Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative developmental defect that affects the enamel tissue of permanent molars and can also occur in permanent incisors. Enamel affected by MIH has reduced hardness, increased porosity, and a higher organic content than unaffected enamel. These characteristics predispose the enamel to accumulation of bacteria and a higher prevalence of caries lesions.

Article Synopsis
  • Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) is typically used to check for left atrial appendage thrombus (LAT) before procedures like cardioversion, but it can be uncomfortable for patients on long-term anticoagulants.
  • A machine learning model called LAT-AI was developed to predict the presence of LAT using data from a large patient registry involving both training and external testing cohorts.
  • The study found that LAT-AI performed better than conventional methods in predicting LAT, and implementing its protocol could help 40% of patients on anticoagulation avoid unnecessary TOE procedures.

  • Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are rare in individuals under 25, and a study examined 444 such patients over a median follow-up of 9.7 years across 38 centers globally.
  • The study found that 11.1% had a history of thrombosis, with higher risks associated with the JAK2V617F mutation and hyperviscosity symptoms, while new thrombotic and hemorrhagic events occurred at significant rates.
  • It highlighted that disease transformation, particularly to myelofibrosis, was common, with splenomegaly identified as a new risk factor, indicating a need for updated management guidelines for young MPN patients.

Left main coronary artery (LMCA) injury is an uncommon complication of catheter ablation. Due to the large myocardial area at risk, its presentation is usually acute with a dramatic course and life-threatening sequelae. Increased susceptibility to spontaneous coronary artery dissection has recently been implied in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV).

Niger J Med

March 2013

Department of Family Medicine, Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Abia state, Nigeria and visiting Consultant Family Physician, St. Vincent De Paul Hospital, Amuric-Omanze, Imo state, Nigeria.

Background: As the distribution and awareness of free insecticide treated nets (ITNs) for malaria control continues to grow in Nigeria in order to meet the coverage target for the year 2010, a large gap exists between acquiring them, using them, and adhering to its use by families of under-five children. Therefore, the family biosocial variables driving its adherence need to be explored if the potential benefits of the nets are to be fully harnessed by families of under-five children in Nigeria. This study was aimed at describing family biosocial variables driving adherence to the use of insecticide treated nets among under-five children managed for malaria in a rural hospital in Eastern Nigeria.
