Genomic characteristics and molecular epidemiology of MRSA from medical centers in Mexico: Results from the Invifar network.

Introduction: The methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) genome varies by geographical location. This study aims to determine the genomic characteristics of MRSA using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data from medical centers in Mexico and to explore the associations between antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence factors.

Methods: This study included 27 clinical isolates collected from sterile sites at eight centers in Mexico in 2022 and 2023.

A national survey on gastroenterology and hepatology training reveals dissimilar perceptions between trainees and trainers and an important need for improvement in training programs.

Objective: We aimed to collect data on gastroenterology and hepatology training from the viewpoint of trainees and trainers.

Methods: A national online survey was distributed among trainees and specialists at certified training institutions between February and May 2024.

Results: Overall, 226 respondents - 98 trainees, 78 trainers, 50 program directors, and department heads responded, with a national coverage of 70% of trainees and 85% of specialty-department heads.

White matter connections within the central sulcus subserving the somato-cognitive action network.

The somato-cognitive action network (SCAN) consists of three nodes interspersed within Penfield's motor effector regions. The configuration of the somato-cognitive action network nodes resembles the one of the 'plis de passage' of the central sulcus: small gyri bridging the precentral and postcentral gyri. Thus, we hypothesize that these may provide a structural substrate of the somato-cognitive action network.

In the United States, rates of living kidney donation have been stagnant, which is partly related to concerns over medical and financial risks. Recent research has better characterized the risks of living kidney donation, although the field is limited by a lack of robust registries.

Prevention strategies of esophageal stenosis after endoscopic resection for superficial esophageal cancer: a Bayesian network meta-analysis.

Introduction: What interventions effectively prevent postoperative stenosis following endoscopic resection (ER) of superficial esophageal cancer? This study aimed to identify effective interventions or combinations through a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Methods: Six databases were systematically searched for eligible studies up to 30 April 2023, on interventions to prevent esophageal stenosis post-ER. Odds ratios (ORs) evaluated stenosis rate (primary outcome) and complications (secondary outcome), while mean differences (MD) evaluated endoscopic balloon dilatation (EBD) sessions post-stenosis.

Termination of Resuscitation Rules for In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest.

Importance: There are no validated decision rules for terminating resuscitation during in-hospital cardiac arrest. Decision rules may guide termination and prevent inappropriate early termination of resuscitation.

Pneumopericardium (PPC) is defined by the presence of gas in the pericardial cavity, often leading to cardiac tamponade and a high mortality rate. This report describes a case involving a 33-year-old man found deceased a few meters from a knife, his clothes intact, with no resuscitation attempt made. A knotted scarf was tightly fastened around his neck, without ligature mark.

Nonlinear association between liver fat content and lumbar bone mineral density in overweight and obese individuals: evidence from a large-scale health screening data in China.

Background: The impact of fatty liver disease on lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) represents an intriguing area of study, particularly in light of established research linking obesity to bone metabolism. However, there remains limited investigation into the correlation between quantifying liver fat content (LFC) and lumbar BMD among overweight and obese populations, particularly within the Chinese demographic. This study aims to accurately quantify LFC and investigate its association with lumbar BMD in overweight or obese individuals.

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of the Effectiveness of Whole-school Interventions Promoting Mental Health and Preventing Risk Behaviours in Adolescence.

Adolescence is a vulnerable period for the onset of mental disorders and risk behaviours. Based on the Health-Promoting Schools Framework, whole-school interventions offer a promising strategy in this developmentally-sensitive cohort, through championing a systems-based approach to promotion and prevention that involves the key stakeholders in an adolescent's life. The evidence-base surrounding the effectiveness of whole-school interventions, however, remains inconclusive, partly due to the insufficient number of studies in previous meta-analyses.

Keratin/chitosan film promotes wound healing in rats with combined radiation-wound injury.

Human hair keratin, a natural protein derived from human hair, has emerged prominently in the field of wound repair, showcasing its unique regenerative capabilities and extensive application potential. However, it is a challenge for the keratin to efficiently therapy the impaired wound healing, such as combined radiation-wound injury. Here, we report a keratin/chitosan (KRT/CS) film for skin repair of chronic wounds in in rats with combined radiation-wound injury.

Left neck and right biceps muscle vibrations have similar effects on perceived body orientation.

Vibrating muscles to manipulate proprioceptive input creates the sensation of an apparent change in body position. This study investigates whether vibrating the right biceps muscle has similar effects as vibrating the left posterior neck muscles. Based on previous observations, we hypothesized that both types of muscle vibration would shift the perception of healthy subjects' subjective straight-ahead (SSA) orientation in the horizontal plane to the left.

Severe bradycardia in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea and good early response to CPAP.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) may lead to heart rhythm abnormalities including bradycardia. Our aim was to ascertain clinical and echocardiographic parameters in patients with OSA in whom severe bradycardia was detected in an outpatient setting, as well as to evaluate the efficacy of CPAP therapy on heart rate normalization at the early stages of treatment.

Methods: Fifteen patients mild, moderate or severe OSA and concomitant bradycardia were enrolled.

Background: Neck and back pain pathologies are currently the main cause of absenteeism from work in Spain and in the European Union, and represent a high socio-labor, economic and health cost for the Health Systems.

Aim: To assess the effectiveness of a Back School Program of a Spanish mutual insurance company (risk factors, pain and disability scales) in women workers with low back or neck pain.

Design: We combined a descriptive study of first-session data collected in the total sample and a prospective multicenter intervention study in those participants who completed the second and third check-up at 6 and 9 months.

Background: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation guidelines recommend human milk (HM) as the ideal source of nutrition for children with CF (cwCF). Despite known pulmonary and nutritional benefits, fewer cwCF ever receive HM compared to the general population. Early nutrition choices are preference-sensitive, yet little is known about the factors that impede or sustain HM feeding among parents of cwCF.

Clopidogrel resistance results in recurring ischemic events, with African Americans (AA) suffering disproportionately. The aim of this study was to discover novel biomarkers of clopidogrel resistance in African Americans using genome and transcriptome data.

Genetic Services in Appalachia Conference Series.

This study examined the data generated as part of a seven-session webinar series that focused on genetics care provision in the medically underserved, rural Appalachian region and examined how these services have adapted to challenging practice environments. Barriers and facilitators to care in our region were considered. Data included a baseline survey of registrants, transcripts of sessions, and feedback about sessions.
