The obesity epidemic is considered a global public health crisis, with an increase in caloric intake, sedentary lifestyles and/or genetic predispositions as contributing factors. Although the positive energy balance is one of the most significant causes of obesity, recent research has linked early exposure to Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) such as the obesogen tributyltin (TBT) to the disease epidemic. In addition to their actions on the hormonal profile, EDCs can induce long-term changes in gene expression, possibly due to changes in epigenetic patterns.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for causing Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19), a heterogeneous clinical condition that manifests varying symptom severity according to the demographic profile of the studied population. While many studies have focused on the spread of COVID-19 in large urban centers in Brazil, few have evaluated medium or small cities in the Northeast region. The aims of this study were: (i) to identify risk factors for mortality from SARS-CoV-2 infection, (ii) to evaluate the gene expression patterns of key immune response pathways using nasopharyngeal swabs of COVID-19 patients, and (iii) to identify the circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants in the residents of a medium-sized city in Northeast Brazil.

The objective of the present study was to characterize a herd of 72 ½ Angus × ½ Nellore heifers, identify the resistant, resilient and susceptible animals to parasites, relate the overall DNA methylation of these animals with the degree of parasitism, evaluated by the egg count per gram of feces (EPG), Haematobia irritans count (horn fly) and Rhipicephalus microplus count (bovine tick). The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, containing 72 treatments, with each animal considered a treatment, and 11 repetitions, with each collection within a year considered a repetition. The data obtained from the counts of the evaluated parasites were subjected to statistical analysis using the SISVAR program, to classify heifers according to the degree of parasitism in low (resistant), intermediary (resilient) and high (susceptible) parasite load for infection by nematodes, infestation by ticks and flies.

The early DNA damage induced by ionizing radiation depends on how ionizing particles transfer energy to this molecule and the surrounding medium, mostly water. In preliminary studies, we found that the energy transferred by a 4 keV proton to a cytosine-guanine base pair in a classical simulation collision using the ReaxFF potential is much smaller than that obtained by a quantum calculation using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). We observed that there are two main reasons for that: no accurate force-field for this situation and problems while dealing with the proton charge during the collision.

DRIS (Diagnosis Recommendation Integrated System) is a tool used in the interpretation of leaf analyses that values the balance of nutrients, an important fact for a better assessment of the nutritional status of banana plants. Its usefulness depends on the ability to identify the nutrients that limit productivity in order to correct possible nutritional imbalances, but there is a lack of research in all crops, including bananas, to assess the accuracy of these diagnoses, which have a worrying global implication. To this end, this study evaluates DRIS norms for banana cultivation in Ecuador and the use of accuracy measurements for nutritional diagnosis, verifying the capacity of DRIS to detect true nutritional status based on plant response.

2,4-D and dicamba are used in the postemergence management of eudicotyledonous weeds in different crops, most of which are grown under no-tillage systems. Due to the application methods for these products, their dynamics in straw and their residual action in soil have rarely been explored. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the dynamics of 2,4-D and dicamba that have been applied to corn straw and to verify their relationship with residual control action in weeds.

Hypoxia, a condition of low oxygenation frequently found in triple-negative breast tumors (TNBC), promotes extracellular vesicle (EV) secretion and favors cell invasion, a complex process in which cell morphology is altered, dynamic focal adhesion spots are created, and ECM is remodeled. Here, we investigated the invasive properties triggered by TNBC-derived hypoxic small EV (SEVh) in vitro in cells cultured under hypoxic (1% O) and normoxic (20% O) conditions, using phenotypical and proteomic approaches. SEVh characterization demonstrated increased protein abundance and diversity over normoxic SEV (SEVn), with enrichment in pro-invasive pathways.
