Background: Few programs exist to support aging in place for older adults. Age Self Care is a novel program providing older adults with evidence-based information using group sessions embedded within the structure of a community-based organization (CBO) to facilitate behavior change and support aging in place. We report on a preliminary study of Age Self Care conducted in collaboration between the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Division of Geriatrics, At Home With Growing Older (AHWGO), and San Francisco Village (SF Village).

The latent viral reservoir represents one of the major barriers to curing HIV-1. Focus on the "kick and kill" (also called "shock and kill") approach, in which virus expression is reactivated, and then cells producing virus are selectively depleted, has led to the discovery of many latency-reversing agents (LRAs) that have furthered our understanding of the mechanisms driving HIV-1 latency and latency reversal. Thus far, individual compounds have yet to be robust enough to work as a therapy, highlighting the importance of identifying new compounds that target novel pathways and synergize with known LRAs.

Innumerable Culture-Negative Intracranial Abscesses in an Immunocompetent Young Male Diagnosed by 16s rRNA Gene Sequencing.

Here, we present a case of a healthy young man with an initial presentation concerning for infectious encephalitis later found on neuroimaging to have extensive intracranial lesions. Pathological analysis of these lesions was consistent with a bacterial intraparenchymal abscess; however, cultures were negative for a causative organism. Results of gene sequencing from an abscess sample were consistent with infection.

Laryngectomy Margin Assessment: A Little Help From a Template.

Laryngectomy margin assessment is an important part of patient care and can affect outcomes. There is no standard approach to grossing laryngectomy specimens, with variations in the published guidelines. A uniform approach to margin assessment may be helpful to improve patient care and future research.

We recently reported that a novel chimeric peptide (GEP44) targeting both the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) and neuropeptide Y1- and Y2 receptor (Y1R and Y2R) reduced energy intake and body weight (BW) in diet-induced obese (DIO) rats. We hypothesized that GEP44 reduces energy intake and BW primarily through a GLP-1R dependent mechanism. To test this hypothesis, GLP-1R mice and GLP-1R null (GLP-1R) mice were fed a high fat diet for 4 months to elicit diet-induced obesity prior to undergoing a sequential 3-day vehicle period, 3-day drug treatment (5, 10, 20 or 50 nmol/kg; GEP44 vs the selective GLP-1R agonist, exendin-4) and a 3-day washout.

Warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (WAIHA) occurs due to antibodies active at body temperature that react with antigens on the surface of red blood cells, leading to hemolysis. Antibodies are typically IgG. WAIHA, associated exclusively with IgA antibodies, remains rare.

Interleukin (IL)-1/IL-6-Inhibitor-Associated Drug Reaction With Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DReSS) in Systemic Inflammatory Illnesses.

Background: After introducing IL-1/IL-6 inhibitors, some patients with Still and Still-like disease developed unusual, often fatal, pulmonary disease. This complication was associated with scoring as DReSS (drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms) implicating these inhibitors, although DReSS can be difficult to recognize in the setting of systemic inflammatory disease.

Objective: To facilitate recognition of IL-1/IL-6 inhibitor-DReSS in systemic inflammatory illnesses (Still/Still-like) by looking at timing and reaction-associated features.

Introduction: US child firearm fatality rates have risen since 2013. Child Access Prevention (CAP) laws aimed at reducing minors' access to firearms have existed since the 1980s. However, specific requirements for safe storage of firearms, standards of negligence, and penalties for offenders vary significantly by state, yielding a heterogeneous body of CAP legislation.

Male Breast Cancer: Imaging Considerations for Diagnosis and Surveillance.

Male breast cancer accounts for less than 1% of all breast cancer cases. The important risk factors for the development of male breast cancer are family history, genetic mutations, obesity, liver disease, alcoholism, exogenous estrogen administration, and radiation exposure to the chest area. Despite its rarity, numerous studies have investigated the data on imaging considerations (mammogram, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)), but have addressed only certain aspects of male breast cancer.

C5 palsy following esophageal diverticulum resection.

Background: C5 palsy (C5P) is a recognized potential postoperative complication of cervical spine surgery but has rarely been reported following an open esophageal diverticulectomy.

Methods: A 61-year-old underwent an open esophageal diverticulectomy for symptomatic Zencker's diverticulum.

Results: Postoperatively, she presented with right upper extremity weakness and sensory deficits consistent with a C5P that was later confirmed by electromyography.

Hinman Syndrome: A Rare Entity With Neurogenic Bladder-Like Symptoms.

Hinman syndrome, as is the case with many other rare conditions, is a disease very commonly under-considered or missed in the diagnosis of patients with the presenting symptoms. Clinical and radiographic manifestations of the condition are easily confused with neurogenic bladder without proper history collection and neurological examination. Patients typically present with symptoms including enuresis, urinary retention, reoccurring urinary tract infections, and encopresis.

Where someone lives is a major determinant of population health. In the United States, people who live in Health Professional Shortage Areas are considered medically underserved and have a higher propensity for conditions such as stroke, hypertension, and diabetes. Our goal was to better understand the diverse needs of patients presenting to the Crouse Hospital emergency department with stroke symptoms.
