Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a UK-based prediction model for estimating fat-free mass in children and adolescents across 19 countries outside the UK.
  • Involving 5,693 participants aged 4 to 15, the model exhibited strong predictive performance, with R values over 75% in all countries and good calibration of predicted versus actual fat-free mass.
  • The researchers found minimal variation in model performance based on gender, age, ethnicity, or national income, and they adjusted the model for different countries to enhance accuracy for future use.

Background: It is important to exploit all available data on patients in settings such as intensive care burn units (ICBUs), where several variables are recorded over time. It is possible to take advantage of the multivariate patterns that model the evolution of patients to predict their survival. However, pattern discovery algorithms generate a large number of patterns, of which only some are relevant for classification.

Levy Pl, New York, NY 10029, USA; Department of Psychology, Touro College and University System, 320 W 31st St, New York, NY 10001, USA.

Background: Lifestyle factors like time of eating and stress exposure may impact physiology to promote excess weight gain. To understand behavioral and physiological mechanisms underlying these potential effects, we compared appetite and gut hormone responses to a series of meal and stress challenges beginning in the morning and the afternoon, in adults with normal-weight and obesity.

Method: Thirty-two adults (16 with normal-weight, 16 with obesity) underwent the same test protocol on different days, each following an 8 h fast.

Center for Kidney Diseases, Department of Nephrology, The Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China; Division of Research and Development, US Department of Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System, Brooklyn, NY 11209, USA; Department of Cell Biology, State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn, NY 11203, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Emerging evidence suggests heterologous prime-boost COVID-19 vaccination as a superior strategy than homologous schedules. Animal experiments and clinical observations have shown enhanced antibody response against influenza variants after heterologous vaccination; however, whether the inoculation order of COVID-19 vaccines in a prime-boost schedule affects antibody response against SARS-CoV-2 variants is not clear.

Methods: We conducted immunological analyses in a cohort of health care workers (n = 486) recently vaccinated by three types of inactivated COVID-19 vaccines under homologous or heterologous prime-boost schedules.

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is being increasingly used for decompensated severe symptomatic aortic stenosis. Data on urgent and elective TAVR readmission is scarce in the literature. Here, we have performed a retrospective cohort study with the Nationwide Readmission Database of 2016 to identify the rate of 30-day all-cause readmission, common causes of readmission, and distribution of morbidity in index admission and readmission after urgent and elective TAVR.

Background: Urgent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a feasible option for aortic stenosis (AS) patients with decompensated heart failure (HF) and cardiogenic shock (CS) as compared to the more traditional urgent balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV).

Objectives: We conducted a retrospective analysis to compare risk and cause of readmission in these two high-risk groups.

Methods: Nationwide Readmission Database (NRD) 2011-2014 was retrospectively analyzed to identify patients with AS having either urgent TAVI or urgent BAV using appropriate ICD-9 codes.

Clinical evidence of an interferon-glucocorticoid therapeutic synergy in COVID-19.

Signal Transduct Target Ther

March 2021

Department of Nephrology, Center of Nephrology and Urology, Sun Yat-sen University Seventh Hospital, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone is the first trial-proven drug that reduces COVID-19 mortality by suppressing immune system. In contrast, interferons are a crucial component of host antiviral immunity and can be directly suppressed by glucocorticoids. To investigate whether therapeutic interferons can compensate glucocorticoids-induced loss of antiviral immunity, we retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 387 PCR-confirmed COVID-19 patients with quasi-random exposure to interferons and conditional exposure to glucocorticoids.

Hyperuricemia and gout have been linked to an increased risk for cardiovascular (CV) disease, stroke, hypertension, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease, possibly through a proinflammatory milieu. However, not all the drugs used in gout treatment improve CV outcomes; colchicine has shown improved CV outcomes in patients with recent myocardial infarction and stable coronary artery disease independent of lipid-lowering effects. There is resurging interest in colchicine following publication of the COLCOT, LoDoCo, LoDoCo2, LoDoCo-MI trials, and COLCORONA trial which will shed light on its utility in COVID-19.

As the prevalence of asymptomatic COVID-19 continues to increase, there is an increasing possibility that patients with COVID-19 may presen with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). With social distancing and restricted access to preventive healthcare and emergency services, the management of acute cardiac emergencies such as myocardial infarction has suffered collateral damage. Thus far, global trends suggest a decrease in STEMI activations with possible worse outcomes due to delayed presentation and management.
