Dementia is frequent in nursing home (NH), affecting between 40 and 50 % of the residents and is associated in 90 % of the cases with behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD) which are detrimental to caregivers' working life and perceived health. We compared perceived health and working life between NHs that used or did not use nighttime personalized non-pharmacological therapies (PNPT) to address BPSD. This anonymous survey included 96 caregivers from 25 NHs which used (n = 69) or not (n = 27) nighttime PNPT.

Modifying the galenic of dry oral forms (DOF) to be administered to patients with swallowing or behavioral disorders is frequent in long term care homes. The objective was to investigate the practice of modifying DOF galenic by nurses in home settings (NHS). A 14-question electronic survey was distributed to 1977 NHS.

A pragmatic trial testing a tailored non pharmacologic therapies on nocturnal behavioral and psychological symptoms associated with dementia.

We compared the efficacy of tailored non pharmacological therapies (NPT) on specific nocturnal behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). This retrospective 1-year study included 84 older dependent patients institutionalized in 7 long-term care home. Dedicated assistants, who were taught by experts how to use NPT, were asked to record the occurrence of each BPSD episode, to choose a given NPT on the basis of their knowledge of the patient and the type of BPSD and to estimate its efficacy.

Previous in-home physiotherapy prevents institutionalization after short-term hospitalization in community-dwelling older dependent people.

Aims: Short-term hospitalization of community-dwelling older dependent people in a geriatric acute care unit is sometimes needed to treat an acute health problem. Serious loss of independence can lead to difficulties in maintaining home care and is followed, at hospital discharge, to institutionalization in a long-term care home. We investigated the variables, particularly those related to the paramedical staff at home, predicting a return home or an institutionalization at hospital discharge.

Predicting Chemotherapy Toxicity and Death in Older Adults with Colon Cancer: Results of MOST Study.

Purpose: Older patients with colon cancer (CC) are vulnerable to chemotherapy toxicity and death. Establishing simple scores specific for patients with CC to predict severe chemotoxicity or early death is needed to select the best treatment strategy.

Subjects, Materials, And Methods: This prospective multicenter study included patients aged ≥70 years with CC receiving adjuvant or first-line metastatic chemotherapy.

Factors associated with social deprivation among older persons living with HIV.

Aging persons living with HIV may develop multiple health problems, including comorbidities, and altered physical and mental health, earlier than non-infected people. They may also experience social deprivation. We assessed the prevalence of social deprivation and its relationship with health indicators in older persons living with HIV.

Impact of Environmental Modifications to Enhance Day-Night Orientation on Behavior of Nursing Home Residents With Dementia.

Objectives: To determine whether environmental rearrangements of the long-term care nursing home can affect disruptive behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in residents with dementia.

Design: Prospective 6-month study.

Setting: The study was conducted before (phase 1) and after (phase 2) environmental rearrangements [skylike ceiling tiles in part of the shared premises, progressive decrease of the illuminance at night together with soothing streaming music, reinforcement of the illuminance during the day, walls painted in light beige, oversized clocks in corridors, and night team clothes color (dark blue) different from that of the day team (sky blue)].

Aim: to investigate the duodenal motility on the basis of radiological studies.

Patients And Methods: We tested our hypothesis that sphincters of Kapandji and Ochsner are contracted in response to stimulation of duodenum by hydrochloric acid. These sphincters are not found in standard X-ray studies because barium does not contain hydrochloric acid when it coming from the stomach into the duodenum.
