Background: Advances in four-dimensional flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (4D flow CMR) have allowed quantification of left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) blood flow. We aimed to (1) investigate age and sex differences of 4D flow CMR-derived LV and RV relative flow components and kinetic energy (KE) parameters indexed to end-diastolic volume (KEi) in healthy subjects; and (2) assess the effects of age and sex on these parameters.

Methods: We performed 4D flow analysis in 163 healthy participants (42% female; mean age 43 ± 13 years) of a prospective registry study (NCT03217240) who were free of cardiovascular diseases.

What do we know about why women bleed and what do we not know?

J Thromb Haemost

February 2024

Departments of Medicine and Pathology & Molecular Medicine, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • Women with uteruses can experience both normal menstruation and various forms of abnormal bleeding during their reproductive years.
  • Abnormal bleeding can happen during pregnancy or after childbirth due to issues like miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or problems with the placenta.
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding, defined as blood loss greater than 80 mL per cycle, is often linked to bleeding disorders and is distinct from other reproductive tract bleeding events.

Objective: MYCN oncogene amplification is closely linked to high-grade neuroblastoma with poor prognosis. Accurate quantification is essential for risk assessment, which guides clinical decision making and disease management. This study proposes an end-to-end deep-learning framework for automatic tumor segmentation of pediatric neuroblastomas and radiomics features-based classification of MYCN gene amplification.

Key Laboratory of Quantitative Synthetic Biology, Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenzhen 518055, China. Electronic address:

Macrophages are heterogeneous and play critical roles in development and disease, but their diversity, function, and specification remain inadequately understood during human development. We generated a single-cell RNA sequencing map of the dynamics of human macrophage specification from PCW 4-26 across 19 tissues. We identified a microglia-like population and a proangiogenic population in 15 macrophage subtypes.

Black men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to have the highest incidence of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnoses in the United States but are least likely to be engaged in care or to be virally suppressed. Many Black MSM face multiple stigmas, but some have found refuge in the House Ball Community (HBC)-a national network of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender kinship commitments that provide care-giving, affirmation, and survival skills-building for its members. We propose to modify a skills-building and HIV prevention best-evidence, group-level intervention for HIV- negative Black MSM (Many Men Many Voices) into a family-based intervention to focus on asset-building for both HIV-negative and HIV-positive Black MSM within HBC families.

Background: Cervical cancer the fourth most frequently diagnosed cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer death in women, with an estimated 604,000 new cases and 342,000 deaths worldwide in 2020 for high rates of recurrence and metastasis. Identification of novel targets could aid in the prediction and treatment of cervical cancer. NADPH oxidase 1 (NOX1) gene-mediated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) could induce migration and invasion of cervical cancer cells.

Purpose: One of the most common causes of infertility in adult women is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which has been identified with symptoms such as chronic hyperandrogenism, anovulation, and polycystic ovaries. Adiponectin modulates steroidogenesis and the expression of ovulation-related genes. Herein, we assessed the effect of AdipoRon (adiponectin agonist) in the PCOS model mice.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical trials for COVID-19 therapeutics often measure antiviral activity by assessing changes in nasal SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels, typically using statistical methods like ANCOVA or MMRM.
  • Using single imputation for results below the assay’s lower limits of quantification (LLoQ) can introduce bias in estimating treatment effects.
  • The article underscores best practices for analyzing quantitative viral RNA data, emphasizing the importance of detailing assay specifics, completeness summaries, and considering values below LLoQ as censored measurements.

Immune Status and SARS-CoV-2 Viral Dynamics.

J Infect Dis

August 2023

Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Immunocompromised individuals are disproportionately affected by severe coronavirus disease 2019, but immune compromise is heterogenous, and viral dynamics may vary by the degree of immunosuppression. In this study, we categorized ACTIV-2/A5401 participants based on the extent of immunocompromise into none, mild, moderate, and severe immunocompromise. Moderate/severe immunocompromise was associated with higher nasal viral load at enrollment (adjusted difference in means: 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Namibia face challenges accessing clinic-based HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), leading researchers to evaluate alternative community-based models for service delivery.
  • The study analyzed data from 7593 AGYW aged 15-24, revealing that while a high percentage received PrEP education and HIV testing, only 36.9% initiated PrEP and just 12.4% continued after one month.
  • Key factors influencing PrEP uptake included school dropout and food insecurity, with those delaying PrEP starting showing higher persistence rates, especially those using the community-concierge service model.

Background: A rapid expansion of systemic immunological treatment options for atopic dermatitis (AD) has created a need for clinically relevant and understandable comparative efficacy and safety information for patients and clinicians. Given the scarcity of head-to-head trials, network meta-analysis (NMA) is an alternative way to enable robust comparisons among treatment options; however, NMA results are often complex and difficult to directly implement in shared decision-making.

Objective: The aim of this study is to develop a website that effectively presents the results of a living systematic review and NMA on AD treatments to patient and clinician users.

Background: There is no consensus on the effect of timing and type of smoke exposure on early allergy development. This study aimed to determine the relationship between early eczema or food allergy/hypersensitivity development in children by firstly investigating the effect of smoke exposure across critical development periods and secondly by analyzing effects of parental atcive or passive smoking.

Methods: Four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Embase) were searched in May 2022 and assessed by two independent reviewers.

Interventions with women's groups are increasingly seen as an important strategy for advancing women's empowerment, health, and economic outcomes in low- and middle-income countries, with the potential to increase the resiliency of members and their communities during widespread covariate shocks, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This evidence synthesis compiles evidence from past shocks on women's group activities and the extent to which women's groups mitigate the effects of shocks on members and communities. We reviewed 90 documents from academic databases, organizational reports, and additional gray literature, and included literature diverse in geography, type of women's group, and shock.

Background: The purpose of this study is to describe a patient who experienced simultaneous central retinal vein and cilioretinal artery occlusions, as well as perifoveal hemorrhage in the Henle fiber.

Case Presentation: A 67-year-old Iranian woman presented with a 3-day history of reduced vision in her left eye. Venous tortuosity and retinal hemorrhage were observed in the retina, together with whitened regions around the fovea, consistent with the diagnosis of central retinal vein occlusion in conjunction with cilioretinal artery occlusion.
