Percutaneous Doxycycline Ablation for Recurrent Aneurysmal Bone Cyst in the Sacroiliac Joint: A Case Report.

Introduction: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign, locally destructive, blood-filled reactive lesions of the bone most commonly presenting as pain or mass effect. Most are frequently located in the proximal humerus, distal femur, proximal tibia, spine, uncommonly the sacrum, and rarely the sacroiliac (SI) joint. We present a rare case of ABC in the SI joint and its recurrence treated with percutaneous intralesional doxycycline ablation and the corresponding outcome.

Increased Risk of Alzheimer's Disease With Glycemic Variability: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

There is increasing evidence that establishes a connection between fluctuations in glucose metabolism and the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Current research supports the notion that this metabolic imbalance significantly affects cognitive health. However, the specific mechanisms through which these fluctuations influence neurodegeneration, eventually leading to AD, require further exploration.

Exploring vision transformers for classifying early Barrett's dysplasia in endoscopic images: A pilot study on white-light and narrow-band imaging.

Background And Aim: Various deep learning models, based on convolutional neural network (CNN), have been shown to improve the detection of early esophageal neoplasia in Barrett's esophagus. Vision transformer (ViT), derived from natural language processing, has emerged as the new state-of-the-art for image recognition, outperforming predecessors such as CNN. This pilot study explores the use of ViT to classify the presence or absence of early esophageal neoplasia in endoscopic images of Barrett's esophagus.

Sparing confirmatory testing in primary aldosteronism (SCIPA): a multicenter retrospective diagnostic accuracy study.

Background: The diagnosis of primary aldosteronism (PA) is comprehensive, which includes case-detection testing, case confirmation followed by subtype classification. In certain instances, such as in the setting of spontaneous hypokalemia, suppressed renin activity (PRA) plus plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) of > 15 ng/dL, one may not proceed with confirmatory tests. However, the quality of evidence behind this approach is very low.

Bone turnover markers reference database in five Southeast Asian countries.

Osteoporosis is highly prevalent, particularly in developing countries. However, bone turnover marker reference ranges for management of osteoporosis in Asian population are yet to be explored and established. Thus, this study aims to develop a regional bone turnover markers (BTMs) reference database by combining country-specific reference database from five ASEAN countries: Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Pan-Asian adapted ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with early breast cancer.

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with early breast cancer were updated and published online in 2023, and adapted, according to previously established standard methodology, to produce the Pan-Asian adapted (PAGA) ESMO consensus guidelines for the management of Asian patients with early breast cancer. The adapted guidelines presented in this manuscript represent the consensus opinions reached by a panel of Asian experts in the treatment of patients with breast cancer representing the oncological societies of China (CSCO), Indonesia (ISHMO), India (ISMPO), Japan (JSMO), Korea (KSMO), Malaysia (MOS), the Philippines (PSMO), Singapore (SSO), Taiwan (TOS) and Thailand (TSCO), co-ordinated by ESMO and KSMO. The voting was based on scientific evidence and was independent of the current treatment practices, drug access restrictions and reimbursement decisions in the different Asian regions represented by the 10 oncological societies.

Background: Pituitary adenomas are benign brain tumors that impose a heavy burden on patients worldwide. The local burden of disease is yet to be established due to scarcity of data. In line with this, this study aims to present the challenges and gaps in the treatment of pituitary adenomas in the Philippines.

Radiation Oncology in the Philippines: Current State and Future Directions.

Purpose: As global cancer incidence continues to rise, low- to middle-income countries like the Philippines are projected to experience a disproportionate increase in cancer burden, further straining already limited resources. Radiation therapy (RT) is an essential and cost-effective modality in cancer care, both in the curative and palliative settings. In this article, we provide a brief narrative on the history of the field of radiation oncology in the Philippines and review the current challenges to effective and equitable RT service delivery in the country.

Viral Pneumonia: From Influenza to COVID-19.

Respiratory viruses are increasingly recognized as a cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). The implementation of new diagnostic technologies has facilitated their identification, especially in vulnerable population such as immunocompromised and elderly patients and those with severe cases of pneumonia. Barriers to the establishment of advanced technologies in developing countries were overcome when modern theranostics pertaining to the use of Ga-68 and Lu-177 PSMA and DOTATATE were first offered to patients in the Philippines in early 2018. However, significant growth was not experienced at St. Luke's Medical Center for five years and lutetium was not yet distributed to other institutions by a radiopharmaceutical supplier.
