Introduction: Minimally invasive surgery total hip arthroplasty (MIS-THA) is becoming increasingly popular. There are several approaches to MIS-THA that vary according to anatomical access to the hip joint. The direct superior (DS) approach is a recent modification of an MIS posterior approach that spares the iliotibial band and most of the short external rotators of the hip, particularly the quadratus femoris.

Background: Considerable practice variability exists among orthopedic surgeons performing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of this study is to understand what TKA surgical and perioperative techniques are standard among high-volume academic knee arthroplasty surgeons.

Methods: A written survey with 59 questions regarding management preferences in TKA was distributed by the 2018 John N.

Postoperative Antibiotic Use Among Patients Undergoing Functional Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

JAMA Facial Plast Surg

December 2019

Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Stanford, California.

Importance: Best practices for antibiotic use after facial plastic and reconstructive procedures have been the subject of much debate, and there is a need for large-scale data to guide further development of evidence-based guidelines for antibiotic use in this setting.

Objective: To assess patterns of postoperative antibiotic prescriptions and infection rates after nasal and oculoplastic procedures.

Design, Setting, And Participants: A retrospective population-based cohort study was conducted using IBM MarketScan Commercial and Medicare Supplemental research databases of 294 039 patients who underwent facial plastic surgery procedures between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2015.

Background: Ankyloglossia is a condition of altered tongue mobility due to the presence of restrictive tissue between the undersurface of the tongue and the floor of mouth. Potential implications of restricted tongue mobility (such as mouth breathing, snoring, dental clenching, and myofascial tension) remain underappreciated due to limited peer-reviewed evidence. Here, we explore the safety and efficacy of lingual frenuloplasty and myofunctional therapy for the treatment of these conditions in a large and diverse cohort of patients with restricted tongue mobility.

Background: Traditional posterior approaches to the hip, posterolateral and mini-posterior, violate the iliotibial band and the short external rotators, specifically the quadratus femoris and obturator externus muscles. The direct anterior approach does not violate the iliotibial band or the quadratus femoris, resulting in earlier ambulation and lower dislocation rates. The direct superior (DS) is a posterior approach that spares the iliotibial band, obturator externus tendon, and quadratus femoris muscle.

1Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Sleep Surgery and Medicine, Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, HI USA.

Background: To systematically review the literature for methods to localize the genial tubercle as a means for performing an advancement of the genioglossus muscle.

Methods: PubMed, Google Scholar, CRISP, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Scopus were searched from inception through June 16, 2015.

Results: One hundred fifty-two articles were screened, and the full text versions of 12 articles were reviewed in their entirety and 7 publications reporting their methodology for localizing the genial tubercle.

Costs and Outcomes with Once-Daily versus Every-6-Hour Intravenous Busulfan in Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation.

Biol Blood Marrow Transplant

January 2020

Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Stanford, California; Department of Medicine, Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Stanford University, Stanford, California.

The high cost of healthcare in the United States has not been consistently associated with improved health outcomes or quality of care, necessitating a focus on value-based care. We identified busulfan dosing frequency during allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) conditioning as a potential target for optimization. To improve patient convenience and to decrease the cost of busulfan-based conditioning regimens, our institution changed busulfan dose frequency from every 6 hours (q6h) to once-daily (q24h).

Background: The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) on mental health.

Methods: A total of 205 patients who underwent primary TKA with baseline and 1-year postoperative Short Form-12 Mental Component Score (MCS) were included in this retrospective analysis. Eighty-five (41%) patients had a preoperative MCS less than 50 points, while 120 (59%) patients had a preoperative MCS over 50 points.

Background: Rib resection in venous thoracic outlet syndrome (vTOS) may be approached via a transaxillary, supraclavicular, or infraclavicular approach based on surgeon preference. The purpose of this study was to evaluate long-term postoperative quality of life function after surgery for vTOS and to determine if there were long-term patency differences associated with the surgical approach or whether prophylactic postoperative venography was performed.

Methods: All patients with vTOS undergoing rib resection at a single institution were retrospectively reviewed.

Patient safety and quality outcomes for ED patients admitted to alternative care area inpatient beds.

Am J Emerg Med

February 2020

Department of Emergency Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, 900 Welch Road, MC 5119, Suite 350, Stanford, CA 94304, United States of America. Electronic address:

Background: Inpatient hallway beds are one solution to mitigate emergency department (ED) crowding due to boarding of admitted patients. Alternative Care Areas (AltCA) beds are located in inpatient hallways, cardiac catheterization lab, and endoscopy. We examined whether AltCA beds were associated with increased risk of patient safety and quality outcomes: transfer to Intensive Care Unit (ICU), mortality, hospital-acquired infections (HAI), falls, and 72-hour hospital readmission.

Impact of Adaptive Sports Participation on Quality of Life.

Sports Med Arthrosc Rev

June 2019

Department of Orthopedics, Stanford Hospital and Clinics, PM&R Division, Stanford, CA.

The health benefits of regular recreational physical activity are well known in reducing secondary health consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in the general population. However, individuals with physical disabilities participate less frequently in recreational activity compared with those without disabilities. Although evidence on the impact of recreational physical activity on quality of life in this population is in its infancy, regular recreational and sports activity participation has shown to have a positive association with improvements in quality of life, life satisfaction, community reintegration, mood, and employment in those with disabilities.

Identifying effective therapies for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) with fibrosis is a pressing challenge, with 1%-2% of the population in developed nations at risk of developing NASH cirrhosis and its complications. The design of NASH clinical therapeutic trials is hampered by the long period of minimally symptomatic disease that typically precedes the development of decompensated cirrhosis and the accompanying uncertainties regarding the best precirrhotic trial endpoints that reliably reflect a subsequent reduction in liver-related morbidity and mortality. The Liver Forum is a multistakeholder organization comprised of academic, industry, and regulatory experts working from a regulatory science perspective to identify barriers, prioritize research, and identify solutions to accelerate therapeutic development for NASH.
