Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion on short-term mortality in patients undergoing transapical transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TA-TAVI), where bleeding is common.
  • Out of 11,265 TAVI participants, 548 had TA-TAVI, with 209 receiving RBC transfusions, and the study found a significant association between transfusion and increased 30-day mortality.
  • The research concluded that RBC transfusion independently predicts higher short-term mortality in TA-TAVI patients, regardless of other factors like major bleeding and kidney injury.

Loss of Calpain 3 dysregulates store-operated calcium entry and its exercise response in mice.

FASEB J

July 2024

Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, College of Health and Human Performance, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy R1/2A (LGMD R1/2A) is linked to mutations in the CAPN3 gene, which encodes Calpain 3, a protease critical for muscle function and calcium regulation.
  • Research using both Capn3 deficient (C3KO) and wild-type (WT) mice revealed that the absence of Calpain 3 resulted in increased resting calcium levels and altered Store-Operated Calcium Entry (SOCE) activity.
  • After exercise, C3KO mice demonstrated reduced muscle force and impaired calcium dynamics, highlighting that the dysregulation of SOCE due to the loss of Calpain 3 contributes significantly to LGMD R1/2

Transcriptomic and proteomic profiling of bi-partite and tri-partite murine iPSC-derived neurospheroids under steady-state and inflammatory condition.

Brain Behav Immun

October 2024

Laboratory of Experimental Hematology, Vaccine and Infectious Disease Institute (Vaxinfectio), University of Antwerp, 2610 Wilrijk, Belgium. Electronic address:

induced-pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurospheroid (NSPH) models are an emerging in vitro toolkit to study the influence of inflammatory triggers on neurodegeneration and repair in a 3D neural environment. In contrast to their human counterpart, the absence of murine iPSC-derived NSPHs for profound characterisation and validation studies is a major experimental research gap, even though they offer the only possibility to truly compare or validate in vitro NSPH responses with in vivo brain responses. To contribute to these developments, we here describe the generation and characterisation of 5-week-old CXCR1 CCR2 murine (m)iPSC-derived bi-partite (neurons + astrocytes) and tri-partite (neurons + astrocytes + microglia) NSPH models that can be subjected to cellular activation following pro-inflammatory stimulation.

Article Synopsis
  • The End-Triassic Extinction (~200 million years ago) was marked by a series of significant biotic extinctions and disruptions in the global carbon cycle, likely triggered by intense volcanic activity.
  • As volcanic eruptions increased CO levels in the atmosphere and oceans, this led to global warming and accelerated chemical weathering, resulting in more nutrients being released into the oceans, boosting biological productivity.
  • However, this productivity shift caused a decrease in oxygen levels in marine waters, resulting in dysoxia/anoxia and contributing to widespread extinctions in various fossil groups like bivalves, ammonoids, and radiolarians.

The central nervous system (CNS) is constantly surveilled by microglia, highly motile and dynamic cells deputed to act as the first line of immune defense in the brain and spinal cord. Alterations in the homeostasis of the CNS are detected by microglia that respond by extending their processes or - following major injuries - by migrating toward the affected area. Understanding the mechanisms controlling directed cell migration of microglia is crucial to dissect their responses to neuroinflammation and injury.

Cytokines assets in PLWH in two-drug dolutergravir based or three-drug antiretroviral regimen.

BMC Infect Dis

July 2024

Clinic of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine and Science of Aging, University "G. d'Annunzio", Via dei Vestini, Chieti, 66100, Italy.

To minimize the toxicity and impact of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) on the lifestyle of people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (PLWH), scientific community evaluated the efficacy, safety and sustained virologic response of two drugs antiretroviral regimens, in particular dolutegravir (DTG). The effects of deintensification therapy on inflammatory settings are currently unknown in PLWH. Thus, our study explored the inflammatory state in virologically suppressed HIV individuals between patients in treatment with a DTG-containing dual therapy (2DR) versus triple regimen therapies (3DR).

The widespread use of novel psychoactive substances (NPSs)-defined as new narcotic or psychotropic agents not classified under the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961 or the Convention on Psychotropic Substances of 1971-poses a significant challenge to contemporary mental health paradigms due to their impact on psychiatric disorders. This study revisits and expands upon the theory of mental automatism as proposed by Gaëtan Gatian de Clérambault, aiming to elucidate the psychopathological mechanisms underlying substance-induced psychoses (SIP) and their distinction from non-induced psychoses (schizophrenia and related disorders). Through a phenomenological and clinical investigation, we explore the relevance of mental automatism in the development of toxic psychoses, drawing upon the historical and contemporary literature.

Background And Objectives: Plasma β-amyloid-1-42/1-40 (Aβ42/40), phosphorylated-tau (P-tau), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and neurofilament light (NfL) have been widely examined in Alzheimer disease (AD), but little is known about their reflection of copathologies, clinical importance, and predictive value in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We aimed to evaluate associations of these biomarkers with CSF amyloid, cognition, and core features in DLB.

Methods: This cross-sectional multicenter cohort study with prospective component included individuals with DLB, AD, and healthy controls (HCs), recruited from 2002 to 2020 with an annual follow-up of up to 5 years, from the European-Dementia With Lewy Bodies consortium.

Bacterial plant diseases are difficult to control as the durability of deployed control measures is thwarted by continuous and rapid changing of bacterial populations. Although application of copper compounds to plants is the most widespread and inexpensive control measure, it is often partially efficacious for the frequent appearance of copper-resistant bacterial strains and it is raising concerns for the harmful effects of copper on environment and human health. Consequently, European Community included copper compounds in the list of substances candidates for substitution.
