Background And Aims: Many patients do not want life-prolonging treatments at critical stages of their illnesses, and are able to communicate their wishes to their families or surrogates. However, few among them have clarity on what such life-prolonging treatments mean or entail. This study clarifies differences in the perspectives of medical professionals based on levels of expertise with respect to treatment decisions for intensive care unit (ICU) patients whose wishes for end-of-life care are ambiguous.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the effectiveness of short vs. long attachment caps in colonoscopy for identifying causes of acute hematochezia, specifically looking at recent hemorrhage.
  • Using data from over 6,400 patients, researchers found that long cap users had significantly higher rates of diagnosing colonic diverticular bleeding and identifying active bleeding, compared to short cap users.
  • The conclusion suggests that long cap-assisted colonoscopy is more effective for diagnosing acute hematochezia and recognizing bleeding compared to short caps.

Background And Aims: Mechanical ventilation is associated with several risks, including barotrauma, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction. A delay in weaning from mechanical ventilation increases these risks, and prolonged weaning has been shown to increase hospital mortality. Various tools have been used in clinical practice to predict successful weaning from mechanical ventilation; however, they have a low prognostic accuracy.

Aim: The Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy Quality of Life (NVP QOL) Questionnaire is a self-report measure of health-related QOL for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. This study determines the best fitting factor structure for the NVP QOL Questionnaire and explores its measurement invariance in terms of observation time and parity.

Methods: A test-retest study of pregnant women was conducted at Gestational Weeks (GWs) 10-13 (T1:  = 381) and 1 week later (T2:  = 128) at one hospital and five clinics with the NVP QOL and the Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (PUQE).
