The widespread use of pesticides requires effective detection and quantification tools to improve monitoring of environmental quality. Electrochemical sensors offer a fast and sensitive response, and can also be optimized by combining several constituents and techniques, including biodegradable materials, being useful in the determination of chemical agents from environmental samples. Here, we produced a polymer-based sensor for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol determination, through electrospinning of poly(lactic acid)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) blend with graphite.

Sweet almond oil is a raw material with high-added value used in different products. Then, the aim of this study is to evaluate the quality and purity of 10 body oils based on sweet almond oils currently available in the Brazilian market. Fatty acid composition and triacylglycerol (TAG) profile were determined by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and atmospheric solids analysis probe mass spectrometry (ASAP-MS), respectively.

The quality of poultry by-product meal (PBM) is not standardized in the industry. Several factors are detrimental to PBM and compromise its nutritional value and shelf life. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the main PBM production factors that directly affect its in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVDOM) and protein oxidation (POX).

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation induces photodamage towards cellular macromolecules that can progress to photoaging and photocarcinogenesis. The topical administration of compounds that maintain the redox balance in cells presents an alternative approach to combat skin oxidative damage. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CNPs) can act as antioxidants due to their enzyme-like activity.

Unlabelled: The Juçara fruit ( Martius) has been progressively standing out for presenting significant biological and nutritional activity. Its functional characteristics are related to its high content of anthocyanins, which, when isolated, are highly unstable, limiting their applications. The present research proposed to obtain an anthocyanin-rich extract from the juçara pulp, microencapsulate it with the maltodextrin and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) matrices and evaluate the stability of the microencapsulated anthocyanins against light, pH, and milk development fermented.

Lipase B from Candida antarctica (CalB) is one of the biocatalysts most used in organic synthesis due to its ability to act in several medium, wide substrate specificity and enantioselectivity, tolerance to non-aqueous environment, and resistance to thermal deactivation. Thus, the objective of this work was to treat CalB in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and measure its activity before and after high-pressure treatment. Residual specific hydrolytic activities of 132% and 142% were observed when CalB was exposed to SC-CO at 35 ℃, 75 bar and 1 h and to LPG at 65 ℃, 30 bar and 1 h, respectively.

This study aimed to determine Patulin (PAT) in samples of organically and conventionally grown tomato varieties, to correlate it with their phenolic profile and at evaluating effects of phenolic extracts of tomato samples against the Penicillium expansum CCT 7549 strain. Four varieties of tomatoes (Cherry, Khaki, Italian and Long Life) subject to conventional and organic management were collected in markets in the south of Brazil. PAT was determined in samples by validated method Matrix Solid Phase Dispersion (MSPD) with detection in HPLC-PDA.

Aflatoxins are carcinogenic secondary metabolites produced by several species of , including , an important ear rot pathogen in maize. Most commercial corn hybrids are susceptible to infection by , and aflatoxin contaminated grain causes economic damage to farmers. The creation of inbred lines resistant to fungal infection or the accumulation of aflatoxins would be aided by knowing the pertinent alleles and metabolites associated with resistance in corn lines.

In this work, Chloroquine diphosphate, and the cationic dye Safranin-O were selectively removed from water using the agar-graphene oxide (A-GO) hydrogel, produced via simple one-step jellification process. The morphology of the A-GO biocomposite was characterized and batch experiments were performed, with adsorption isotherms satisfactorily fitting (R > 0.98) Sips (Safranin-O) and Freundlich (Chloroquine) isotherms.

However, PLA is a complex artifact to be designed due to its large size and the multiple conflicting properties that need to be considered to ensure its quality, requiring a great effort for the architect. PLA designing has been formulated as an optimization problem aiming at improving some architectural properties in order to maximize both the feature modularization and the relational cohesion, and to minimize the class coupling.

Most current protocols for the diagnosis of fungal infections are based on culture-dependent methods that allow the evaluation of fungal morphology and the identification of the etiologic agent of mycosis. Most current protocols for the diagnosis of fungal infections are based on culture-dependent methods that enable the examination of the fungi for further identification of the etiological agent of the mycosis. The isolation of fungi from pure cultures is typically recommended, as when more than one species is identified, the second agent is considered a contaminant.

The original description of Aedes Meigen in 1818, written in Latin, was very brief and included a single species, Aedes cinereus. In the last two decades the genus Aedes (Meigen, 1818) has undergone several revisions and reclassifications, with the current proposal being described by Wilkerson in 2015. However, the available keys for morphological identification are still not sufficient to differentiate cryptic species, damaged species, or those with confusing taxonomy.

The fungi associated with leaf litter play a key role in decomposition and can be affected both by the warming water and the invasion of non-native species in riparian vegetation. Warming water and invasion of non-native riparian species on stream fungal communities have been studied mainly in temperate ecosystems. We tested the effects of warming water and non-native plant Psidium guajava on leaf litter decomposition, conidia density, species richness and beta diversity of tropical stream fungi.

The contamination of aquatic environments has increased over time, affecting environmental integrity and human health. Herbicides represent a source of this contamination, and among the most commercialized are the triazines and glyphosate. In contrast, there are natural herbicides, which are less harmful to the environment.

Unlabelled: One of the limitations of the use of corn in the food chain is its contamination with mycotoxins. Reduction in their levels can be achieved by processing the grain, which in the case of corn can be achieved by wet or dry milling. The aim of this study was to compare the distribution of aflatoxins B1 and B2, and fumonisin B1 in corn fractions obtained by dry and wet milling, aiming to identify conditions to mitigate the risk of exposure to these contaminants.

Human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP or amylin) is a hormone co-secreted with insulin by pancreatic β-cells, and is the main component of islet amyloid. Islet amyloid is found in the pancreas of patients with type 2 diabetes and may be involved in β-cell dysfunction and death, observed in this disease. Thus, counteracting islet amyloid toxicity represents a therapeutic approach to preserve β-cell mass and function.

Onychomycosis (OM) is a fungal infection, responsible for about 50% of nail diseases. OM has been attributed to the ability of fungi to naturally organize themselves into biofilms on nail surfaces. However, little is known about the exact role of the biofilm in the etiopathogenesis of OM, as well as its influence in the permeation of a topical treatment.

Objective: Breast cancer (BC) currently has no effective treatment especially for the highly aggressive and metastatic triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Here, we investigated the antitumoral and antimigratory effects of hypericin (HYP) encapsulated on Pluronic F127 (F127/HYP) photodynamic therapy (PDT) against TNBC cell line MDA-MB-231 compared to a nontumorigenic human breast ductal cell line (MCF-10A).
Methods: The phototoxicity/cytotoxicity was assessed by MTT assay, long-term cytotoxicity by clonogenic assay, cell uptake, subcellular distribution, and cellular oxidative stress by fluorescence microscopy, cell death with annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide, PDT mechanism using sodium azide and D-mannitol, and cell migration by wound-healing assay.
