Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how quercetin affects the growth and health of bovine ovarian fragments, focusing on their morphology and oxidative stress levels using 12 ovaries from Nelore heifers.* -
  • Quercetin was tested at concentrations of 0, 10, 25, and 50 μg/mL over 5 or 10 days, with 25 μg/mL yielding the highest number of healthy and developing follicles along with improved antioxidant effects after 10 days.* -
  • Results showed that while 25 μg/mL quercetin significantly preserved the integrity of developing follicles, there were no notable changes in reactive oxygen species or lipid oxidative degradation compared to non-cultivated controls.*

Water stress drastically hinders crop yield, including soybean - one of the world's most relevant feeding crops - threatening the food security of an ever-growing global population. Hemoglobins (GLBs) are involved in water stress tolerance; however, the role they effectively play in soybean remains underexplored. In this study, in silico and in vivo analyses were performed to identify soybean GLBs, capture their transcriptional profile under water stress, and overexpress promising members to assess how soybean cope with waterlogging.

The currently available treatment options for leishmaniasis are associated with high costs, severe side effects, and high toxicity. In previous studies, thiohydantoins demonstrated some pharmacological activities and were shown to be potential hit compounds with antileishmanial properties. The present study further explored the antileishmanial effect of acetyl-thiohydantoins against Leishmania amazonensis and determined the main processes involved in parasite death.

November 2021

Post-Graduation Program in Animal Science with an Emphasis in Bioactive Products, Paranaense University (UNIPAR), Umuarama, Parana, Brazil.

Leptospirosis is an important infectious disease, which can generate large economic losses, especially in the dairy herd. The pathogen that causes this disease may have its entry in Brazilian herds facilitated by the existence of a large extension of land borders. Therefore, the objective of this work was to investigate the presence of DNA and antibodies against spp.

Meteorological parameters modulate transmission of the SARS-Cov-2 virus, the causative agent related to coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) development. However, findings across the globe have been inconsistent attributed to several confounding factors. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between reported meteorological parameters from July 1 to October 31, 2020, and the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in 4 Brazilian cities: São Paulo, the largest city with the highest number of cases in Brazil, and the cities with greater number of cases in the state of Parana during the study period (Curitiba, Londrina and Maringa).

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, affects tissues from different body systems but mostly the respiratory system, and the damage evoked in the lungs may occasionally result in severe respiratory complications and eventually lead to death. Studies of human respiratory infections have been limited by the scarcity of functional models that mimic in vivo physiology and pathophysiology. In the last decades, organoid models have emerged as potential research tools due to the possibility of reproducing in vivo tissue in culture.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the immune-inflammatory response system (IRS) have been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. However, no research examined the associations between BDNF and immune activation both before and after treatment in antipsychotic-naïve first episode psychosis (AN-FEP). This study aims to examine serum BDNF levels and their association with IRS and the compensatory immune-regulatory reflex system (CIRS) in AN-FEP before and after risperidone treatment.

Exploratory factor analysis was applied to determine the chemical differences between fruitbodies of three Agaricus subrufescens mushroom strains [from Japan (JP), Brazil (ABZ), and Belgium (T2)] grown with handmade and commercial supplements. The composition of the ABZ strain cultivated with agro-industrial waste supplement presented a high nutritional composition regarding the amounts of fibre and protein, similar to mushrooms cultivated with the commercial supplement. The chromatographic fingerprints obtained for T2 and JP strains grown with commercial supplements presented similar profiles compared to those cultivated with the supplement based on peanut and the mix of supplements.

Copper is an essential metal for life. However, in excess, it can lead to osmoregulatory disorders and oxidative stress in fish and these effects appear to be species specific. In order to evaluate the effects of copper and to compare the sensitivity of two Neotropical fishes that co-occur in nature as prey (Astyaynax altiparanae) and predator (Hoplias malabaricus), the fish were exposed to three concentrations of Cu (5 μg L, 10 μg L, and 20 μg L) for 96 h.
