NYU Pain Research Center, Department of Molecular Pathobiology, College of Dentistry, New York University, New York, New York; Department of Cell Biology, NYU Grossman School of Medicine; New York, New York; Department of Pediatrics, NYU Grossman School of Medicine; New York, New York. Electronic address:

Background & Aims: Mood disorders and disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are highly prevalent, commonly comorbid, and lack fully effective therapies. Although selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are first-line pharmacological treatments for these disorders, they may impart adverse effects, including anxiety, anhedonia, dysmotility, and, in children exposed in utero, an increased risk of cognitive, mood, and gastrointestinal disorders. SSRIs act systemically to block the serotonin reuptake transporter and enhance serotonergic signaling in the brain, intestinal epithelium, and enteric neurons.

Daphnia are keystone species of freshwater habitats used as model organisms in ecology and evolutionary biology. Their small size, wide geographic distribution, and sensitivity to chemicals make them useful as environmental sentinels in regulatory toxicology and chemical risk assessment. Biomolecular (-omic) assessments of responses to chemical toxicity, which reveal detailed molecular signatures, become more powerful when correlated with other phenotypic outcomes (such as behavioral, physiological, or histopathological) for comparative validation and regulatory relevance.

Rising child welfare costs and a desire to keep kids out of the system have encouraged the use of kinship care-of which custodial grandparents make up the majority of caregivers. Unfortunately, custodial grandparents report greater needs for social and emotional support to successfully care for their grandchildren. Yet, the resources required to provide preventive social-emotional support to these families are unknown.

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), an autosomal recessive ciliopathy with pleiotropic effects, manifests as a spectrum of anomalies involving multiple genes and affects fewer than 3,000 individuals in the USA. Due to its rarity and phenotypic variability, early diagnosis of BBS poses a significant challenge. Therefore, we aim to shed light on the intrafamilial phenotypic variation of BBS resulting from a variant by delineating the clinical presentation in two siblings.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are promoted as commercial bioinoculants for sustainable agriculture. Little is known, however, about the survival of AMF inoculants in soil and their impacts on native or pre-established AMF communities in root tissue. The current study was designed to assess the stability of pre-existing/nursery-derived AMF in apple rootstocks after being planted into soil containing a known community of AMF with a limited number of species.

Leptomeningeal metastatic disease (LMD), encompassing entities of 'meningeal carcinomatosis', neoplastic meningitis' and 'leukaemic/lymphomatous meningitis', arises secondary to the metastatic dissemination of cancer cells from extracranial and certain intracranial malignancies into the leptomeninges and cerebrospinal fluid. The clinical burden of LMD has been increasing secondary to more sensitive diagnostics, aggressive local therapies for discrete brain metastases, and improved management of extracranial disease with targeted and immunotherapeutic agents, resulting in improved survival. However, owing to drug delivery challenges and the unique microenvironment of LMD, novel therapies against systemic disease have not yet translated into improved outcomes for these patients.

Aquatic pathogens often cannot tolerate drying, and thus their spread, and diversity across a landscape may depend on interactions between hydrological conditions and the movement of infected hosts. The aquatic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is a nearly ubiquitous pathogen of amphibians and particular lineages have been associated with host declines. By coupling amphibian surveys with molecular pathogen detection and genotyping techniques, we characterized the spatial dynamics and genetic diversity of Bd on a landscape containing both permanent and ephemeral ponds.

Unlabelled: The SPFH (stomatin, prohibitin, flotillin, and HflK/HflC) protein superfamily is conserved across all domains of life. Fungal SPFH proteins are required for respiration, stress adaptation, and membrane scaffolding. In the yeast , stomatin-like protein 3 (Slp3) forms punctate foci at the plasma membrane, and overexpression causes cell death following exposure to the surfactant, SDS, and the oxidative stressor, HO.

Inflammation and microglia appear to be key factors influencing the outcome of retinal regeneration following acute retinal damage. Despite such findings, direct connection of microglia-specific inflammatory factors as drivers of regenerative responses in the retina are still not defined, and intracellular pathways activated to stimulate such signals from microglia are currently unknown. We became interested in MyD88 regulation in microglia because transcriptomic datasets suggest could be regulated temporally in zebrafish microglia responding to damage in the central nervous system.

Combined telemedicine-first and direct primary care as a promising model of healthcare delivery.

J Telemed Telecare

December 2024

Associate Professor Family and Community Medicine, Penn State College of Medicine, Medical Director Virtual Primary Care, Penn State Health, Hershey, PA, USA.

Telemedicine is comparable in quality to in-person care, adequate for many primary care concerns, acceptable to patients, and can overcome barriers to care. However, patients are reluctant to pay the same for telemedicine as in-person care and uncertainty about future payor reimbursement makes it risky to base a clinical practice primarily on telemedicine. Physical exam-supported information collection and relationship-building are limited in telemedicine, but can be mitigated through remote patient monitoring and ample access to a provider and clinical team.

Human craniofacial shape is highly variable yet highly heritable with numerous genetic variants interacting through multiple layers of development. Here, we hypothesize that Mendelian phenotypes represent the extremes of a phenotypic spectrum and, using achondroplasia as an example, we introduce a syndrome-informed phenotyping approach to identify genomic loci associated with achondroplasia-like facial variation in the general population. We compare three-dimensional facial scans from 43 individuals with achondroplasia and 8246 controls to calculate achondroplasia-like facial scores.
