Prediction of chronic severe intestinal failure-associated liver disease by current criteria in adults: A descriptive cohort study.

Introduction: Intestinal failure-associated liver disease covers a spectrum of conditions from mild to end-stage disease. Currently, there are 9 diagnostic criteria divided to four categories: cholestasis, steatosis, fibrosis, and unclassified. Our aim was to evaluate the application of these criteria to patients with chronic severe liver disease in patients with intestinal failure.

Long-Term Oncologic Outcomes in Robot-Assisted and Video-Assisted Lobectomies for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

This study compares long-term outcomes in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) lobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); all consecutive patients who underwent RATS or VATS lobectomy for NSCLC between July 2015 and December 2021 in our center were enrolled in a single-center prospective study. The primary outcomes were overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and recurrence rate. The secondary outcomes were complication rate, length of hospitalization (LOS), duration of chest tubes (LOD), and number of lymph node stations harvested.

Long-term human spaceflight and inflammaging: Does it promote aging?

Spaceflight and its associated stressors, such as microgravity, radiation exposure, confinement, circadian derailment and disruptive workloads represent an unprecedented type of exposome that is entirely novel from an evolutionary stand point. Within this perspective, we aimed to review the effects of prolonged spaceflight on immune-neuroendocrine systems, brain and brain-gut axis, cardiovascular system and musculoskeletal apparatus, highlighting in particular the similarities with an accelerated aging process. In particular, spaceflight-induced muscle atrophy/sarcopenia and bone loss, vascular and metabolic changes, hyper and hypo reaction of innate and adaptive immune system appear to be modifications shared with the aging process.

Seven Years of Culture Collection of : Antimicrobial Resistance and Molecular Epidemiology.

The emergence of isolates displaying resistance to antimicrobials, in particular to ceftriaxone monotherapy or ceftriaxone plus azithromycin, represents a global public health concern. This study aimed to analyze the trend of antimicrobial resistance in a 7-year isolate collection retrospective analysis in Italy. Molecular typing on a subsample of gonococci was also included.

A regional-based newborn hearing screening program: the Emilia-Romagna model after ten years of legislation.

Background: Hearing loss, occurring in 1-3/1,000 newborns in the well-babies population, is one of the most common congenital diseases, and hearing screening at birth still represents the only means for its early detection. Since 2011 the Emilia Romagna Regional Health Agency has recommended Newborn Hearing Screening for all babies at its birth points and for newborns moving to the region. The aims of this study are to analyze the results of this regional-based Newborn Hearing Screening program and to discuss the impact of the legislative endorsement on the organization.

Duodenal Gastric Metaplasia and Duodenal Neuroendocrine Neoplasms: More Than a Simple Coincidence?

Background: Duodenal gastric metaplasia (DGM) is considered a precancerous lesion. No data are available regarding its possible role as a risk factor for duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms (dNENs).

Aims: To assess the prevalence of DGM in a cohort of dNENs.

A Tailored Lipid Supplement Restored Membrane Fatty Acid Composition and Ameliorates In Vitro Biological Features of Human Amniotic Epithelial Cells.

Cell culture conditions influence several biological and biochemical features of stem cells (SCs), including the membrane lipid profile, thus limiting the use of SCs for cell therapy approaches. The present study aims to investigate whether the in vitro culture may alter the membrane fatty acid signature of human Amniotic Epithelial Cells (hAECs). The analysis of the membrane fatty acid composition of hAECs cultured in basal medium showed a loss in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), in particular in omega-6 (ω-6) content, compared to freshly isolated hAECs.

Serological differentiation of West Nile virus- and Usutu virus-induced antibodies by envelope proteins with modified cross-reactive epitopes.

West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) are mosquito-borne viruses that belong to the Japanese encephalitis virus serocomplex within the genus Flavivirus. Due to climate change and the expansion of mosquito vectors, flaviviruses are becoming endemic in increasing numbers of countries. WNV infections are reported with symptoms ranging from mild fever to severe neuro-invasive disease.

Robotic Surgery: Rediscovering Human Anatomy.

Since its advent, robotic surgery has redefined the operating room experience. It directly addressed and resolved many of the shortcomings of laparoscopic methods while maintaining a minimally invasive approach that brought benefits in cosmesis and healing for patients but also benefits in ergonomics and precision for surgeons. This new platform has brought with it changes in surgical training and education, principally through the utilization of virtual reality.

Vaginal and Anal Microbiome during Infections.

(CT) is the agent of the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection worldwide, with a significant impact on women's health. Despite the increasing number of studies about the vaginal microbiome in women with CT infections, information about the composition of the anal microbiome is still lacking. Here, we assessed the bacterial community profiles of vaginal and anal ecosystems associated or not with CT infection in a cohort of Caucasian young women.

Melanoma of glans penis and urethra: A case report and systematic review of the literature of a rare and complex neoplasm.

Objective: To evaluate the features and prognosis of melanoma of glans penis and urethra, with the presentation of a significant case report.

Materials And Methods: A systematic literature review was performed using the MEDLINE (PubMed) and Cochrane Libraries databases to identify all cases of male mucosal melanoma reported.

Results: Two hundred fifty-two patients with male mucosal primary melanoma were found.

Sorafenib in the Treatment of Virus-Related HCC: Differences Between HCV and HBV.

Hepatitis B- and C-virus (HBV and HCV) infections contribute to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development through several different mechanisms. In addition to a diverse molecular background, HCC subtypes also show differences in their metabolic profiles, suggesting that prevention and treatment might require the integration of multiple different approaches. We here analyzed the response of two HCC cell lines representative of different virus-related etiology, namely Hep3B (HBV+) and HUH7 (permissive to HCV replication) to sorafenib treatment.

A New Predictive Technology for Perinatal Stem Cell Isolation Suited for Cell Therapy Approaches.

The use of stem cells for regenerative applications and immunomodulatory effect is increasing. Amniotic epithelial cells (AECs) possess embryonic-like proliferation ability and multipotent differentiation potential. Despite the simple isolation procedure, inter-individual variability and different isolation steps can cause differences in isolation yield and cell proliferation ability, compromising reproducibility observations among centers and further applications.

Moreover, this species can cause severe human diseases in susceptible individuals. To investigate the zoonotic potential of , 203 sympatric isolates from both humans and cattle, isolated in the same time frame (2018) and in the same geographic area (Emilia Romagna region, Northern Italy), were characterized by molecular capsular typing (MCT), pilus island typing (PI), and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST).

How direct measurements of worker eyes with a Scheimpflug camera can affect lensdose coefficients in interventional radiology.

The 2013/59/Euratom Directive reduced the occupational exposure limits for the lens. Since it has become crucial to estimate the dose absorbed by the lens, we have studied the individual variability of exposed workers' ocular conformations with respect to the data estimated from their personal dosimetry. The anterior eye conformations of 45 exposed workers were acquired using Scheimpflug imaging and classified according to their sight conditions (emmetropia, myopia or hypermetropia).

Risk of preoperative understaging of duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms: a plea for caution in the treatment strategy.

Purpose: Pretreatment staging is the milestone for planning either surgical or endoscopic treatment in duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms (dNENs). Herein, a series of surgically treated dNEN patients was evaluated to assess the concordance between the pre- and postsurgical staging.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients with a histologically confirmed diagnosis of dNENs, who underwent surgical resection observed at eight Italian tertiary referral centers.

Novel drug-loaded film forming patch based on gelatin and snail slime.

Gelatin-based films enriched with snail slime are proposed as novel biodegradable and naturally bioadhesive patches for cutaneous drug delivery. Films (thickness range 163-248 μm) were stretchable and they adhered firmly onto the wetted skin, especially those with high amount (70% V/V) of snail slime extract. Fluconazole was selected as model drug and added to films containing the highest amount of snail slime.

Factors affecting antidepressant use by patients requiring home parenteral nutrition.

Background: Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) is a life-saving therapy for patients with chronic intestinal failure but can be associated with a degree of psychological distress. The factors associated with the need for antidepressants (ADs) in this cohort have not yet been described.

Methods: The study involved prospective data collection from patients attending an HPN clinic at a national intestinal failure referral center.

Background: Supraglottic airway devices (SADs) are precious tools for airway management in both routine and rescue situations; few studies have analyzed the risk factors for their difficult insertion.

Methods: The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for difficult insertion for a specific SAD, the Laryngeal Mask Airway LMA-Supreme™ (LMAS). This was a prospective multicentric observational study on a cohort of Italian adult patients receiving general anesthesia for elective surgery.

Essential oils (EOs) are a complex mixture of hydrophobic and volatile compounds synthesized from aromatic plants, commonly present in the human diet. In recent years, many in vitro studies have suggested possible anticancer properties of single EO compounds, on colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. However, the majority of these studies did not compare the effects of these compounds on normal and cancer colon cells.
