Background: Although the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the prevalence of cases with olfactory loss, other respiratory viruses can also cause this condition. We aimed to compare the prevalence of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection and other respiratory viruses in patients with sudden smell loss, and to assess the impact of SARS-CoV-2 viral load and co-infection on olfactory symptoms.

Methods: Patients with sudden smell loss were recruited in a multicenter prospective cohort study in 15 hospitals in Brazil.

The Interacting Quantum Atoms (IQA) energy decomposition scheme divides the total energy of a molecule into intra- and interatomic contributions. While the former relates to the kinetic and potential energies of electrons inside a unique individual atomic basin, the latter contains the Coulomb and exchange-correlation potentials between electrons from two atomic basins. Considering that the molecular energy is a sum of IQA contributions, the Hessian matrix can also be written as a sum of "IQA Hessian" matrices, whose elements are second derivatives of IQA terms.

Regulation of flowering is a crucial event in the evolutionary history of angiosperms. The production of flowers is regulated through the integration of different environmental and endogenous stimuli, many of which involve the activation of different genes in a hierarchical and complex signaling network. The / () gene family is known to regulate important aspects of flowering in plants.

We aimed to assess the factors associated with frequent sadness and nervousness in Brazilian adolescents, during the Covid-19 pandemic, in 9470 adolescents (aged 12-17 years), interviewed from June 27 to September 17, 2020. Prevalences and prevalence ratios were estimated according to socio-demographic variables and factors related to family, school, friends, and health. Brazilian adolescents often felt sad (32.

Background: As COVID-19 infections worldwide exceed 6 million confirmed cases, the data reveal that the first wave of the outbreak is coming to an end in many European countries. There is variation in the testing strategies (eg, massive testing vs testing only those displaying symptoms) and the strictness of lockdowns imposed by countries around the world. For example, Brazil's mitigation measures lie between the strict lockdowns imposed by many European countries and the more liberal approach taken by Sweden.

Over the years, the possibility of using solar radiation in photocatalysis or photodegradation processes has attracted remarkable interest from scientists around the world. In such processes, due to its electronic properties, AgPO is one of the most important semiconductors. This work delves into the photocatalytic activity, stability, and reactivity of AgPO surfaces by comparing plane waves with projector augmented wave and localized Gaussian basis set simulations, at the atomic level.

The use of antimicrobial monomers, linked to the polymer chain of resin composites, is an interesting approach to circumvent the effects of bacteria on the dental and material surfaces. In addition, it can likely reduce the incidence of recurrent caries lesions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a novel Triclosan Methacrylate (TM) monomer, which was developed and incorporated into an experimental resin composite, on Streptococcus mutans (S.

Nutritional leucine supplementation attenuates cardiac failure in tumour-bearing cachectic animals.

J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle

December 2016

Laboratory of Nutrition and Cancer, Department of Structural and Functional Biology, Institute of Biology State University of Campinas, Campinas 13083-970 São Paulo Brazil.

Background: The condition known as cachexia presents in most patients with malignant tumours, leading to a poor quality of life and premature death. Although the cancer-cachexia state primarily affects skeletal muscle, possible damage in the cardiac muscle remains to be better characterized and elucidated. Leucine, which is a branched chain amino acid, is very useful for preserving lean body mass.

Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels (Myrtaceae) has been traditionally used to treat a number of illnesses. Ethnopharmacological studies have particularly addressed antidiabetic and metabolic-related effects of extracts prepared from its different parts, especially seed, and pulp-fruit, however.

Floral color changes and retention of old flowers are frequently combined phenomena restricted to the floral guide or single flowers in few-flowered inflorescences. They are thought to increase the attractiveness over long distances and to direct nearby pollinators toward the rewarding flowers. In Tibouchina pulchra, a massively flowering tree, the whole flower changes its color during anthesis.

In the autoimmune disease systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), our normal antiviral defenses are inappropriately activated, resulting in over-activity of the type I interferon (IFN) pathway. This increased activity of the type I IFN pathway is an important primary pathogenic factor in the disease. Emerging evidence has implicated the antiviral helicases in this process.

Maize karyotype variability has been extensively investigated. The identification of maize somatic and pachytene chromosomes has improved with the development of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using tandemly repeated DNA sequences as probes. We identified the somatic chromosomes of sister inbred lines that were derived from a tropical flint maize population (Jac Duro [JD]), and hybrids between them, using FISH probes for the 180-bp knob repeat, centromeric satellite (CentC), centromeric satellite 4 (Cent4), subtelomeric clone 4-12-1, 5S ribosomal DNA and nucleolus organizing region DNA sequences.

Background And Objective: Several factors may interfere with the success rate of radioiodine therapy (RIT) in Graves' disease. Our aim was to evaluate, retrospectively, some of these factors in the outcome of RIT.

Methods: Patient gender, age at diagnosis, ophthalmopathy, disease duration, thyroid size, drug used as clinical treatment, thionamide withdrawal period during RIT preparation, FT4, TSH and [99mTc]pertechnetate thyroid uptake prior to RIT were studied as potential interference factors for RIT success.
