Body composition abnormalities are prognostic markers in several types of cancer, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Using our data distribution on body composition assessments and classifications could improve clinical evaluations and support population-specific opportune interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the distribution of body composition from computed tomography and assess the associations with overall survival among patients with CRC.

This study investigated the effect of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) on bone healing around implants placed in elevated sinus cavities. Forty New Zealand albino rabbits were divided into eight groups, based on the time of sacrifice (14 or 40 days) and the material used: blood clot (control), hydroxyapatite (HA) from bovine bone, HA combined with PRF, and PRF alone. Each group consisted of five animals (n = 5).

Wound healing is a complex process involving a sequence of factors that can be disrupted, negatively impacting the quality of life for patients and overburdening healthcare systems. Advanced dressings obtained by electrospinning are highlighted by the optimization of this process, allowing air exchange and protection against microorganisms. Aiming to develop bioactive dressings, this study investigated the physicochemical, mechanical, microbiological, and in vitro biological properties of membranes containing 25 %, 50 %, 75 %, and 90 % copaiba oil (CO) co-electrospun with poly(L-co-D,L-lactic acid) (PLDLA) and natural rubber latex (NR).

Atom-ion hybrid systems are promising platforms for the quantum simulation of polaron physics in certain quantum materials. Here, we investigate the ionic Fermi polaron, a charged impurity in a polarized Fermi bath, at zero temperature using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We compute the energy spectrum, residue, effective mass, and structural properties.

Introduction: The present study aimed to identify the physical demands of Brazilian Air Force (BAF) critical Combat Tasks (CTs) and investigate the occurrence of differences in their difficulty perceived ratings, considering aspects such as sex, military experience, and academic degree of the evaluators.
Methods: The Subject Matter Expert (SME) cohort was assembled based on the BAF's Physical Training Specialists (n = 13, military, at least 2 years of experience). Based on the BAF's previous studies, a questionnaire defining and rating the physical demands of 12 BAF critical CTs was developed.

Background: Elucidating the intricacies of the sugarcane genome is essential for breeding superior cultivars. This economically important crop originates from hybridizations of highly polyploid Saccharum species. However, the large size (10 Gb), high degree of polyploidy, and aneuploidy of the sugarcane genome pose significant challenges to complete genome sequencing, assembly, and annotation.

Introduction: Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines drive optimal patient care and facilitate access to high-quality treatment. Creating guidelines for rare diseases such as haemophilia, where evidence does not often come from randomized controlled trials but from non-randomized and well-designed observational studies and real-world data, is challenging. The methodology used for assessing available evidence should consider this critical fact.

The poor prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) is mainly associated with the highly invasive nature, delayed diagnosis, multidrug-resistant cells, tumor recurrence, and metastasis. Targeted therapies offer a promising means to enhance drug accumulation at the tumor site with the aid of cell-targeting ligands. Herein, chitosan-based multifunctional nanoparticles, conjugated with methotrexate (MTX) by covalent bonds, were designed for targeted delivery of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) to improve CRC therapy.

Background: Fermentation of sugars derived from plant biomass feedstock is crucial for sustainability. Hence, utilizing customized enzymatic cocktails to obtain oligosaccharides instead of monomers is an alternative fermentation strategy to produce prebiotics, cosmetics, and biofuels. This study developed an engineered strain of Aspergillus niger producing a tailored cellulolytic cocktail capable of partially degrading sugarcane straw to yield cellooligosaccharides.

In recent decades, contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in aquatic environments have garnered significant attention due to their adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. Among these CECs, bisphenol A (BPA) is a major concern because of its widespread use and endocrine-disrupting properties. Brazil's urbanization and industrial growth have led to significant pollution challenges, primarily due to inadequate sewage infrastructure and untreated domestic wastewater being discharged into rivers, contributing to the presence of emerging contaminants in surface waters.

Background: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) performed before, during, and after cancer treatment can attenuate the adverse effects induced by anti-cancer drugs. A clear presentation and rationale of characteristics of HIIT variables is vital to produce the expected HIIT adaptations in cancer patients. However, there are concerns regarding the HIIT protocols used in the cancer literature.

Spinal cord injury results in significant motor and sensory loss. In the experimental ventral root avulsion (VRA) model, the ventral (motor) roots are disconnected from the spinal cord surface, disrupting contact between spinal motoneurons and muscle fibers. Axotomized motoneurons typically degenerate within two to three weeks after avulsion, the situation being exacerbated by an increased glial response and chronic inflammation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical effect of ovariectomy, diet, and tooth extraction on the bone structure of the mandible of Wistar rats. Mandibles from 40 female Wistar rats were used, divided into rats with ovariectomy surgery or surgical simulation. Half of the rats had the right upper incisor extracted and a soft diet was introduced for half of the animals for 30 days.

GH10 xylanases and GH62 Arabinofuranosidases play key roles in the breakdown of arabinoxylans and are important tools in various industrial and biotechnological processes, such as renewable biofuel production, the paper industry, and the production of short-chain xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from plant biomass. However, the use of these enzymes in industrial settings is often limited due to their relatively low thermostability and reduced catalytic efficiency. To overcome these limitations, strategies based on enzymatic chimera construction and the use of metal ions and other cofactors have been proposed to produce new recombinant enzymes with improved catalytic activity and thermostability.

Preeclampsia, a pregnancy-specific syndrome, poses substantial risks to maternal and neonatal health, particularly in cases with severe features. Our study focuses on evaluating the impact of low molecular weight metabolites on the intricate mechanisms and pathways involved in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia when severe features are present. We aim to pinpoint the distinct metabolomic profile in maternal plasma during pregnancies affected by hypertensive disorders and to correlate the metabolite levels with the clinical characteristics of the study cohort.

This narrative review explores texture analysis as a valuable technique in dentomaxillofacial diagnosis, providing an advanced method for quantification and characterization of different image modalities. The traditional imaging techniques rely primarily on visual assessment, which may overlook subtle variations in tissue structure. In contrast, texture analysis uses sophisticated algorithms to extract quantitative information from imaging data, thus offering deeper insights into the spatial distribution and relationships of pixel intensities.

The epidemic of obesity has increased worldwide and is associated with comorbidities such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In this context, strategies that modulate body weight and improve glycemic metabolism have increased, and bariatric surgeries such as Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) have been highlighted in obesity treatment. However, the mechanism by which SG reduces body weight and improves glycemic control remains unknown.
