Precise quantitative assessment of this reaction by flow cytometry made it possible to record and evaluate the severity of the inflammatory processes in a wide spectrum of diseases including diphtheria, hepatitis, pneumonia, bronchial asthma, arthritis, vasculitis, postoperative complications, tuberculosis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and myocardial infarction. This approach can be employed as a highly sensitive method of detection of inflammatory reactions and monitoring of their course in various pathological processes.

In some patients with stable and unstable angina pectoris and in some donors without clinical manifestations of cardiovascular diseases and other pathologies, spontaneous platelet aggregation was completely suppressed by glycoprotein IIb-IIIa antagonists blocking the interaction of this glycoprotein with fibrinogen. Antibodies inhibiting binding of glycoprotein Ib with von Willebrand factor had no effect on the level and rate of spontaneous platelet aggregation. In the donor group, the level of spontaneous aggregation was almost 1.

The main properties of a monofunctional riboflavin kinase from B. subtilis have been studied for the first time; the enzyme is responsible for a key reaction in flavin biosynthesis--the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of riboflavin with production of flavin mononucleotide. The vital fluorescent bisbenzimidazole dye Hoechst 33342 (4342), which binds tightly but not covalently to DNA in the minor groove, was used for studying interactions of agents noncovalently binding with DNA. It was shown that the decrease in the rigidity (persistent length) of phage lambda DNA, revealed previously by laser correlation spectroscopy, occurs in an aqueous solution at concentrations of sodium salts less than 10(-2) M in the pH range 4-9.5. DNA coils of anomalously small size (approximately twofold less than the size reported by other authors) are formed.

A minimal model for the coupling of fluxes of two different anions was constructed, in which one anion Y, is transferred by both the cotransport and anion-exchange pathways, whereas the other anion, Z, only by the anion-exchange mechanism. The possibilities of the model for describing the cooperativity of cotransport and anion-exchange pathways are demonstrated by using the computer simulation approach. It is shown that the energetic coupling of Y and Z anion fluxes becomes possible when the following conditions are fulfilled: (1) The inward-directed flux of Y by the cotransport pathway exceeds its anion-exchange flux directed outward; (2) the reorientation probability of the Y-loaded anion-exchanger is higher than that of the unloaded exchanger.

The aim of this study was to estimate the frequencies of some DNA polymorphisms of two genes of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), M235T angiotensinogen gene and insertion-deletion polymorphism in angiotensin-converting enzyme gene, in older (>55 years old) myocardial infarction survival and control groups. For this purpose 198 myocardial infarction (MI) patients and 152 randomly selected healthy persons have been analyzed. We have not found any differences in allele and genotype distribution in the above-mentioned genes for either group.
