Poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of persistent organic pollutants causing serious global concern. Plants can accumulate PFAS but their effect on plant physiology, especially at the molecular level is not very well understood. Hence, we used hydroponically-grown maize plants treated with a combination of eleven different PFAS (each at 100 μg L) to investigate their bioaccumulation and effects on the growth, physiology and their impact on the root proteome.

Department of Biotechnology, Saveetha School of Engineering, SIMATS, Thandalam, Chennai, Tamilnadu 602105, India.

FeO-TiO (FT) nanocomposites were successfully synthesized by template-assisted precipitation reaction using Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Polyethylene glycol (PVP-PEG), Tween-80 (T-80) and Cetyltrimethylammomium bromide (CTAB) as templates. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX, UV-DRS, FT-IR, and FT-Raman spectroscopic analysis. The photohemolysis studies were done in human erythrocytes and the cell viability studies were done in HeLa cell lines under the irradiation of an LED light source.

The aim and objectives of the study are as follows: (i) to implement automated patch-based classification of hand X-ray images using modified pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) models; (ii) to develop a customized CNN model for automated feature extraction and classification of hand X-ray images and to compare the performance of customized CNN models with non-linear and linear kernels; (iii) to construct the hand crafted feature fusion (SIFT+ Customized CNN features) and categorize the normal and RA using Machine Learning classifiers. The model was trained on 75 images (10,000 patches) of hand radiographs and tested using 25 images (500 patches) that were not included in the training set. The accuracy of the modified pre-trained model GoogLeNet was 89% and the proposed custom model three achieved an accuracy of 95%.

The hazardous risk posed by industrial effluent discharge into the ecosystem has raised a plethora of environmental issues, public health, and safety concerns. The effluents from industries such as tanning, leather, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and textiles are create significant stress on the aquatic ecosystem, which induces significant toxicity, involved in endocrine disruptions, and inhibits reproductive functions. Therefore, this review presented an overall abridgment of the effects of these effluents and their ability to synergize with modern pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetic chemicals, nanoparticles, and heavy metals.

Comparative photoluminescence study of nitrogen-doped carbon dots co-doped with boron and sulphur.

Luminescence

September 2022

Photonic Materials and Devices Laboratory, Department of Physics, National Institute of Technology Calicut, Kerala, India.

Although different studies in carbon dots (CDs) have been reported based on heteroatom doping, most of them have focussed on the enhancement of fluorescence properties. Here we report a comparative study of both fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of nitrogen-sulphur-doped CDs (N-S CDs) and nitrogen-boron-doped CDs (N-B CDs) with N-doped CDs (N CDs). The CDs used in the study were synthesized through microwave-assisted pyrolysis.

Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Ovarian Carcinoma.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

July 2022

Department of Chemistry, School of Advanced Sciences, KLE Technological University, Vidhyanagar, Hubballi - 580031, Karnataka, India.

The leading cause of gynecological cancer-related morbidity and mortality is ovarian cancer (OC), which is dubbed a silent killer. Currently, OC is a target of intense biomarker research, because it is often not discovered until the disease is advanced. The goal of OC research is to develop effective tests using biomarkers that can detect the disease at the earliest stages, which would eventually decrease the mortality, thereby preventing recurrence.

This paper aims to explore the relationship between big-five personality traits and investment behavior, particularly in the Indian context. Riding on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), we built a multi-layered moderated moderated-mediation model exploring the complex relationships between personality traits, investment attitude, and investment strategy. We collected data from 934 respondents from the southern part of India and analyzed using the Hayes (2018) PROCESS macros to test the hypotheses.

Article Synopsis
  • * A 5 Hp, four-stroke, single-cylinder engine operated in dual-fuel mode was tested, with results indicating that a gas flow rate of 6 liters per minute yields the best brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of 30.7%.
  • * Optimization experiments with different compression ratios and fuel injector pressures showed that a 240 bar pressure and 23° before top dead center (bTDC) resulted in the highest BTE of 35.1% while significantly reducing emissions of CO and hydrocarbons.

Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) exhibits selectivity in the intercalation of amino acids (AAs). When the MgAl-LDH derived mixed metal oxide was treated with different mixtures of AAs, preferential sorption of one AA over the other(s) was observed as indicated by XRD analysis of the products and HPLC analysis of the interlayer AA contents in the products. The order of preference was aspartic acid, glutamic acid (acidic AAs) > glycine, alanine (neutral AAs) > hystidine, and arginine (basic AAs).

Background: We aimed to compare statistical techniques estimating the association between SARS-CoV-2 RNA in untreated wastewater and sludge and reported coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases.

Methods: SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations (copies/mL) were measured from 24-h composite samples of wastewater in Massachusetts (MA) (daily; 8/19/2020-1/19/2021) and Maine (ME) (weekly; 9/1/2020-3/2/2021) and sludge samples in Connecticut (CT) (daily; 3/1/2020-6/1/2020). We fit linear, generalized additive with a cubic regression spline (GAM), Poisson, and negative binomial models to estimate the association between SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentration and reported COVID-19 cases.

Selection of the most suitable biomass material for bio-fuel generation is a complex and multi-criteria decision problem as it engages many conflicting criteria which have to be assessed simultaneously. In the past, researchers have used subjective weighing techniques, which question the reliability of the approach. In this study, two objective weighing methods such as Criteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC) and Entropy are used to calculate the weights of evaluating criteria and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is applied to select the suitable biomass material.
