Ukraine faced significant fluctuations in COVID-19 morbidity and mortality, alongside an escalating HIV epidemic. This mixed-methods study, conducted between February and August 2022, employed a sequential explanatory design combining a quantitative analysis of national data and qualitative interviews to investigate the pandemic's effects on HIV services in Ukraine. The observed trends confirmed that the pandemic significantly disrupted facility-based HIV testing due to logistical challenges, an increased burden on healthcare workers, and supply shortages.

Background: In 2020, WHO guidelines prioritised the use of a standard fully oral short treatment regimen (STR) consisting of bedaquiline, levofloxacin or moxifloxacin, ethionamide, ethambutol, high-dose isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and clofazimine for the management of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis. A high prevalence of resistance to constituent drugs precluded its widespread use by countries in the WHO European region. We evaluated three 9-month fully oral modified STRs (mSTRs) in which ethionamide, ethambutol, isoniazid, and pyrazinamide were replaced by linezolid, cycloserine, or delamanid (or a combination).

Background: Enabling, supporting and promoting positive health-related behaviours is critical in addressing the major public health challenges of our time, and the multifaceted nature of behaviours requires an evidence-based approach. This statement seeks to suggest how a much-needed enhanced use of behavioural and cultural science and insights for health could be advanced.

The collapse of the Soviet Union triggered an escalation of the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic in many post-Soviet countries, including Ukraine. The main reasons for this situation include both the approach to TB care and the concentration of TB cases in prisons. The neoliberal approach to TB care system reform promises the optimization of treatment terms, "dehospitalization" and "despecialization" of the system of care, and a different type of control, established through digital technologies.

Patients receiving medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) depend on receiving daily treatment and face a risk of withdrawal in case of medication supply disruption. MOUD are banned in Russia, making treatment continuation impossible in temporarily occupied areas.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has displaced more than a quarter of the population. Assessing disease burdens among displaced people is instrumental in informing global public health and humanitarian aid efforts. We estimated the disease burden in Ukrainians displaced both within Ukraine and to other countries by combining a spatiotemporal model of forcible displacement with age- and gender-specific estimates of cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, cancer, HIV, and tuberculosis (TB) in each of Ukraine's 629 raions (i.

The ornate dog tick (Dermacentor reticulatus) shows a recently expanding geographic distribution. Knowledge on its intraspecific variability, population structure, rate of genetic diversity and divergence, including its evolution and geographic distribution, is crucial to understand its dispersal capacity. All such information would help to evaluate the potential risk of future spread of associated pathogens of medical and veterinary concern.

Background: Achievement of the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets requires ARV regimens that are easy to use, well-tolerated, and cost-effective. Dolutegravir (DTG)-based regimens are efficacious and less costly than other common first-line regimens. This study assessed real-world effectiveness of DTG regimens in treatment-naive people living with HIV in Ukraine.

Objectives: To evaluate the access to comprehensive diagnostics and novel antituberculosis medicines in European countries.
Methods: We investigated the access to genotypic and phenotypic Mycobacterium tuberculosis drug susceptibility testing and the availability of antituberculosis drugs and calculated the cost of drugs and treatment regimens at major tuberculosis treatment centres in countries of the WHO European region where rates of drug-resistant tuberculosis are the highest among all WHO regions. Results were stratified by middle-income and high-income countries.

In Europe, two species of hantaviruses, (PUUV) and (DOBV), cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in humans. The rodent reservoirs for these viruses are common throughout Ukraine, and hence, the goal of this study was to identify the species and strains of hantaviruses circulating in this region. We conducted surveillance of small rodent populations in a rural region in northwestern Ukraine approximately 30 km from Poland.

Rodent-borne hantaviruses have been reported in many of the countries surrounding Ukraine; however, to date we have no knowledge of the viral strains circulating in Ukraine within reservoirs such as the striped field mouse (), the yellow-necked field mouse (), and the bank vole (). To determine the prevalence of hantaviruses in Ukraine, we captured 1,261 mammals, of which 1,109 were rodents, in 58 field sites within the province of Volyn in western Ukraine. Foci of the striped field mouse tended to occur in the eastern and southern parts of the province, whereas the bank vole were clustered in western and northern regions.

Background: Ukraine's injecting drug use-driven HIV epidemic is among the most severe in Europe with high burden of HCV co-infection. HIV/HCV co-infected individuals are at elevated risk of HCV-related morbidity, but little is known about burden of liver disease and associated factors in the HIV-positive population in Ukraine, particularly among women.
Methods: Characteristics of 2050 HIV-positive women enrolled into the Ukrainian Study of HIV-infected Childbearing Women were described by HCV serostatus.
