Background: Due to its bone preserving philosophy, short-stem total hip arthroplasty (THA) has primarily been recommended for young and active patients. However, there may be benefits for elderly patients given a less invasive operative technique due to the short curved implant design. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes as well as perioperative complications of a calcar-guided short stem between a young (< 60 years) and a geriatric (> 75 years) population.

Background: Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is a major factor for morbidity and mortality after pancreatic resection. Risk stratification for POPF is important for adjustment of treatment, selection of target groups in trials and quality assessment in pancreatic surgery. In this study, we built a risk-prediction model for POPF based on a large number of predictor variables from the German pancreatic surgery registry StuDoQ|Pancreas.

To assess the accuracy and time requirements of image-guided percutaneous K-wire insertion in the spine using an advanced robot assistance device for needle guidance and to demonstrate a radiation-free workflow for the physician. A planning CT-scan was acquired of a cadaver specimen and analyzed using a 3D-interventional software integrated in the robotic device. The optimal needle path was simulated and the needle holder of the robot was used for guidance during K-wire insertion.

Background: The 3D laparoscopy is currently under intensive discussion. At the moment the majority of newly acquired laparoscopy systems include the 3D technique. New 4K systems, which will be offered in combination with 3D, are complicating the decision-making when buying new laparoscopic systems.

Background And Aims: The aim of the study was to evaluate the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development after treatment with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) and to compare HCC occurrence in these patients with that among patients treated with interferon (IFN)-based therapies.
Methods: We analyzed a large cohort with chronic hepatitis C virus patients for the onset of new HCC after DAA treatment. A historical IFN-treated cohort was investigated for comparison.

Background: The cervical spine is very complex, and it allows the largest range of motion relative to the rest of the spine. The fundamental function of the cervical spine is to maintain the head balanced over the trunk and to maintain horizontal gaze. The cervical spine must be both stable and flexible to guarantee function.

Bone- and soft-tissue sparing short stems are increasingly used in total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, there are a large variety of models of short stems, differing in design and function. Calcar-guided short stems provide an anatomical curvature in the medial calcar region, thus, positioning is done individually alongside the calcar in the "round-the-corner" technique.

Background: Short-stem total hip arthroplasty (THA) potentially offers advantages compared to conventional THA, including sparing bone and soft tissue and being a facilitated and less traumatic implantation. However, the indication is limited to patients with sufficient bone quality. Cemented short-stem THA might provide an alternative to conventional cemented THA.

Background: Laser haemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) with the 1470 nm diode laser in minimally invasive surgery for advanced haemorrhoid disease has been studied with respect to clinical variables, such as pain and complications, and intraoperative characteristics such as mucopexia, number of treated knots and energy consumed per patient. The study also included patient satisfaction, symptom relevance and cost effectiveness.
Patients And Methods: Between November 2010 and November 2016, 497 patients (age 55 ± 14 years) were submitted to laser haemorrhoidoplasty with a 1470 nm diode laser in the centre for minimally invasive proctology in Siegen District Hospital.

Introduction: Short-stem THA has become increasingly popular over the last decade. However, implantation technique differs from conventional THA and thus possibly involves a distinct learning curve. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the value of intraoperative radiography and the influence of the surgeon's experience on intraoperative adjustments in short-stem THA.

In a consensus process during four sessions in 2016, the working group "lower cervical spine" of the German Society for Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery (DGOU), formulated "Therapeutic Recommendations for the Lower Cervical Spine", taking into consideration the current literature. Therapeutic goals are a permanently stable, painless cervical spine and the protection against secondary neurologic damage while retaining the greatest possible amount of motion and spinal profile. Due to its ease of use and its proven good reliability, the AOSpine classification for subaxial cervical injuries should be used.

Introduction: Modern total hip arthroplasty is largely dependent on the successful preservation of hip geometry. Thus, a successful implementation of the preoperative planning is of great importance. The present study evaluates the accuracy of anatomic hip reconstruction predicted by 2D digital planning using a calcar-guided short stem of the newest generation.

Introduction: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is known to be a common complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA). The minimal invasive (MIS) modified anterolateral approach has become popular in combination with a short stem. We analysed the incidence of HO following short-stem THA using this approach in combination with a postoperative administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Introduction: The principle of implanting a calcar-guided short stem consists of an individual alignment alongside the medial calcar providing the ability of reconstructing varus and valgus anatomy in a great variety. However, still, there are broad concerns about the safety of extensive varus and valgus positioning in regard to stability, bony alterations, and periprosthetic fractures.

Background: Treatment of chronic hepatitis C genotype 3 (GT3) is more challenging compared with other genotypes. Since 2014, several new treatment regimens have been approved but sometimes based on limited data.
Aim: To validate the use, effectiveness and safety of anti-viral treatment in chronic hepatitis C genotype 3 infection under real-word conditions.
Official guideline "indications and methods of hysterectomy" to assign indications for the different methods published and coordinated by the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGGG), the Austrian Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (OEGGG) and the Swiss Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (SGGG). Besides vaginal and abdominal hysterectomy, three additional techniques have been implemented due to the introduction of laparoscopy. Organ-sparing alternatives were also integrated.

Infectious complications after allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCT) remain a clinical challenge. This is a guideline provided by the AGIHO (Infectious Diseases Working Group) of the DGHO (German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology). A core group of experts prepared a preliminary guideline, which was discussed, reviewed, and approved by the entire working group.
