Background: Reimplantations of autologous skull flaps after decompressive hemicraniectomies (DHs) are associated with high rates of postoperative bone flap resorption (BFR). We histologically assessed the cell viability of explanted bone flaps in certain periods of time after DH, in order to conclude whether precursors of BRF may be developed during their storage.

Methods: Skull bone flaps explanted during a DH between 2019 and 2020 were stored in a freezer at either -23 °C or -80 °C.

Dysfunctional high-density lipoprotein in chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

Ther Adv Musculoskelet Dis

August 2023

Medical Department I, University Hospital Marien Hospital Herne, Ruhr-University Bochum, Hölkeskampring 40, Herne 44625, Germany.

Background: The mechanism explaining low cholesterol concentrations in chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease (CIRD) is incompletely understood. We hypothesized that chronic inflammation impairs the functionality of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), for example, by oxidative processes.

Objectives: Assessment of oxidized HDL (HDL), a marker of dysfunctional HDL, in newly diagnosed patients with CIRD before and after initiation of immunosuppressive therapy and comparison of HDL values of patients with CIRD to non-CIRD controls.

Background: Our aim was to determine the best operative procedure in human participants with a displaced or non-displaced femoral neck fracture comparing cannulated screw (CS) fixation, dynamic hip screw (DHS) fixation, hemiarthroplasty (HA), and total hip arthroplasty (THA) in terms of surgical and functional outcomes, reoperation and postoperative complications.

Methods: We searched PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Clinical trials, CINAHL, and Embase for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs up to 31 July 2022. A frequentist network meta-analysis was performed to assess the comparative effects of the four operative procedures, using fixed-effects and random-effects models.

Article Synopsis
  • Ulcerative proctitis (UP) is a rare form of ulcerative colitis in children, with the study analyzing clinical features and outcomes of 196 diagnosed patients aged under 18 from 2016 to 2020.
  • Most patients presented with symptoms like bloody stools and abdominal pain, and the study found that higher initial disease activity scores (PUCAI) were linked to worse outcomes, including the need for more aggressive treatments.
  • By the end of the study, nearly half of the patients showed disease progression, and only a small percentage required colectomy, highlighting the challenges in managing UP in pediatric patients.

Initially established as a voluntary prosthesis register for total ankle replacement, the registry now enables analysis of revisions, complications, and clinical and functional outcomes-including patient-reported outcome measures-based on a period spanning more than 10 years. To allow analyses of the outcomes of ankle arthrodesis and supramalleolar osteotomies for treatment of end-stage arthritis in the future, the registry was extended by structured capturing of these procedures in 2018. While descriptive and analytical statistical evaluations of total ankle replacement are already possible today, the number of datasets on arthrodesis and supramalleolar osteotomies is still too small to support these analyses or comparative evaluations.
