Gestational age at birth and hospitalisations for infections among individuals aged 0-50 years in Norway: a longitudinal, register-based, cohort study.

Background: Preterm birth is associated with increased risk of childhood infections. Whether this risk persists into adulthood is unknown and limited information is available on risk patterns across the full range of gestational ages.

Methods: In this longitudinal, register-based, cohort study, we linked individual-level data on all individuals born in Norway (January 01, 1967-December 31, 2016) to nationwide hospital data (January 01, 2008-December 31, 2017).

Long-term temporal trends in incidence rate and case fatality of sepsis and COVID-19-related sepsis in Norwegian hospitals, 2008-2021: a nationwide registry study.

Objectives: To estimate temporal trends in incidence rate (IR) and case fatality during a 14-year period from 2008 to 2021, and to assess possible shifts in these trends during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Setting: All Norwegian hospitals 2008-2021.

Participants: 317 705 patients ≥18 year with a sepsis International Classification of Diseases 10th revision code retrieved from The Norwegian Patient Registry.

Factor structure of the patient health questionnaire-4 in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Background: Persons with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently experience symptoms of anxiety and depression. In this population, there is a need for validated brief self-report screening questionnaires to assess the severity of comorbid mental health problems. The Patient Health Questionnaire 4 (PHQ-4) is a self-report questionnaire that may contribute to this purpose as it can screen for both disorders efficiently.

Femicide trends at the start of the 21st. century: Prevalence, risk factors and national public health actions.

Lethal violence requires a gender-based analysis which recognises that femicide is different from homicide in many ways. Structural factors such as national income and wealth equality together with government policies may influence the scale of the problem globally. This study is an original attempt to examine associations between femicide rates, these structural factors and national action plans using a longitudinal design.

Structure-function dynamics of engineered, modular neuronal networks with controllable afferent-efferent connectivity.

Microfluidic devices interfaced with microelectrode arrays have in recent years emerged as powerful platforms for studying and manipulatingneuronal networks at the micro- and mesoscale. By segregating neuronal populations using microchannels only permissible to axons, neuronal networks can be designed to mimic the highly organized, modular topology of neuronal assemblies in the brain. However, little is known about how the underlying topological features of such engineered neuronal networks contribute to their functional profile.

The Feasibility of Web-Based Working Memory Training in Patients With Cancer Attending Inpatient Rehabilitation.

Introduction: Cognitive complaints are common late effects in patients with cancer, and no standard treatment exists. Recent studies with several patient populations have indicated that there is potential to improve working memory (WM) via web-based WM training. However, the feasibility of including web-based WM training as part of inpatient cancer rehabilitation, in combination with unprompted home-based training, has not been studied.

Current postgraduate training in emergency medicine in the Nordic countries.

Background: Emergency Medicine (EM) is an independent specialty in all five Nordic countries. This study aims to evaluate the structure of post-graduate EM training in the area.

Methods: A leading hospital or hospitals in EM training in each country were identified.

Who Returns to work? Exploring the Role of Interpersonal Problems in Occupational Rehabilitation.

Purpose: Current interventions designed to facilitate return to work (RTW) after long-term sick leave show weak effects, indicating the need for new approaches to the RTW process. The importance of social relationships in the workplace is widely recognized in existing RTW literature, but very little is known about the role of the interpersonal problems of the returning worker. Current research indicates that a subset of these - hostile-dominant interpersonal problems - give particular disadvantages in several life areas.

Sociodemographic factors and use of pain medication are associated with health-related quality of life: results from an adult community mental health service in Norway.

Purpose: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important aspect of mental health outcomes. There are few studies on HRQoL in heterogeneous patient populations seeking help at community mental health services. The aims of the study were to compare how HRQoL, measured by the EuroQol five dimensions with five levels (EQ-5D-5L), was distributed compared to other samples from national and international studies, and to explore what factors are associated with HRQoL.

Arterial events in cancer patients treated with apixaban for venous thrombosis.

Introduction: In a recent interventional study of cancer patients with newly diagnosed venous thrombosis (VT), we found a high risk of arterial thrombotic events (AT) during treatment with therapeutic doses of apixaban.

Methods: Total 298 cancer patients with VT received apixaban as treatment and secondary prophylaxis for up to 36 months. AT was registered as a serious adverse event, and this is a post hoc analysis of risk factors for AT.

Fecal Fungal Microbiota (Mycobiome) Study as a Potential Tool for Precision Medicine in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

There is growing evidence of the role of fungal microbiota in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Fungi can exert direct pro-inflammatory effects or modify the bacterial composition via interkingdom interactions. Although several studies have demonstrated alterations in the fecal fungal microbiota composition in IBD, there is a wide variation in the mycobiome in different populations, with no definite pattern that can define the mycobiome in IBD having yet been identified.

Mortality after hospital admission for trauma in Norway: A retrospective observational national cohort study.

Background: National quality data for trauma care in Norway have not previously been reported. We have therefore assessed crude and risk-adjusted 30-day mortality in trauma cases after primary hospital admission on national and regional levels for 36 acute care hospitals and four regional trauma centres.

Methods: All patients in the Norwegian Trauma Registry in 2015-2018 were included.

Comparing PM, respirable dust, and total dust fractions using real-time and gravimetric samples in an exposure chamber study.

Using an exposure chamber, we investigate the precision of the DustTrak DRX monitor by comparing its results to those obtained from taking traditional gravimetric samples of two stone minerals commonly used in asphalt and lactose powder. We also discuss the possibility of using real-time monitors such as DustTrak DRX for occupational exposure monitoring purposes. The results are based on 19 days of experiment, each day with measurements collected over 4 h.

Wrist ballistocardiography and invasively recorded blood pressure in healthy volunteers during reclining bike exercise.

Ballistocardiogram (BCG) features are of interest in wearable cardiovascular monitoring of cardiac performance. We assess feasibility of wrist acceleration BCG during exercise for estimating pulse transit time (PTT), enabling broader cardiovascular response studies during acute exercise and improved monitoring in individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We also examine the relationship between PTT, blood pressure (BP), and stroke volume (SV) during exercise and posture interventions.

The effects of transitioning from immediate release to extended release cysteamine therapy in Norwegian patients with nephropathic cystinosis: a retrospective study.

Background: Nephropathic cystinosis is a rare lysosomal storage disorder in which accumulation of cystine and formation of crystals particularly impair kidney function and gradually lead to multi-organ dysfunction. Lifelong therapy with the aminothiol cysteamine can delay the development of kidney failure and the need for transplant. The purpose of our long-term study was to explore the effects of transitioning from immediate release (IR) to extended release (ER) formulation in Norwegian patients in routine clinical care.

Calprotectin and CRP as biomarkers of cardiovascular disease risk in patients with chronic kidney disease: a follow-up study at 5 and 10 years.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and low-grade inflammation are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Calprotectin, a protein mainly secreted by activated neutrophils during inflammatory conditions, has been linked to CVD risk in general populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of calprotectin with CVD risk in CKD patients, relative to C-reactive protein (CRP).

European Association of Urology Guidelines on Testicular Cancer: 2023 Update.

Context: Each year the European Association of Urology (EAU) produce a document based on the most recent evidence on the diagnosis, therapy, and follow-up of testicular cancer (TC).

Objective: To represent a summarised version of the EAU guidelines on TC for 2023 with a focus on key changes in the 2023 update.

Evidence Acquisition: A multidisciplinary panel of TC experts, comprising urologists, medical and radiation oncologists, and pathologists, reviewed the results from a structured literature search to compile the guidelines document.

Norwegian version of the Edinburgh cognitive and behavioural ALS screen: Construct validity, internal consistency, inter-rater, and test-retest reliability.

Background: Research collaboration highlight a need for validated tests in other languages than English. Translation and culture adjustments may threaten essential features of the original instrument.

Objective: To assess the internal consistency, inter-rater and test-retest reliability, and construct validity of the Norwegian version of the Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioural Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Screen (ECAS-N).

Mental disorder prevalence in chronic pain patients using opioid versus non-opioid analgesics: A registry-linkage study.

Background: Chronic pain and mental disorders are leading causes of disability worldwide. Individuals with chronic pain are more likely to experience mental disorders compared to individuals without chronic pain, but large-scale estimates are lacking. We aimed to calculate overall prevalence of mental health diagnoses from primary and secondary care among individuals treated for chronic pain in 2019 and to compare prevalence among chronic pain patients receiving opioid versus non-opioid analgesics, according to age and gender.

Adverse childhood experiences and pre-pregnancy body mass index in the HUNT study: A population-based cohort study.

Objective: Investigate the association between adverse childhood experiences and pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) in a population-based cohort in Trøndelag county, Norway.

Materials And Methods: We linked data from the third (2006-2008) or fourth (2017-2019) survey of the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) and the Medical Birth Registry of Norway for 6679 women. Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the association between adverse childhood experiences and pre-pregnancy BMI.

Comparison of correctly and incorrectly classified patients for in-hospital mortality prediction in the intensive care unit.

Background: The use of machine learning is becoming increasingly popular in many disciplines, but there is still an implementation gap of machine learning models in clinical settings. Lack of trust in models is one of the issues that need to be addressed in an effort to close this gap. No models are perfect, and it is crucial to know in which use cases we can trust a model and for which cases it is less reliable.

High concentrations of soluble endoglin can inhibit BMP9 signaling in non-endothelial cells.

Endoglin (ENG) is a single-pass transmembrane protein highly expressed on vascular endothelial cells, although low expression levels can be detected in many other cell types. Its extracellular domain can be found in circulation known as soluble endoglin (sENG). Levels of sENG are elevated in many pathological conditions, in particular preeclampsia.
