Background: Enumeration of residual DNA repair foci 24 hours or more after exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) is often used to assess the efficiency of DNA double-strand break repair. However, the relationship between the number of residual foci in irradiated cells and the radiation dose is still poorly understood. The aim of this work was to investigate the dose responses for residual DNA repair foci in normal human fibroblasts after X-ray exposure in the absorbed dose range from 0.

Heterologous protein expression often faces significant challenges, particularly when the target protein has posttranslational modifications, is toxic, or is prone to misfolding. These issues can result in low expression levels, aggregation, or even cell death. Such problems are exemplified by the expression of phospholipase p37, a critical target for chemotherapeutic drugs against pathogenic human orthopoxviruses, including monkeypox and smallpox viruses.

Hibernation is accompanied by dramatic decrease of blood flow in many organs due to the increase of their vascular resistances. We compared the responses of mesenteric, renal, and cerebral proximal resistance arteries in summer active (SA) and winter hibernating (WH) ground squirrels and studied the signaling pathways of Rho-kinase and NO. Wire myography and Western blotting were used to assess the arterial responses and protein abundances.

Hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) approach has become a valuable analytical complement to traditional methods. HDX-MS allows the identification of dynamic surfaces in proteins. We have shown that the introduction of various mutations into the amino acid sequence of whale apomyoglobin (apoMb) leads to a change in the number of exchangeable hydrogen atoms, which is associated with a change in its compactness in the native-like condition.

Radiotherapy (RT) has been shown to be a cornerstone of both palliative and curative tumor care. RT has generally been reported to be sharply limited by ionizing radiation (IR)-induced toxicity, thereby constraining the control effect of RT on tumor growth. FLASH-RT is the delivery of ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) several orders of magnitude higher than what is presently used in conventional RT (CONV-RT).

Soil monitoring requires accurate and spatially explicit information on soil organic carbon (SOC) trends and changes over time. Spatiotemporal SOC models based on Earth Observation (EO) satellite data can support large-scale SOC monitoring but often lack sufficient temporal validation based on long-term soil data. In this study, we used repeated SOC samples from 1986 to 2022 and a time series of multispectral bare soil observations (Landsat and Sentinel-2) to model high-resolution cropland SOC trends for almost four decades.

The study investigates the economics of sensor-assisted dairy health management and indicates a certain economic potential in the use of a commercial rumen bolus capable of tracking activity and core body temperature. The economic evaluation was performed applying a stochastic model with the net return (NR) of investment of the sensor system as the target variable. The calculated NR considers the gross margin (GM) for both sensor-assisted and visual health monitoring, time savings through sensor-assisted monitoring, additional time spent addressing false positive messages from the sensor system, labor costs, and all costs associated with the investment in the sensor system.

Azoloazine derivatives are known as promising small molecules that are potentially able to counteract a broad spectrum of RNA viruses including SARS-CoV-2. However, a pool of synthetic pathways to provide convenient structural modification of such compounds without de novo construction of the heterocyclic scaffold is rather limited so far. This work proposes an approach to the direct C(sp)-H functionalization of azolopyrimidine substrates with aromatic thiol residues, mediated by the iodine/persulfate reagent system.

In this contribution, the divergent modular synthesis of photoredox-active dyads, triads and a tetrad descending from one ligand precursor is presented by combining "chemistry-on-the-ligand", stepwise complexation and "chemistry-on-the-complex" with minimal synthetic efforts. In the final step, Pd-mediated borylation and subsequent Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling was employed to introduce the different (multi)donor moieties at the preassembled P-A dyad subunit. The (spectro-)electrochemical data revealed preserved redox properties of the subunits and minimal driving force for oxidative quenching by the naphthalene diimide-based (NDI) acceptor and, thus, high-energy charge separated (CS) states.
