Phospholipases A (PLAs) from snake venom possess antitumor and antiangiogenic properties. In this study, we evaluated the antimetastatic and antiangiogenic effects of MjTX-II, a Lys49 PLA isolated from Bothrops moojeni venom, on lung cancer and endothelial cells. Using in vitro and ex vivo approaches, we demonstrated that MjTX-II reduced cell proliferation and inhibited fundamental processes for lung cancer cells (A549) growth and metastasis, such as adhesion, migration, invasion, and actin cytoskeleton decrease, without significantly interfering with non-tumorigenic lung cells (BEAS-2B).

There is limited research on female football players, especially related to their physical and cognitive performance under different climactic conditions. We analyzed the impact of a hot environmental temperature on physical performance and anticipation in elite female football players during a fatigue-inducing intermittent protocol. Elite female players (n = 21) performed the countermovement jump (CMJ) and responded to filmed sequences of offensive play under two distinct environmental temperatures (i.

Malathion is an organophosphate pesticide used in agriculture and control of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. As previous reports have indicated the potential of malathion to compromise testosterone production in in vivo models, the objective of this study was to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the impairment of Leydig cell function, considering its critical role in male reproductive function. To this end, murine Leydig TM3 cells were exposed to concentrations of 1, 10, 100 or 1000 μM malathion for 24 h for evaluation of the compound on cell viability.

Three paintings of Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), one of the most influential English portrait painters of the late 18th century, from the collection of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) - "Francis Rawdon" (1783-1784), "Portrait of Mrs. John Bolton" (1770), and "Drinkstone Park" (1747) - were investigated using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF), employing a W tube anode and an XR-100CR detector. These artworks represent the only paintings by Thomas Gainsborough located in the southern hemisphere.

Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate insecticide used to control pests in crops. Thus, humans are constantly exposed through ingestion of contaminated food or water, inhalation of contaminated air, and through the skin. The juvenile and peripubertal periods comprise a window of development of the reproductive system, sensitive to toxic agents.

This study investigated the use of infrared thermography (IRT) to identify the dark, firm, and dry (DFD) phenomenon in Brazilian beef, which is a significant concern for the industry because of its inferior quality and reduced shelf life. This study examined 113 Nellore bulls and analyzed their minimum and maximum ocular temperatures using IRT. The results highlight the efficacy of thermal images (IRTmax) as a significant predictor, with R values ranging from 0.

Respiratory diseases are among the leading causes of death globally, with the COVID-19 pandemic serving as a prominent example. Issues such as infections affect a large population and, depending on the mode of transmission, can rapidly spread worldwide, impacting thousands of individuals. These diseases manifest in mild and severe forms, with severely affected patients requiring ventilatory support.

The study aimed to investigate the physiological and meat quality differences between Non-Ambulatory, Non-Injured (NANI), and without apparent abnormalities (non-NANI) pigs in a commercial slaughterhouse setting, focusing on the impact of stress and health conditions on the overall well-being and meat quality of the animals. A total of 241 surgically castrated crossbred male pigs from Southern Brazil were analyzed, with 131 non-NANI pigs and 110 NANI pigs. Infrared orbital temperature, rectal temperature, hematological parameters, and meat quality measurements were collected.

Biosurfactants encompass structurally and chemically diverse molecules with surface active properties, and a broad industrial deployment, including pharmaceuticals. The interest is growing mainly for the low toxicity, biodegradability, and production from renewable sources. In this work, the optimized biosurfactant production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa BM02, isolated from the soil of a mining area in the Brazilian Amazon region was assessed, in addition to its antiviral, antitumor, and antimicrobial activities.

Malathion serves as a pivotal pesticide in agriculture and the management of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Despite its widespread use, there is a notable absence of studies elucidating the mechanisms through which malathion may affect the female reproductive system. Consequently, the objective of this investigation was to assess whether exposing juvenile female rats to low doses of malathion during the juvenile and peripubertal periods could compromise pubertal onset, estradiol levels, and the integrity of the ovaries and uterus while also examining the underlying mechanisms of damage.

Epidemiological studies have shown the association of genetic variants with risks of occupational and environmentally induced cancers, including bladder (BC). The current review summarizes the effects of variants in genes encoding phase I and II enzymes in well-designed studies to highlight their contribution to BC susceptibility and prognosis. Polymorphisms in genes codifying drug-metabolizing proteins are of particular interest because of their involvement in the metabolism of exogenous genotoxic compounds, such as tobacco and agrochemicals.

In addition to its highly aggressive nature and late diagnosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) does not respond effectively to available chemotherapeutic agents. The search is on for an ideal and effective compound with low cost and minimal side effects that can be used as an adjunct to chemotherapeutic regimens. One of the mechanisms involved in the pathology of HCC is the oxidative stress, which plays a critical role in tumor survival and dissemination.

The present study evaluated the effects of supplementing VM in grazing cattle during the rearing phase on performance and carcass quality of beef cattle in the finishing phase. Two experiments with a randomized block design were conducted in consecutive years to contrast two post-weaning supplementation strategies using VM at 45 mg/100 kg body weight (BW). In the first year, treatments were protein supplement in the dry season and mineral supplement in the rainy season versus the addition of VM both in the protein and mineral supplements.

Cutting problems consist of cutting a set of objects available in stock in order to produce the desired items in specified quantities and sizes. The cutting process can generate leftovers (which can be reused in the case of new demand) or losses (which are discarded). This paper presents a tree-based heuristic method for minimizing the number of cut bars in the one-dimensional cutting process, satisfying the item demand in an unlimited bar quantity of just one type.

The acute toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in Artemia salina is primarily attributed to the interaction between silver ions (Ag) and chitin, which constitutes the main structural component of the organism's cuticle. To investigate this interaction and gain a deeper understanding of its nature, geometric optimization calculations and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT0) analysis were performed. These calculations aimed to determine the most favorable conformation based on the binding energies of silver ions with chitin and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of their interaction.
