Multi-task learning with cross-task consistency for improved depth estimation in colonoscopy.

Med Image Anal

January 2025

School of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Colonoscopy screening is the gold standard procedure for assessing abnormalities in the colon and rectum, such as ulcers and cancerous polyps. Measuring the abnormal mucosal area and its 3D reconstruction can help quantify the surveyed area and objectively evaluate disease burden. However, due to the complex topology of these organs and variable physical conditions, for example, lighting, large homogeneous texture, and image modality estimating distance from the camera (aka depth) is highly challenging.

Antigen-driven T-cell proliferation is often measured using fluorescent dye dilution assays, such as the CFSE-based proliferation assay. Dye dilution assays have been powerful tools to detect human CD4 T-cell responses, particularly against autoantigens. However, it is not known how many cells within the proliferating population are specific for the stimulating antigen.

Article Synopsis
  • The meta-analysis examines how sex affects mortality risk in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) who lack standard modifiable risk factors (referred to as SMuRF-less) compared to those who have at least one risk factor (SMuRF).
  • It analyzed data from eight studies, revealing that women in the SMuRF-less group had higher in-hospital mortality rates than men, while men showed no significant increase in mortality.
  • The findings indicate that women without cardiovascular risk factors face greater short- and medium-term mortality risks after an ACS event compared to their male counterparts.

Personalisation of therapy in irritable bowel syndrome: a hypothesis.

Lancet Gastroenterol Hepatol

December 2024

Leeds Gastroenterology Institute, St James's University Hospital, Leeds, UK; Leeds Institute of Medical Research at St James's, University of Leeds, Leeds, UK.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of gut-brain interaction characterised by symptoms of abdominal pain, occurring at least 1 day per week, and a change in stool frequency or form. Individuals with IBS are usually subtyped according to their predominant bowel habit, which is used to direct symptom-based treatment. However, this approach is probably an oversimplification of a complex and multidimensional condition, and other factors, such as psychological health, are known to influence symptom severity and prognosis.

Dietary management of irritable bowel syndrome: considerations, challenges, and solutions.

Lancet Gastroenterol Hepatol

December 2024

Food and Mood Centre, Institute for Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Translation, Deakin University, Geelong, VIC, Australia.

Diet is a cornerstone in the management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There is evidence of efficacy across the spectrum of dietary management strategies, including some supplements (eg, specific fibres), foods, and whole diets (eg, a diet low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols [known as the low-FODMAP diet]). Whole-diet interventions, in particular those that restrict intake, can be challenging to deliver effectively and safely.

Concentration of kidney markers and detection of exosomes in urine samples collected in cotton wool balls in preterm and term neonates.

Pathology

October 2024

Northern Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney, St Leonards, NSW, Australia; Renal Research, Kolling Institute of Medical Research, Royal North Shore Hospital, St Leonards, NSW, Australia.

Collecting urine samples in neonates by catheterisation or suprapubic puncture causes trauma, whereas self-adhesive collection bags can damage fragile skin. An alternative method is the collection of samples from urine-soaked cotton wool balls placed in diapers. The aim of this study was to compare the concentration of albumin, creatinine, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), and uromodulin between clean-catch urine and samples collected in cotton wool balls in neonates and assess the efficiency of exosome extraction.

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is associated with increased resting energy expenditure. However, the introduction of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) has resulted in a paradigm shift in nutritional status for many people with CF, with increase body mass index and reduction in the need for nutritional support. While these changes are likely to reflect improved clinical status and an associated downregulation of energy expenditure, they may also reflect drug-induced alterations in metabolic perturbations within CF cells.

Article Synopsis
  • - Acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI) is a leading cause of child mortality globally, particularly affecting children in Papua New Guinea (PNG) due to Streptococcus pneumoniae.
  • - Researchers conducted whole-exome sequencing on children in PNG and found a specific genetic variant (a single-nucleotide variant in the COQ6 gene) that is linked to higher morbidity from ALRI, with evidence from both human and mouse studies supporting its role.
  • - The COQ6 variant plays a significant role in the biosynthesis of ubiquinone and impacts how the immune system responds to infections, highlighting a new genetic risk factor for pneumonia in PNG and the enzyme's involvement in inflammatory responses.

Left ventricular size and heart failure: A cardiac MRI assessment of 38,129 individuals from the UK Biobank.

Int J Cardiol

January 2025

Heart, Exercise and Research Trials (HEART) Lab, St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research, Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia; Department of Cardiology, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia; The University of Melbourne, Parkville, Victoria, Australia; Victor Chang Cardiovascular Research Institute, Darlinghurst, Australia.

Background: Previous studies suggest that prevalent heart failure (HF) differs based on left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular (LV) chamber size. Furthermore, the prevalence of HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is often considered approaching, or exceeding that of HF with reduced ejection fraction in the community.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate prevalent and incident HF based on LVEF and CMR-determined LV size within a large community-dwelling cohort.
