A potential link between mortality, d-dimer values, and a prothrombotic syndrome has been reported in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. The National Institute for Public Health of the Netherlands asked a group of radiology and vascular medicine experts to provide guidance for the imaging work-up and treatment of these important complications. This report summarizes evidence for thromboembolic disease, potential diagnostic and preventive actions, and recommendations for prophylaxis and treatment of patients with COVID-19 infection.

Purpose: Many unhealthy behavioral habits often originate in adolescence. In the literature, the school-based whole school approach is stated be the most promising way to promote healthy behavior. Herein, interventions are evidence based and integrated into the curriculum, while embedded in complementary healthy school policies and environment.

CaCO(3) nanoparticle synthesis by carbonation of lime solution in microemulsion systems.

Nanotechnology

January 2007

Stratingh Instituut, Chemie and Chemische Technologie, State University of Groningen, Nijenborgh 4, 9747 AG Groningen, The Netherlands.

Various aspects of nanoparticle precipitation in gas-reverse micellar systems have been studied. The experimental system chosen for investigation deals with the precipitation of CaCO(3) nanoparticles. The effect of operating variables, such as water-to-surfactant molar ratio, different continuous phases, surfactant concentration and stirring speed, have been investigated experimentally.

A series of arylpiperazine- and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-based arylsulfonamides was synthesized and evaluated for their interactions with the constitutively active 5-HT7 receptor. Effects on basal adenylate cyclase activity were measured using HEK-293 cells expressing the rat 5-HT7. All ligands produced a decrease of adenylate cyclase activity, indicative of their inverse agonism.

Design, synthesis and properties of a degradable polyurethane scaffold for meniscus regeneration.

J Mater Sci Mater Med

April 2004

Department of Polymer Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, State University of Groningen, Nijenborgh 4, 9747AG, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Longitudinal lesions in menisci are among the most frequent orthopedic problems of the knee. Repair by simple techniques is only limited to the vascular part of the meniscus. For repair of the avascular part of the meniscus a scaffold, which will assist the body in the formation of new meniscus cell tissue, might be applicable.

On the basis of a set of 20 diverse 5-HT(7) receptor agonists, the pharmacophore for 5-HT(7) receptor agonism was determined. Additionally two CoMFA models were developed, based on different alignments of the agonists. Both models show good correlations between experimental and predictive pK(i) values and show a high degree of similarity.

Orientation restraints in molecular dynamics simulations using time and ensemble averaging.

J Magn Reson

September 2003

Department of Biophysical Chemistry, State University of Groningen, Nijenborgh 4, 9747 AG Groningen, The Netherlands.

In this article we present methodology for simulating protein dynamics while imposing restraints derived from NMR measurements on partially ordered molecules. Such measurements may include residual dipolar couplings and chemical-shift anisotropies. We define a restraint potential for use in molecular dynamics and energy minimization.

Department of Paediatrics, Beatrix Children's Hospital, State University of Groningen, The Netherlands.

Unlabelled: Research is essential for the improvement of care in patients, including children and incapacitated persons of whom children form a special group. Inclusion of an individual in research requires informed consent. As informed consent is impossible in children, they might be excluded from studies.

In systematic toxicological analysis (STA), analytical methods should have a high identification power. This can be suitably expressed by parameters such as mean list length (MLL) or discriminating power (DP). The reproducibility of a method has a great impact on its identification power, and should be as high as possible.

Ragnar Granit 100 years--memories and reflections.

J Hist Neurosci

December 2000

Department of Medical Physiology, State University of Groningen, The Netherlands.

The Swedish-Finnish Nobel laureate Ragnar Granit, born 100 years ago, is commemorated in a brief article by one of his former PhD students and collaborators. After a short account of Granit's life and scientific career, special attention is given to Granit's role as a teacher in research training and his published thoughts on this matter, partly reflecting Granit's own experience as a "postdoc" in the laboratory of Sherrington (Oxford). The article includes personal recollections of how it was to work together with Granit in his laboratory.

Two capillary electrophoresis (CE) methods were evaluated for their suitability in systematic toxicological analysis (STA). A test set of 25 barbiturates was analysed using capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC). Buffers used consisted of 90 mM borate set at pH 8.

Objective: To study the need for suppression of gastric acid secretion for reliable intragastric partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2) tonometry by evaluating the effect of an oral dose of sodium bicarbonate before and after administration of the H2-blocker ranitidine to mimic CO2 generation following the buffering of acid by bicarbonate in patients after cardiac surgery.

Design: Prospective, open, non-randomized clinical study.

Setting: Cardiothoracic intensive care unit at a university hospital.

The Raman spectroscopic technique enables us to obtain vibrational (IR and far-IR) spectra of minerals by analyzing scattered light caused by (visible or near-visible) monochromatic laser excitation. The method possesses several advantages over IR absorption, including simple sample preparation, easy spectral/band analysis, and linear-response to mineral/chemical concentrations. In micro-Raman spectrometer systems, samples are positioned under an optical microscope, and specimens can be scanned with a lateral resolution (approximately 1 mm).

Purpose: The ideal lens-sparing radiotherapy technique for retinoblastoma calls for 100% dose to the entire retina including the ora serrata and zero dose to the lens. Published techniques, most of which use photons, have not accomplished this ideal treatment. We describe here a technique that approaches this ideal configuration using electron beam therapy.

September 1997

International School of Hepatology and Tropical Medicine GISH-T, Faculty of Medical Science, State University of Groningen, The Netherlands.

Background/aims: A retrospective study of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) was performed to study the Original Mayo Model for predicting survival by a Dutch data-set of patients, presentation of disease progression; assessment of liver transplantation, prediction of post-transplantation survival; and the addition of two laboratory variables to the Original Mayo Model.

Materials And Methods: Survival of 83 patients, 37 of whom underwent transplantation, were studied. Mean follow-up was 6.

In a healthy reference population, hemoglobin (Hgb) and hematocrit (Hct) have been proposed as surrogate markers for whole blood water (WBW). We have extended this study under different physiological and pathological conditions in two longitudinal series, viz. (1) acute hyper- and hypohydration experiments in a healthy individual and (2) three athletes running 5 km each, and in three transverse series, viz.

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an animal model for the human neurological disease multiple sclerosis (MS). Upon immunization with guinea pig spinal cord under a low dose of Cyclosporin A, male Lewis rats develop a severe chronic (relapsing) course of EAE (CR-EAE). By contrast, female Lewis rats develop a more mitigated course of EAE: only half of the female rats develop relapses.

Raman spectra of human dentin mineral.

Eur J Oral Sci

April 1996

Laboratory for Materia Technica, State University of Groningen, The Netherlands.

Human dentin mineral has been investigated by using micro-Raman spectroscopy. Fluorescence and thermal problems were largely avoided by preparing dentin samples by grinding and ultrasonic agitation in acetone. The Raman spectral features were consistent with those of impure hydroxyapatite containing CO3 and HPO4.
