 3' untranslated regions (UTRs), and LNP combinations. Our data showed that these nanocomplexes effectively activate CD4 and CD8 T cell responses and humoral immune response and provide complete protection against WA1/2020, Omicron BA.

Comparison of Infection Rates between Single-Lumen and Double-Lumen Chest Ports among Patients with Cancer: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis.

Purpose: To compare the port infection rate between single-lumen (SL) and double-lumen (DL) ports and to determine whether the use of a DL port is an independent risk factor for port infection among patients with cancer.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 2,573 adult oncologic patients (aged >18 years) who had either a SL (n = 841) or a DL (n = 1,732) chest port implanted between 2013 and 2020 at a single institution. Patients who had port infection, including port-site infection and port-related bloodstream infection, were identified through chart review.
