Article Synopsis
  • Platelet transfusions are commonly administered in ICUs for patients with low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia), but the specific practices and their outcomes are not well-documented.
  • In a study of 504 ICU patients across Europe and the U.S., 20.8% received platelet transfusions, primarily using pooled products, with varying practices in dosage and volume across different countries.
  • The research found that while platelet transfusions are frequent, they provide limited increases in platelet counts, indicating potential inconsistencies in their effectiveness and administration practices.

Background: Neonatal jaundice is a common condition that can lead to brain damage and disabilities when severe cases go undetected. Low- and middle-income countries often lack accurate methods for detecting neonatal jaundice and rely on visual assessment, resulting in a higher incidence of adverse consequences. Picterus Jaundice Pro (Picterus JP), an easy-to-use and affordable smartphone-based screening device for the condition, has demonstrated higher accuracy than visual assessment in Norwegian, Philippine and Mexican newborns.

Background: Drug concentration in blood or urine is an acknowledged method to detect nonadherence. Observational studies suggest that informing patients about low or absent serum drug levels improves blood pressure (BP). We performed a multicenter randomized clinical trial to test the hypothesis that therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) could improve drug adherence and BP in patients with uncontrolled hypertension (HT).

Bladder cancer (BC) diagnosis is reliant on cystoscopy, an invasive procedure associated with urinary tract infections. This has sparked interest in identifying noninvasive biomarkers in body fluids such as blood and urine. A source of biomarkers in these biofluids are extracellular vesicles (EVs), nanosized vesicles that contain a wide array of molecular cargo, including small noncoding RNA such as transfer RNA-derived fragments (tRF) and microRNA.

Background: Ischaemic intestines could be a driver of critical illness through an inflammatory response. We have previously published reports on a biomarker for intestinal injury, plasma Intestinal Fatty Acid Binding Protein (IFABP), and inflammatory biomarkers after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). In this post-hoc study we explored the potential indirect effects of intestinal injury mediated through the inflammatory response on organ dysfunction and mortality.

Objective: Evaluation of left ventricular (LV) function in critical care patients is useful for guidance of therapy and early detection of LV dysfunction, but the tools currently available are too time-consuming. To resolve this issue, we previously proposed a method for the continuous and automatic quantification of global LV function in critical care patients based on the detection and tracking of anatomical landmarks on transesophageal heart ultrasound. In the present study, our aim was to improve the performance of mitral annulus detection in transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
