Bioinsecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Berliner, 1915 are widely used to control lepidopteran in several crops. However, surviving insects exposed to the sub-lethal concentration of Bt-based bioinsecticides can suffer a multitude of effects on the biological conditioning known as hormesis. Here, we aimed to provide a clearer understanding of the biological conditioning of Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner, 1818), exposed to different concentrations of a Bt-based bioinsecticide, by assessing life table parameters over three generations.

Ischemic stroke can be classified into five etiological types, according to the Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) classification, and its adequate investigation and characterization can aid in its clinical management and in preventing new events. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) plays a key role in investigating its etiology; approximately one-third of the patients remain without an adequate definition of the etiology or are classified as the undetermined TOAST type. To evaluate if the percentage of patients with indeterminate etiology according to the TOAST classification decreased after transthoracic echocardiography, to determine whether or not the prognosis after ischemic stroke is worse among patients classified as the undetermined TOAST type, and to verify the predictive capacity of echocardiography on the prognosis after ischemic stroke.

KIN is a DNA/RNA-binding protein conserved evolutionarily from yeast to humans and expressed ubiquitously in mammals. It is an essential nuclear protein involved in numerous cellular processes, such as DNA replication, class-switch recombination, cell cycle regulation, and response to UV or ionizing radiation-induced DNA damage. The C-terminal region of the human KIN (hKIN) protein is composed of an SH3-like tandem domain, which is crucial for the anti-proliferation effect of the full-length protein.

Knowledge about how the COVID-19 pandemic can affect aquatic wildlife is still extremely limited, and no effect of SARS-CoV-2 or its structural constituents on invertebrate models has been reported so far. Thus, we investigated the presence of the 2019-new coronavirus in different urban wastewater samples and, later, evaluated the behavioral and biochemical effects of the exposure of Culex quinquefasciatus larvae to two SARS-CoV-2 spike protein peptides (PSPD-2002 and PSPD-2003) synthesized in our laboratory. Initially, our results show the contamination of wastewater by the new coronavirus, via RT-qPCR on the viral N1 gene.

In this review, we briefly describe a theoretical discussion of protein folding, presenting the relative contribution of the hydrophobic effect versus the stabilization of proteins direct surface forces that sometimes may be overlooked. We present NMR-based studies showing the stability of proteins lacking a hydrophobic core which in turn present hydrophobic surface clusters, such as plant defensins. Protein dynamics measurements by NMR are the key feature to understand these dynamic surface clusters.

Wounds are conditions largely present in the clinical routine, and even though frequent, their complete resolution can be challenging. Several solutions can aid or stimulate the healing process, and for this reason, this work used a stabilized solution of 4% sodium hypochlorite for the treatment of excisional wounds in mice. This study was carried out in two distinct stages: in the first stage, the optimal concentration of the chlorinated solution was determined by using the sponge implantation technique in mouse subcutaneous tissue to evaluate the dose-response curve; and in the second phase, this concentration was tested in an experimental model of excisional skin wounds in mice.

During their life cycle, parasites display a fine-tuned regulation of the mRNA translation through the differential expression of isoforms of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (LeishIF4Es). The interaction between allosteric modulators such as 4E-interacting proteins (4E-IPs) and LeishIF4E affects the affinity of this initiation factor for the mRNA cap. Here, several computational approaches were employed to elucidate the molecular bases of the previously-reported allosteric modulation in exerted by 4E-IP1 (Lm4E-IP1) on eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E 1 (LmIF4E-1).
