The formation of metastases in heterotopic ossifications is a very rare finding. The example of a 63-year old male who underwent Billroth II procedure because of recurrent duodenal ulcers 30 years ago and median laparotomy of the upper abdomen because of blunt abdominal trauma 9 years ago shows the formation of metastasis of a carcinoma found in the gastroenteral anastomosis in a focus of heterotopic ossification, which was located in the scar of the upper abdominal laparotomy.

Gallbladder volume and contraction after a fatty meal was determined in 14 patients with gastric cancer before and 3-4 months after gastrectomy (7 total and 7 subtotal gastrectomies) with Roux-en-Y anastomosis. All patients had an increased gallbladder resting volume (p less than 0.001) and 10 of 14 patients (6 after total gastrectomy and 4 after subtotal gastrectomy) had an increased minimal residual volume after fatty meal stimulation (p less than 0.

Results of clinical investigations and CCT of 23 patients with thalamic infarctions were evaluated retrospectively. Nineteen patients underwent a clinical and 15 a neuropsychological examination one to 5 years after their stroke. Regarding the affected vascular territory, the patients were divided into the following subgroups: paramedian infarctions (posterior thalamo-subthalamic arteries, 13 patients, among them 5 bilateral infarcts); anterolateral infarcts (tuberothalamic arteries, 5 patients); posterolateral infarcts (thalamo-geniculate arteries, 5 patients).

Decrease in gall-bladder volume after intake of a test meal was assessed by ultrasound in 30 patients (24 females, 6 males; mean age 55 [22-82] years) with indications for elective or early elective cholecystectomy for cholelithiasis. Patients were assigned to three groups, based on intraoperative and histological gall-bladder changes: group 1 (n = 17), without changes or with mild chronic cholecystitis; group 2 (n = 4), with severe chronic inflammatory changes; group 3 (n = 9), with acute cholecystitis or cystic duct occlusion. A volume decrease of at least 30% after the test meal excluded only acute wall inflammation (negative predictive value 95.

March 1990

Universitäts-Kinderklinik, St. Josef-Hospital Bochum.

70 children without visual, developmental or neurological handicap in the age of 3 to 92 months were investigated. Using red and white light flashes non-target event-related evoked potentials have been registrated, white light serving as rare (20%) stimulus (Fig. 1 and 5).

The generally accepted interpretation that the application of surface and concentric needle electrodes for the recording of evoked muscle action potential in motor nerve neurography showed the same results has been reconsidered, especially because until now, over 20 years after the introduction of this neurophysiological method in routine clinical work, no exact statistically verified examinations have been done on this subject. Proximal and distal latency as well as motor nerve conduction velocity were determined in the following nerves in 100 subjects (71 healthy subjects and 29 patients): tibial, peroneal, ulnar, median. All neurographic parameters were obtained by means of simultaneous recording with surface and concentric needle electrodes and compared with one another.

Clinical, morphological and immunological data in addition to animal studies clearly support the conclusion, that Campylobacter pylori infection is a direct cause (sufficient condition) for chronic type B gastritic in man. C. pylori gastritis is primarily a histologic entity defined by the presence of a gastric mucosal cellular infiltrate and the histologic demonstration of typical curved bacilli.

A simple and efficient therapy eradicating C. pylori with high reliability from gastroduodenal mucosae is presently unknown. In regard to such a "puristic" approach, antibiotics given as monotherapy are presently as ineffective as bismuth salts, which may temporarily reduce the bacterial density, but yield a low complete bacterial eradication rate of not more than 10% to 30% of all patients.

This is a report of a 6-year-old boy with repeated staphylococcus infections especially in the hairy region of the head. Investigating the disease an extremely elevated IgE of 10,000 KU/l was found, specific IgE in RAST only at a low level. The immunologic investigations showed a reduction of the T-suppressor-cells and an increase of IgG levels.

Results of a recently published study over a test period of 18 years showed no relationship between croup incidence of hospitalized children and SO2 levels measured in the city of Bochum. In the following study 642 hospitalized children with stenosing laryngotracheitis were examined for a possible time-dependent relationship between croup incidence and NO2, NO- and dust immission levels measured in the city of Bochum (approx. 1000 000 readings).
