DNA sequence-specific fluorescent dimeric bisbenzimidazoles DBP(n) and DBPA(n), noncovalently interacting with A-T pairs in the minor groove of double-stranded DNA were used for studying and monitoring the expression of histone-like H-NS-dependent promoters. Histone-like H-NS selectively binds to AT-rich segments of DNA and silences a large number of genes in bacterial chromosomes. The H-NS-dependent promoters of Quorum Sensing (QS)-regulated lux operons of the marine bacteria mesophilic Aliivibrio fischeri, psychrophilic Aliivibrio logei were used.

In recent years, bio-based production of free fatty acids from renewable resources has attracted attention for their potential as precursors for the production of biofuels and biochemicals. The antirestriction proteins ArdA ColIb-P9, Arn T4 and Ocr T7 specifically inhibit type I and type IV restriction enzymes and belong to the family of DNA-mimic proteins because their three-dimensional structure is similar to the double-helical B-form DNA. It is proposed that the DNA-mimic proteins are able to bind nucleoid protein H-NS and alleviate H-NS-silencing of the transcription of bacterial genes. Escherichia coli lux biosensors were constructed by inserting H-NS-dependent promoters into a vector, thereby placing each fragment upstream of the promoterless Photorhabdus luminescens luxCDABE operon.

The mechanisms triggering most of autoimmune diseases are still obscure. Autoreactive B cells play a crucial role in the development of such pathologies and, in particular, production of autoantibodies of different specificities. The combination of deep-sequencing technology with functional studies of antibodies selected from highly representative immunoglobulin combinatorial libraries may provide unique information on specific features in the repertoires of autoreactive B cells.

The article deals with experimental determination of ionization constants and solubility for the compounds (target products, initial β-lactams, acylating agents and by-products) involved in enzymatic synthesis of some therapeutically used aminopenicillins and aminocephalosporins, namely ampicillin, amoxicillin, cephalexin, cephadroxil, cephaloglycin, cefaclor, cefprozil, cefatrizine. Methodology of investigations and the evaluation of experimental data for the determination of ionization constants and solubility of the different type electrolytes are presented. Applications of the methods based on acid-base potentiometric titration and on determination of solubility-pH dependence of assayed substances are discussed.

Here we provide a molecular description of a new psychrophilic strain, KCh11, of marine luminescent bacteria classified as Aliivibrio logei. We sequenced the entire lux operon of A. logei KCh1 and showed that it is substantially similar to the lux operon of Aliivibrio salmonicida.

The hexuronate metabolism in Escherichia coli is regulated by two related transcription factors from the FadR subfamily of the GntR family, UxuR and ExuR. UxuR controls the d-glucuronate metabolism, while ExuR represses genes involved in the metabolism of all hexuronates. We use a comparative genomics approach to reconstruct the hexuronate metabolic pathways and transcriptional regulons in gammaproteobacteria.

According to DNA hybridization data, thermophilic streptococci used in Russia as starters in the dairy industry are divided into 6 different genomovars, with a degree of DNA homology not exceeding 20-50%. The analysis of genomes from these genomovars using SmaI restriction endonuclease and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed a wide variability of the genome size. In some strains, the genome size considerably exceeded 2000 kbp.
