Background And Objectives: Progression of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is highly variable. On average, protein-truncating mutations are associated with the most severe kidney disease among all mutation classes. Here, we report that patients with protein-truncating mutations may also have mild kidney disease, a finding not previously well recognized.

Effects of neuromodulation on cognitive performance in individuals exhibiting addictive behaviors: A systematic review.

Drug Alcohol Depend

November 2018

Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research, Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster University, 100 West 5th Street, Hamilton, Ontario, L8P 3R2, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: There is growing interest in non-invasive brain stimulation techniques as treatments for addictive disorders. While multiple reviews have examined the effects of neuromodulation on craving and consumption, there has been no review of how neuromodulation affects cognitive functioning in addiction. This systematic review examined studies of the cognitive effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in individuals exhibiting addictive behavior.

Effects of neuromodulation on cognitive performance in individuals exhibiting addictive behaviour: a systematic review protocol.

Syst Rev

June 2018

Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster University, 100 West 5th Street, Hamilton, Ontario, L8P 3R2, Canada.

Background: Individuals with substance use and addictive disorders often display greater risk-taking behaviour, higher impulsivity, and altered reward processing compared to individuals without these disorders. While it is not known whether cognitive biases precede or result from addictive behaviour, they likely influence addiction-related decision-making, and may facilitate pathological behaviour. There is evidence that cognitive functions-including those shown to be altered in substance use and addictive disorders-can be influenced by neuromodulation techniques (specifically, transcranial direct current stimulation and transcranial magnetic stimulation).

Out of my league: Appraisals of anxiety and confidence in others by individuals with and without social anxiety disorder.

J Anxiety Disord

June 2018

Parkwood Institute, St. Joseph's Healthcare London and University of Waterloo, Canada; Department of Psychology and Centre for Mental Health Research, University of Waterloo, Canada; St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster University, Canada.

Forty participants with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and 42 healthy controls (HCs) were randomized to watch a confederate deliver a speech in either a visibly anxious or confident manner. Participants rated their perception of the presenter's desirability across five attributes and compared themselves to the presenter along these same dimensions. Participants then delivered their own speeches, and were rated in a similar manner by trained research assistants who were naïve to participants' group status and study objectives.

Women who are receiving an oral anticoagulant appear to be at higher risk of developing bleeding-related adverse events than men. Physiological bleeding related to the ovulatory cycle poses an ongoing risk for bleeding complications during anticoagulant therapy. Abnormal uterine bleeding and hemorrhagic ovarian cysts are risks specific to women of reproductive age who are treated with anticoagulants.

Prenatal maternal depression and a multilocus genetic profile of two susceptibility genes implicated in the stress response were examined in an interaction model predicting negative emotionality in the first 3 years. In 179 mother-infant dyads from the Maternal Adversity, Vulnerability, and Neurodevelopment cohort, prenatal depression (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depressions Scale) was assessed at 24 to 36 weeks. The multilocus genetic profile score consisted of the number of susceptibility alleles from the serotonin transporter linked polymorphic region gene (5-HTTLPR): no long-rs25531(A) (LA: short/short, short/long-rs25531(G) [LG], or LG/LG] vs.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Ontario: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Ont Health Technol Assess Ser

June 2016

Programs for Assessment of Technology in Health (PATH) Research Institute, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and Department of Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Background: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a comprehensive intervention of exercise training, education, and behaviour change to improve the physical and psychological condition of people with chronic respiratory disorders, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to promote long-term adherence to health-enhancing behaviours. Although PR is considered the standard of care for patients with COPD who remain symptomatic despite bronchodilator therapies, current evidence suggests that only 1.15% of COPD patients across Canada have access to PR facilities for care.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress and lipid dysregulation.

Expert Rev Mol Med

February 2011

Department of Medicine and Division of Nephrology, St Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Cellular cholesterol homeostasis is a fundamental and highly regulated process. Transcription factors known as sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) coordinate the expression of many genes involved in the biosynthesis and uptake of cholesterol. Dysregulation of SREBP activation and cellular lipid accumulation has been associated with endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR).
