Two parallel imaging methods used for first-pass myocardial perfusion imaging were compared in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and image artifacts. One used adaptive Time-adaptive SENSitivity Encoding (TSENSE) and the other used GeneRalized Autocalibrating Partially Parallel Acquisition (GRAPPA), which are both applied to a gradient-echo sequence. Both methods were tested on 12 patients with coronary artery disease.

A magnetic resonance sequence for high-resolution imaging of coronary arteries in a very short acquisition time is presented. The technique is based on fast low-angle shot and uses fat saturation and magnetization transfer contrast prepulses to improve image contrast. GeneRalized Autocalibrating Partially Parallel Acquisitions (GRAPPA) is implemented to shorten acquisition time.

Together with drug metabolising enzymes, transmembrane transporters are important determinants of drug metabolism and drug clearance by the liver. Hepatic uptake of organic anions, cations, prostaglandins and bile salts is supported by dedicated transporter proteins in the basolateral (sinusoidal) membrane of hepatocytes: OATPs, OATs, OCTs, PGTs and NTCP, respectively. ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter proteins in the canalicular membrane of hepatocytes mediate the hepatic efflux of drugs, bile salts and metabolites against a steep concentration gradient from liver to bile.

Background: The international summer school "Oncology for Medical Students" (ISOMS) is a two-week summer program for medical students aiming to increase knowledge of cancer care in general health practice, to reduce fear related to contacts with patients with malignant disease, and to expose them to cancer-related problems in other countries. This study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of the program on cancer-related knowledge and attitudes of the participants.
Method: The 39 students enrolled in the fifth ISOMS in July 2000 were assessed using precourse and postcourse tests.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity is increased in the DD genotype, but the functional significance for renal function is unknown. Blunted responses of BP and proteinuria to ACE inhibition among DD renal patients during periods of high sodium intake were reported. It was therefore hypothesized that sodium status affects the phenotype in the ACE I/D polymorphism.

Eye movements provide a behavioural measure of sensorimotor processing and higher cognitive functions of the brain. With the development of novel paradigms that can be used for the study of various cognitive operations, saccadic eye movements in particular, have become increasingly popular. Patients with schizophrenia have neurocognitive impairments that can be readily investigated with these paradigms.

Thirty patients with early and continuously treated phenylketonuria (PKU) between 8 and 20 years of age were compared with 30 controls, matched individually for age, sex, and educational level of both parents, on behaviour rating scales for parents and teachers as well as a school achievement scale. PKU patients, as a group, demonstrated more problems in task-oriented behaviour and average academic performance than did matched controls. Interestingly, whereas male PKU patients were rated significantly lower on introversion by their teachers, female patients were rated significantly higher on introversion and lower on extraversion than matched controls.

Background: Because renal function is affected by chronic heart failure (CHF) and it relates to both cardiovascular and hemodynamic properties, it should have additional prognostic value. We studied whether renal function is a predictor for mortality in advanced CHF, and we assessed its relative contribution compared with other established risk factors. In addition, we studied the relation between renal function and neurohormonal activation.

Michelangelo has painted the fresco 'Creation of Adam' for the Sistine Chapel. Recently it was discovered that he had an outline of the brain concealed in Gods cloud. As a renaissance artist he was not supposed to believe that the brain is the seat of the soul.

In many countries, prescription data are used as an instrument to provide feedback on prescribing. This article describes the development and implementation of a computer program as a tool for pharmacotherapy audit meetings and it illustrates the possibilities of such a program. The program was developed to support the optimisation of prescribing in the various stages of behavioural change.

Background/aims: One of the prognostic methods for survival in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is the Mayo model, with a time-scale limited to 7 years. The aim of our study was to assess how major clinical events, signs, several severity assessment methods and Mayo survival probabilities fit in with actual patient survival, by using yearly observations until 0.5 years before patient death from PBC.

In October 1995, a "pill scare" developed in Europe. In the Netherlands, the recommendations given were 1) to not alarm women without risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and 2) to be reserved in prescribing third generation oral contraceptives (OC) for young women who were beginning OC use. To determine whether there is a change in the prescription of third generation OC after the latest pill scare, prescription data from 1/10/94 to 1/10/96, covering a population of +/- 120,000 persons, were studied with respect to OC use before and after the pill scare.

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACEi) inhibition retards renal function loss, but the therapeutic benefit varies between individuals. Renoprotection is poor in patients with the ACE DD genotype. ACE genotype is reported to affect short-term antiproteinuric response to ACEi, a predictor of long-term renoprotection, in some studies but not in others.

Background/aims: The assessment of disease stage in cirrhosis is important for the individual patient (prognosis, timing and risk for requiring surgical intervention) and also for population comparisons and trials. There are several established methods, and we have aimed at comparison of the methods within a large cirrhosis population.
Methodology: In the European Union Euricterus database, there are 1015 patients with a "certain" diagnosis of cirrhosis, each of whom in one session had a protocol work-up of history, physical examination and all laboratory investigations needed for this study.

Background/aims: In the European Union Euricterus Project on (sub)Icterus proforma, the history and physical examination items were to be used for the physician's working diagnosis (PWD) and 'among others, for the development of the real life data electronic diagnostic tool, Trial. Trial delivers diagnosis probabilities based on Bayes' Theorem (B), completed by Trial Algorithm (TA). We wanted to compare the diagnostic accuracies (PWD and Trial probabilities as a percentage of the final diagnosis (FD) in a patient population) in 3 Dutch databases.

Background/aims: Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) is a relatively rare chronic progressive disease in which a working diagnosis of PBC easily leads to a final diagnosis by testing for anti-mitochondrial antibodies. Liver transplantation is the only effective treatment. The aim of this study was to test an electronic diagnostic tool (tool) for it's ability to include PBC in the working differential diagnosis.

Background/aims: Estimation of prognosis becomes increasingly important in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) with advancing disease and also with regard to patient management. The ubiquitous used Pugh scoring for severity of disease is simple while the Mayo model which has been validated for survival estimates is more sophisticated. We wanted to investigate whether Pugh and Mayo scores correlate (they have 3 of 5 variables in common) and if so whether a survival probability based on Mayo data could be affixed on Pugh classes and scores obtained in the same patients.

Proteinuria may be involved in the final common pathway of progressive renal function loss. If so, intervention treatment that reduces proteinuria might prevent or retard long-term renal function loss. In renal patients and in experimental renal disease the severity of proteinuria is associated with the rate of long-term renal function loss.
